New episodes have just been announced at SAN Diego Comic Con. The series is returning to Gen 4 for a new adventure featuring Twilight, Pinkie, Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash. The episodes are only 9 minutes long and will appear on YouTube. 2027.

It has been pointed out to me that two stars have been removed from Twilights ass. There used to be five orbiting stars, now there are only three, likely referencing Applejack and Rarity not existing in this Generation.
I think these are new Twilight, Dashie, Shy and Ponks. They just share the names and designs. Like that Rainbow Dash who always dresses in style.

More details coming in from answers at various panels. Rarity and Applejack are confirmed for future appearances. Gen 6 is indeed a reboot and not a continuation. These are new ponies who share designs with Gen 4 but have no prior history together.
