I've been feeling nostalgic, and I was hoping to dip in and chat for a day or two.
This is a typical icebreaker thread. I might not check in for a little while, because it's pretty late here, but I've got the day off tomorrow.
Post your top 5 books, and maybe a reason why they're in your top 5. And if you'd like, just stop in and say hi.
1. Okay wow this is actually a hard decision. I'm gonna put here: The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents. My all time favorite children's book. Dark, gritty, uplifting and intelligent. I cried, I yelled in disbelief, I felt sad when it was over. A group of newly sapient rats have to deal with the realities of a world in which they can suddenly plan ahead and foresse consequences. Where death used to mean very little, even losing a single member of the group becomes a cause for concern. Pratchett explores themes of anger, grief and the meaning of life from the beautiful lens of rat society. Which is very cute, but also so sad.
2. Happiness by Matthieu Ricard - A lovely look at what makes humans happy, with practical guides to try and increase happiness. No single book has contributed more to my wellbeing.
3. With each and Every Breath by Thanissaro Bhikkhu - A really interesting collection of buddhist meditation techniques and explanations for how they work. Both this book and Happiness are written from a relatively western perspective. I use these techniques all the time when stretching or meditating.
4. A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers. A fun and queer science fiction novel about an artificial ship intelligence that is transplanted against her will into a body and has to adjust to life on the surface of a planet, instead of life in a ship's computer. A heartrending tale that tackles themes of neurodivergence and queer love. I find it to be unbelievably poignant and accessible. It shocked me when what I thought was a frivolous and lighthearted book spoke to such a deep part of me.
5. I thought I had to include one book that wasn't frivolous, so I'm going to say The Sage Handbook of Counselling Psychology. Contributed to by my favorite professor at Uni, Mr. Colin Feltham. It's a handy guide that I use all the time. It's very well written, and gives a good overview of the various types of therapy that can be found in modern psychotherapy and pschology practices.
Bonus - what I'm reading right now.
Right now I'm reading Life and Death, the genderswapped version of the first twilight book by stephanie Meyers, and Unsouled, a progression fantasy book in the Cradle series (by Will Wight) (does anyone know what progression fantasy is? I just learned of this the other week).

I’ve recently received a much needed and well deserved kick in the teeth, and after some deep introspection, I’ve realized that I’ve been a huge piece of shit to many of you, in some cases for years, and especially since the shutdown of Old Ponychan. I know I can’t make things right with everyone but I want you to know that I’m deeply sorry for my actions. To put it mildly I did not take the shutdown of Old Ponychan well, and all of you have had to deal with it ever since. And of course I was being an asshole to some of you even before that. To this day I have always felt that if you're playing an RPG game and you want to have the most fun the best way to play the game is to be a selfish chaotic neutral type of character. You're not the kind of goody too shoes person who goes out of their way to help people but if you think there's a reward in doing so? Yeah, you can do it.
Chaotic neutral is easily the best alignment for roleplaying a character as you don't have be a total chaotic evil comedy chuckling madman evil for evil sake kind of person but you don't have to be a over the top good saintly hero for simply being goods sake either.
Chaotic neutral is clearly the best moral alignment for any video game play-through. You're not going out of your way to help people but if you think their might be a reward for doing so? Yeah, you're on it. But at the same time if you think their could be a better reward waiting if you backstack and betray the person you were helping? Well, you don't really like or want to harm people but if you don't get a winning hand sometimes there's nothing wrong with cheating to get the cards you want.. -

Spring is slowly arriving, there are now a bunch of sunny days on the horizon.
With nature getting more lively outside, I seem to find a list of spiders in and around the house again.
The ever present Pholcoid clambering around the wall, zygiella's nesting all around, a single wolf spider running around on the grass outside.
I just found a steatoda bipunctata (rabbit hutch spider) hiding away in an alcove in the ceiling.

I think it may not be fair to just throw potentially triggering images or videos on here. On the same time I have been getting less of a visceral fear reaction and have come to see spiders more with the same fascination of observing a mouse or an interesting looking weevil.

What is something media wise that just resonated with you? has touched you in a deep part of your being, or surprised you with how you reacted? something that has stuck with you since you watched it?
so i was done working on a project for the day, and i've been trying to really get myself to watch more things, to expand my repotoir and to remind myself why i want to do the things i do, etc.
and after thinking on it, i am reminded of ENA's DREAM BBQ, which i adore, and i've played through it many times, and watched the youtube series on them. it's surreal and bizzare in a way that just sings to my soul; i don't know if you are familiar with the series, but they are surrealist and wild for sure
so i then thought, maybe i should look up surrealism in what i watch next; it is one of m y favorite genres for a reason; so i decided to look up surrealist anime
and i got a whole list of them, FLCL is already my favorite show of all time; so while i could watch that again, i decided to try and find something different that ii'm not as familiar with
and after searching, i stumbled upon something called Cat Soup
it was a short 30 minute movie that's available on youtube, and it's reaaaaaally fuckin good; like the animation is on point, and the lack of dialogue and just wild visuals but also somber melancholy really hit me in the right spot
so the next recomendation was an hour and a half long video essay on the manga artist behind it, the comic series, and the short animated stint of the show. and it's really bizzare, kind of in a similar vein to pop team epic in a way
where there is comedy, but also just blindside you with harsh reality, but it just slides off with nobody caring, utterly unabashed in how irreverant it can be
i dunno if i'd be able to truly enjoy the entirety of the comic series, but i respect it
then i got to learn a bit about the artist, and her life, as well as her suicide back in 1998; which was sad, but it was 27 years ago, so it's hard to be devestated
but what really had me kinda contemplate, is a mixture of her genuine and authentic approach to her comics, in the face of conventional wisdom and norm, but also how she struggled so much to feel normal in the world around her, like she was sorta trapped in her own isolation. "nobody was mean or bad around me, but i still felt a wall around them" sort of thing
and it was just one of those things where i could exactly understand what she felt like, why she made the art she did, and felt a very vulnerable sense of kinship with her and her constantly staring cat personas
i am still kinda feeling a "buzz" about the feelings i sorta got from first the movie, and then learning about the author, and just am sitting with that, and just looking back on my life and how i was also that outcast sort of person, who could not relate to anyone, who still struggles to relate to anyone, and is so vehemently defiant in being authentic, often to my own detriment
i dunno, i just felt a sort of "seen" that i didn't expect today

i hope this message isn't too sudden. The staff and i have been talking about some changes to the site, and we wanted your weigh in.
To that end, we have two propositions we'd love for you to consider and share your thoughts on.
Proposition 1: Closing Townhall
The first matter is on the possible closure of /townhall/. To put it simply... the townhall experiment hasn't worked out as we'd have liked it to, and it may be time to close up shop.
When we started Townhall, we had a bold vision for what it might be: it was to be both a well-manicured garden for sensible debate and discussion of sensitive topics, but also a place where politics and heavier topics could go, allowing pony to be a bit more carefree.
Unfortunately, it has not worked out that way. We haven’t had the time and resources to proactively manage the garden. And though we’ve had many helpful reports, it has often been difficult to manage the reports within the expectations of Townhall’s userbase. Which is to say, in plain words, that we don’t know what’s best for Townhall, and as it stands, it does not seem like Townhall is good for anyone.
Unless then, there are serious protests, the staff feels quite strongly that it is time to close townhall. What are your thoughts?
Proposition 2: IP/Tripcode Login
Ponyville's open door and gentle hand policies mean that while we are a very inviting community, with a focus on loving and tolerating even those who would wish us ill, the nature of an open board without much protections means that we must rely on users to cooperate with not only the rules as written, but the spirit of the law, so to speak, to help keep Ponyville a kind, fun, gentle place to be.
Unfortunately, it does not always end up this way, and keeping on top of these problems requires a lot of vigilant moderation... which is very taxing, and to be frank, still requires the cooperation of those being moderated against -- the site's open door policies means that is very easy to, say, skirt a perma-ban if one so chooses.
An IP system, or other such a login, will enforce a degree of accountability, and create more serious consequences for actions. But, it may act as a barrier to entry for both new users and old users alike, which is why i would love your thoughts on it.
i will also openly admit too that with Prop 2 comes an expectation that all of our users will be more willing, perhaps, to abide by the site's rules. i don't anticipate heavy-handed enforcement, but the enforcement that is levied is likely to be more effective, and that is something to keep in mind.

Have you ever used a GLP-1 receptor agonist (e.g., Ozempic (semaglutide), Zepbound (tirzepatide))? I've gotten too fat (BMI: 25.8 kg/m^2, body fat percentage: 26% measured by electrical impedance) so I'm considering either getting a prescription for tirzepatide or buying gray-market retatrutide.
Retatrutide has the advantage of better preserving lean mass and metabolism, but I can obtain it only from gray-market 'research use only' sources, which introduces significant tail risks (including uncertain product quality, potential contaminants, and dosing inaccuracies), plus there isn't phase-3 safety data yet. Also the gray-market route is much cheaper, especially if my insurance doesn't cover GLP-1 drugs for me. -
