Salazzle still mogs her tragically.
Such is the fate of any tailless loser.

But yeah, 1.0 is shockingly solid. Really fun, Albeit the grind for metal is still so, so very real.

I am quite split on Palworld.

I haven't played, so take anything I say about the gameplay itself with a grain of salt, but there is little about it that really looks like what I want from a Monster Tamer, and while there are definitely some designs I really like (there's some Panda thing I thought looked cool recently), I do feel they skirt a little close to the "straight ripoff" line on a lot of these creatures.

At the same time, I am on the side of it being a good thing that it wasn't cracked down on too hard, because Lord knows that would kill the chances any other indie Monster Tamer game would ever have.

It's an odd duck for me, but eh. Glad to hear you guys are having fun at the very least.

>but there is little about it that really looks like what I want from a Monster Tamer,
What're you looking for in a game like that?
Something a little less 'sandbox' and more structured perhaps?

> I do feel they skirt a little close to the "straight ripoff" line on a lot of these creatures.
While it's a bit of the popular narrative, I have to say, the vast, vast majority aren't. Like, there's only about, maybe, 10-20ish I can say are "blatant ripoffs". And of those, only two are to the point of being actually distracting, as, most of those 'rip offs' are like Chillet or Loveander where they're pretty unique in their own right even if you can kind of see what they were trying to do.

It's one of those things a lot of folk like to parrot and push, but, I don't think they're actually aware the game has over 200 pals, the vast majority of which are fully unique designs in the first place.

> I am on the side of it being a good thing that it wasn't cracked down on too hard
It was, though. They just weren't stupid about it, and Nintendo had no real room to stand. Even when they tried to patent frankly absurd things like 'throwing an object to summon a creature' or 'gliding via monster', or any of their other claims that ultimately got tossed out (and, in the US at least, attempted to get patented AFTER Palworld came out...)

Keep in mind that a huge chunk of Palworld's revenue had to go to fighting off Nintendo because of all this.
Frankly, I find it a wonder we got 1.0 at all, let alone it's this solid.
Any other indie title, even if they got money like Palworld, would've caved, wrote off the game, and moved on.
These guys got my support for standing up to the BBEG that is modern Nintendo.

Well, certainly not the MMO Action RPG-style I am seeing from gameplay videos. But then I am a bit of an old school turn based RPG fan, so I'd prefer more focus on actual 'Mon collecting and battling. I feel like there are other games I can play if I wanna run around as a person with weapons fighting big monsters personally.

I think you misunderstand me. While I haven't sat down and carefully analyzed every Pal, I am perfectly aware that there are plenty more than the few popular examples people like to dig up. Hell, I JUST said there are definitely some I genuinely really like.

I remember the throwing object thing. That was ridiculous. Like I said - I am on Palworld's side on standing up to Nintendo trying to crack down on the genre and its conventions as a whole. That shit ain't cool, and I am glad it didn't get far.

So I'm not just sitting here going on some "Ugh fuck the ripoff game" spiel.

Just saying I am of two minds based on what (admittedly limited) knowledge I do have, and that the gameplay and visual style combo doesn't look super up my alley. I'm sure it's fun for those it appeals to, and I am glad it is for you.

In any case, it's unlikely I'll ever play it much.

She does have a tail. Two of them, actually. Double the tails, double the simping. Too be fair, we'll test if Lovander is waifu baby-mama or not once we see the new pals.

>>1209413
Some of the pals are pretty much rip offs to be honest. A lot of them, while some what similar are so different that they have their identity, and a lot feel completely unique. Either way, pals do have a different feel to them than pokemon in my opinion.

As for Nintendo getting their buttholes blown out by the Japanese government and video game fans, that was a long time coming.

When the game first released pre 1.0, I had my complaints about the game. It was good, but felt emptier and less polished. From the mechanics to the world, to interactions. 1.0 feels like an actual good-game. Been addicted to it.

I'm not familiar enough with the genre to really say, but, considering there aren't a pile of actions or skills you gotta think about, I don't think it's quite applicable.
I'd describe the player-side combat as 'dark souls' esque. The pal-side is pretty much entirely inactive from your own end, save for activating pals; Placing, as well, should you use a mod to restore the throwing ability.

>, I am perfectly aware that there are plenty more than the few popular examples people like to dig up.
Sure; My point was more that it is not really "a lot of" the designs. The vast majority are unique designs, and even those that're 'ripoffs' in a sense are usually different enough to be their own thing.

>Like I said - I am on Palworld's side on standing up to Nintendo trying to crack down on the genre and its conventions as a whole.
Sure, as am I. The point was more, though, that they WERE cracked down on hard by Nintendo.
Nintendo just overstepped massively trying to do it, and Palworld, unlike most games, let alone indie ones, had the integrity to actually fight them on it even at great costs to themselves.

Frankly, it's something that has needed to happen for ages, and I was expecting would only really occur when, though this may've been whistful thinking, some fans get together to challenge some of their more shady practices.
Though this is certainly an acceptable route.

Flat ribbons hardly count.
Chillet bodies the pink harlot.

> It was good, but felt emptier and less polished.
Similar stance;
I thought it was good enough to sell full price as a '1.0' game mind you.
Because I've played a ton of games that have less.
Buuuut, it was pretty obvious certain things were lacking, and rather than follow the style of most game studios these days, they decided to actually make the thing pretty 'full'.

Albeit I am having issues with the total lack of anywhere 'empty' now... But that's for the basebuilding side, and a result of me not really liking their usual flat dirt patches they expect you to use.

Palgliding, throwing balls, that sort of things.
Mods do it too, but I've noticed especially with the glider pals, it's far more 'stiff' than the original game had.
Which is a damn shame.

This'll sound strange, but, I kind of stopped playing after they got rid of those. Specifically the gliding. I don't know why, but I love my Celaray. I love gliding with them. It feels good, and makes me smile when I see them.

Oh, most definitely!
While you have the option to run inhumane operations, it's really not exactly 'practical' even if you're inclined.
Slaughtering is an option, but, like, you could just grow berries which is easier.
And overworked pals require more mincromanagement as you gotta swap them for others.

Better to make them your BFFs and give them luxurious beds that you can sleep next to them in, alongside cool spas, good food, and plenty of rest so you can spend all day adventuring without having to worry about them.

Oh and of course you also have your party pals.

1.0 dropped and it's genuinely massive. Hard to explain. Game is no longer feeling like your average EA cursed runes survival, you find all over on Steam. While they certainly could expand some things, it's basically feature complete, smooth running, and actually FEELS like a final product.

I need to emphasize this; I have NEVER seen a game, EVER on Steam, land a successful early access launch, and actually deliver a clean 1.0
Most the time they either keep the slow trickle updates, and just declare 1.0 years later without anything clean, leaving a still clunky game, or they just don't bother at all, basically abandon it, and give only lipservice updates at best.

Palworld is one of very, very few games I've seen actually deliver. And, hell, that's with company like No Man's Sky, that HAD to after the reputational disaster that was their launch.

Actually Larian is still an independent studio, it's just a big one. It's not tied to any other company and publishes its own games. I could maybe agree that BG3 is less indie because it was partially backed by Wizards of the Coast, but DOS2 was absolutely an indie title.

I guess it depends on what we mean by the terms, but, I'm meaning more it's a AA studio at least. Same ordeal as Kingdom Come, essentially, where it's independent, but obviously a well funded more 'establishment' as it were developer...

Gets into the weeds a mite. I wish we had a different term for it. Especially these days as it's not really that notable any more if someone's publishing by themselves, since publishers are really rather irrelevant in the age of digital platforms and ease of self advertising.

Was talking to a friend about this, but... I've always liked 'ice' as an element.
It's definitely a favorite, and why I tend to prefer ice dragons in many ways. Just wish the DnD variety of white chromatics were more interesting. But, dnd sometimes struggles with such things. They don't really do the elemental trope of personalities to character design, which I find a shame.

Both Wikipedia and the company page on Steam refer to it as an independent studio, so I assume the company itself also considers itself an independent studio. Personally, I see any game either not developed or published by a major studio or publisher as an independent game. If a game isn't backed by EA, Microsoft, Ubisoft, or some other major company, then I consider it an indie game. Doesn't matter how big the team is or how much money the developer has, if they make the game and put it out without outside help, it's 100% indie.

The point where it gets muddled for me is when a big company like Microsoft has a program for smaller developers.

True, but that's why I'm wishing we had better terms...
'Cause, like, that means big AAA tier heavy funding developments can be 'indie', and meanwhile games like Abiotic Factor or similar aren't, 'Cause they've got a publisher technically, and it just feels like the common use gets weird...

Typical video game/rpg elements

Fire - High damage, possible DoTs
Ice - lower damage with freezing/slowing effects
Acid - High damage, DoTs, armor damage
Lightning - Low to High damage. Shocking effects, AoEs (chain lightning)
Earth - Mid to high damage, movement speed debuffs, stuns

Yeah the idea is you want a fire type against a physical striker. You burn them and suddenly they hit like a wet noodle

True, though it seems rarer. Always thought it was weird. 'Frostbite' didn't much click to me like 'I am on fire' does for continual damage...

>>1209817
I feel like shock gets more stuns than ground, but I mostly agree.
Only thing I'll add is usually shock is also high damage, just that it'll be spread more, 'leastfrom a lot of the old games I played. Chain lightning is super common for some reason. I guess arcs are cool.

>Yeah the idea is you want a fire type against a physical striker
Oh, I thought that was going to be 50% more damage FROM physical...
Yeah that's gonna be a weird one for me.
Throwing a punch while you've got a burn is probably gonna hurt the burn a bit, but like, i can't really see why you wouldn't be able to still basically use your full force.
No wonder I never understood it.
