I think I’m beginning to understand the concept of visiting someone for no other purpose than having a casual chat with them.
Perhaps it may seem strange to you that someone would struggle with this concept, and if that’s true, then I envy you just a bit. To me, talking for the sake of talking has always been strange, and I often find myself bored, frustrated, or otherwise stressed, any time I’m at someone’s house and we’re not actively doing something other than talking.
I understand casual chatter when passing someone in the hall at school, or when using the break room at the same time; or perhaps just when you work at the next desk over and your work doesn’t strictly involve language, so chatting is easy. That makes sense, because the conversation is facilitated by a sort of carrier activity.
But when I’ve gone to the trouble of driving to someone’s house, or if I’ve invited them over, and we’re not playing a game, or watching videos, or enjoying some new wine they just bought? It always strikes me as odd, which is further confounded by the way I find television distracting, but other people seem to need it to enjoy themselves. Perhaps they are experiencing the same phenomenon from a different angle.
I suspect it is largely in part to the secluded, very rural nature of my childhood home. IWe lived very far from most of our relatives, and since my parents were often too busy to drive me places, visiting friends was always at least a 20 minute bike ride away. If I was going to visit anyone, it was to try out a new video game, or to watch a movie, or for a birthday party. There was always an activity that allowed for conversation.
When my relatives visited, it was always accompanied by a card game like Rumme or Cannasta at the very least, if not a more involved and colorful system like Monopoly, Catan, and others like that. Maybe there were a few times my uncles would visit on their way through to a different destination, but they always chatted with my parents while I played a game or read a book.
Now that I’m an adult, and most of my relatives see me that way as well, I’m beginning to notice more and more an expectation that visiting someone for a chat is just a normal thing, and it’s taken me a while, but I think I’m starting to get it. We live so near to each other. I can’t think of a single person on my wife’s side who lives more than 20 minutes from where I am now; considering the fact that as a child my nearest relative by physical distance lived nearly an hour away - that’s very strange to me!
But I think I get it. We live such busy lives sometimes, we forget, or feel as though we don’t have the time and energy to visit each other. But we’re friends and family for a reason. We like to be near each other, even if it’s just to say “hey how have you been?”—which is actually not a small question if said with intention.
Someone recently told me that “The Christmas Holiday is not a vacation. It’s intended so that we can all have time off at the same time, to see each other.” And that surprised me a bit—a lot, actually—because I never realized that’s how I saw it: A vacation. As a child, Christmas holiday used to always be the time when I had no obligations, and I could play in the snow (if there was any) with my brothers or sleep in all the time and read a book, and yes of course I often got new toys and we attended some very special Church services.
Now as an adult, I think I can see that Christmas really is used as a day dedicated to family who aren’t usually there, and friends you’re too busy to see, but whom you care about a lot. And having a casual chat about nothing in particular, with nothing else going on - no tv, no movie, no card games - is a regular and completely normal part of all of that. It’s taken me a few years into adulthood to get it, but I think I do now, and I’m grateful to the person who pointed that out, so that I can appreciate much more now the closeness I have with my near and far friends and family.

Good evening, dear friends <3 and Merry Christmas!
i hope this message isn't too sudden. The staff and i have been talking about some changes to the site, and we wanted your weigh in.
To that end, we have two propositions we'd love for you to consider and share your thoughts on.
Proposition 1: Closing Townhall
The first matter is on the possible closure of /townhall/. To put it simply... the townhall experiment hasn't worked out as we'd have liked it to, and it may be time to close up shop.
When we started Townhall, we had a bold vision for what it might be: it was to be both a well-manicured garden for sensible debate and discussion of sensitive topics, but also a place where politics and heavier topics could go, allowing pony to be a bit more carefree.
Unfortunately, it has not worked out that way. We haven’t had the time and resources to proactively manage the garden. And though we’ve had many helpful reports, it has often been difficult to manage the reports within the expectations of Townhall’s userbase. Which is to say, in plain words, that we don’t know what’s best for Townhall, and as it stands, it does not seem like Townhall is good for anyone.
Unless then, there are serious protests, the staff feels quite strongly that it is time to close townhall. What are your thoughts?
Proposition 2: IP/Tripcode Login
Ponyville's open door and gentle hand policies mean that while we are a very inviting community, with a focus on loving and tolerating even those who would wish us ill, the nature of an open board without much protections means that we must rely on users to cooperate with not only the rules as written, but the spirit of the law, so to speak, to help keep Ponyville a kind, fun, gentle place to be.
Unfortunately, it does not always end up this way, and keeping on top of these problems requires a lot of vigilant moderation... which is very taxing, and to be frank, still requires the cooperation of those being moderated against -- the site's open door policies means that is very easy to, say, skirt a perma-ban if one so chooses.
An IP system, or other such a login, will enforce a degree of accountability, and create more serious consequences for actions. But, it may act as a barrier to entry for both new users and old users alike, which is why i would love your thoughts on it.
i will also openly admit too that with Prop 2 comes an expectation that all of our users will be more willing, perhaps, to abide by the site's rules. i don't anticipate heavy-handed enforcement, but the enforcement that is levied is likely to be more effective, and that is something to keep in mind.

I'm curious if anybody has had 'no reason' anxiety at some point over the past multiple weeks, in which one day you'll be rather ill feeling while the previous day (and the following day) things were fine. This being separate from general depression with specific causes, which would hit you for weeks at a time or whatever.

Gen 5 appears to be on its way out. Maybe this is a good time to talk about what made Gen 4 so hugely better than the other generations of MLP, with an eye toward helping to bring an equally great G6 into being. Here are two major factors:
1. Poetic but hard-nosed and consistent world-building for a world of horses from Faust and the other early showrunners. No sticky hooves. No electricity. No motors. Trains pulled by ponies. Mouthtools. Typewriters with only two keys. A richly fantastic world, but one that incorporates madness, disease, war, blood, bodily functions, birth, and death. The pure initial world picture tended to get messed up as the show wore on and things like go-carts and pianos crept in, but it started out clean and beautiful.
2. Archetypes. Two semi-divine beings, larger than other ponies: a goddess of sunlight and a goddess of darkness and dreams. Three races, corresponding to the three castes of Indian society and Indo-European myth: magical shamans, warriors, peasants. Archetypal characters representing the shy willowy female, the bold androgyne, the mad trickster god, the amorous, male-manipulating vamp, and so on. Extensive and explicit incorporation of mythologies from all over the world.

Time for some trope talk.
There's probably plenty of franchises out there that involve a hero going up against an evil pantheon.
There are definitely franchises out there where an "evil" entity such as Death is actually responsible for people and creatures dying since the dawn of time, or is responsible for the actions that take place to a soul after a person passes on.
So what actually happens when the hero slays the personification of Death (or War, or any other impactful entity)?
Does that mean nobody dies anymore?
That the souls are left to wander an eternity without guidance?
Does it simply mean that an avatar of Death, directly impacting the world is slain, but death itself keeps existing to perform its duties?
Or should we subscribe to the theory that the ancient entity is killed, but a new entity takes its place?
It probably differs depending on the source material, but what are some narrative examples where it really makes sense? And what are some examples that subscribe to "Don't care, evil is dead and that's good."?
