ponyville is where princess celestia told granny smith's elders to settle, whereas braeburn's elders settled in ponychan
(or something like that ....)

As a Ponychan veteran who has been posting on since like 2011 I'll give you a quick info dump on Ponychan

Ponychan is dead. The current Ponychan is a copy made after the real one shut down years ago after the owner no longer wished to pay for any upkeep and had no time for moderation and was frankly annoyed and upset by the shit show the place had become

It had become a bit of a hole in it's last years. Endless fights between certain posters, the politics drama after the subject was allowed then banned and allowed.

One of the main mods also got doxxed which understandably upset them and lead to them leaving and moving here to Ponyville (Won't name them but if they're reading this they know who they are I see your Youtube channel is going really well)

The site also become a target for bots posting illegal content pictures and links which may or may not had something to do with a certain banned poster being mad about moderation. Nothing like going on a pony board and seeing links to illegal pornography..... And because the site only had one or two mods at most if this stuff got spammed at a time they were sleeping like 3 in the morning their time then it would be staying up for hours

Ponyville has always been much stricter and has no time for nonsense and has always strived to be friendly and welcoming . While Ponychan started out as a safe for work place in the mid to late 2010s it started embracing a much looser shitposting feel and style which for better or worse in the end did rather lead to it's downfall and closure although again a clone of it lives on

Sounds close enough

You're probably better equipped to speak on the current difference between ponychan.co and Ponyville.

> The site also become a target for bots posting illegal content pictures and links which may or may not had something to do with a certain banned poster being mad about moderation.
I feel like the topic is taboo, with thge whole giving attention to people. But I absolutely don't get the whole "let's spam communities with CSAM as a joke" mentality. Unless you're super down with CAM yourself.

When I try to get ponychan, it redirects me to ponyville.

Localhost sent me.

>>1207669  This means you're either using TOR or tried to access restricted files/locations.  If it was the latter, I can check the logs and find out exactly why, if you want to send me your IP address.  If it was the former, you're just out of luck, as TOR and all its CP-posting denizens are not welcome.

>TOR and all its CP-posting denizens
Next, you'll start claiming that all MLP audiences consist only of little girls.
>are not welcome
So you decided to sent them to a neighboring board? Quite friendly, what can I say.

TL;DR Ponyville's a splinter chan of Ponychan.
Ponychan's a ".co" site instead of ".com" because the guy who had it prior to .co's run was a bit of a vindictive dick, and so didn't want to pass it along despite that being the practice for absolute ages.

>>1207632
The site started as a splinter from 4chan, so it was never really absent that "shitposting feel".
In fact, many of the splinter chans to come from Ponychan came about primarily BECAUSE they decided to get strict and start cracking down on the shitposting that was so long a part of Ponychan's culture.

Also, frankly, given they gave up after Void popped up... I'm inclined to say that lot about fights and moderation is unlikely to be true.
Site massively lost population, pretty much all the "problem" people left, and even the boards were streamlined. Wouldn't take much to moderate at that stage. Bot-spam was honestly something that always came and went, too, across the whole of the internet, so it seems a strange one. I can certainly say .co got the same fare before, and, eventually it disappeared. That's usually how it goes.

So they get the torched passed, but didn't think anyone was worthy from the remaining people? That isn't very mature. Wasn't that place like over a decade old? I'd think that the spirit of the community would be bigger than a single person or their friends in some clique.

maybe should thank him for accidentally giving free advertisement for ponyville to people who are sensible enough to use privacy solutions

Yuuup. It's gone through multiple owners and admins, as well as a few splits and mergers, since the early days of the show.
Now, the address got bought up by some investor for a big chunk of money who just uses it to link to your typical garbage-bin spam sites.
Real tragic end to the thing.
Forgot it was a ".net" not a ".com", incidentally. Who knows why. Probably because ".com" sites are absurdly expensive most the time, I guess.

Boat put down a pretty crazy amount trying to get it. Honestly, for the best he lost the bid; Would've no doubt sucked to blow that kind of money on something like that. And I doubt original domain or no, you could quite ever catch the original magic.
Still; Sucks to see such a long internet legacy turn up to smoke.
Especially for guys like me, who... Honestly, I grew up there. Feels weird to say, but even as horrible as it had got sometimes, it was my 'home'.

I dunno.  They burned Ponychan so I came here.  I only like to be in one place.  I think Ponychan has more CP or something.

Dunno about that. I try to stay on top of it even at odd hours, and I know Boat checks it regularly.

Was a just a joke referencing a very old conversation I had with Boat a long time ago.  I too once wondered what the difference was.  Glad you got it under control.
