I just found out Season 4 is out. Why aren't you watching this alternate MLP universe about the magic of friendship, now (in Season 4) starring Alicorn Princess of Friendship Twilight Sparkle as Rozemyne?

Are the characters in any way similar?

Yes, I believe so. The similarity is quite interesting.

Both Twilight Sparkle and Myne are obsessed with study and books (and inventions, I think -- although Myne might like them a bit more), and they both always end up winning battles due to the magic of friendship (or often her new family (similar to friends in Myne's case)). Twilight has a horn which shoots a rainbow to win, while Myne has eyes that turn rainbow-colored to win.

Twilight has Spike as an assistant, while Myne has Ferdinand as an "assistant," although he is perhaps more like the Spike from G3 right after he woke up from sleeping. Both Twilight and Myne make friends and solve friendship problems wherever they go.

The mane difference is that whereas Twilight is in perfect health and lives in basically a utopia, Myne isn't always feeling well and must additionally navigate a complex, oppressive society (having previously only lived on Earth in early-mid 2010s) with a lot of arbitrary and unfair rules that she has to overcome. As the societal structure is based around magic and such, the world could be viewed as perhaps a very early (or early-alternate) version of Canterlot, as well -- perhaps even before the Elements of Harmony were discovered.

So, in a way, Twilight was sent from Canterlot to Ponyville to make friends, while Myne was sent from Earth to this world to spread friendship, -- similar to Season 5 but less explicit. ...

I also like how prominent the colors that Lauren Faust originally chose for Twilight Sparkle are throughout the anime ....

If Myne is Twilight, is there counterparts to her friends?

good question. i was thinking about this, but since it's been a few years since i saw the first three seasons, i couldn't match them up easily without watching it again (& season 4 takes a different tone ...more like slice-of-life & Twilight just doing/learning princess stuff (similar to the season 4 opener of mlp and other episodes showing twilight learning how to be a princess...) ..

....i believe it's moreso that her friends and associates display the qualities of the mane 6 at different times throughout rather than each pony equating as close to another character as Myne equates to Twilight ....diamond tiara makes an appearance though and (spoiler) *ahem* follows a similar character arc to diamond tiara from mlp

Ah, so no AoaB Fluttershy? Oh well.

Not to say the show wasn't based on MLP:FiM in any way, but I notice some have adapted to the "six girls" formula. Monster High, Winx Club and gen 2 of DC Super Hero Girls come to mind.

hm... perhaps not so much, although Myne is often moved or motivated by kindness ..

I believe it may be case of simultaneous invention (ascendance of a bookworm appeared in 2013), where two very similar stories develop independently simultaneously, similar to the invention of calculus, natural selection, the telephone, etc. ....

....interesting, well "6" as a number generally-speaking is typically representative of harmony and friendship, i think ....
