id like to think so
and if you told somebody 100 years ago we'd go to the moon, they probably would think you're crazy
so it may not be crazy to think that down the line we'd make it to another planet in the future. probably not within our life time, but still!

I think it's just a matter of time. And like... not killing the planet and each other before it's possible.

With the technology we have already developed, and the creativity of science fiction authors, I'm sure we will eventually. Right now rampant unchecked capitalist greed is keeping the product quality below the requisite levels, but I'm certain we'll eventually get there

I think perhaps it's possible that we might live on another planet but I think it would take far more massive leaps in technological advancement before something like that ever happens.
Like, if we were to live on other planets in our own solar system, like say, Mars, I think it would literally only be viable with something like terraforming technology, which is basically still just fantasy and possibly something like replicators that they use in Star Trek to deal with the massive resources needed for terraforming, which is also basically fantasy.
Either that or some form of FTL travel, which is also basically fantasy at this point.
In any case I think the sci-fi fantasy that thus could happen within something like a few centuries seems practically laughable to me, like maybe in a few millenia.

Realistically? Well within the next 20 years. The people that will realistically fund it outside of the goobernment? Rich people who want fancy vacation ideas.

If it doesn't happen in my lifetime, I'm probably gonna start crying.
I really, really want to meet a cute alien dergwife.
Or, any dergwife, really.
Also I wanna mine asteroids and flip off earthers.

>>1210097I guess. Unfortunately what will probably happen i don't think will be to great for the majority of people.
What would be great is a rational focus on tangible issues like infrastructure food stability and housing.
But it'll probably be the opposite and screaming and bombs and stuff and about metaphysical issues like culture and religion and stuff.
I picture mostly a fall off society. Nothing cataclysmic, just little things here and there. Rolling blackouts will become more common, a lot of people won't be able to afford personal transportation and there won't be an alternative, I think the standard of living in the West will be kind of like Brazilian favellas.
But i don't think itll be talked about much, like, there will be wealthy people that talk about it a lot and use it to score political points, and as an excuse for having "fundraising" galas and stuff, but they wont really actually do anything.
Kind of like the situation now with the homeless.
In the end, i think the gap will keep getting bigger, and yes, we will spend trillions on things like colonizing other planets etc, and some people will have very incredible lives, but most won't.

>>1210748Ah, you're right, I apologize.
I'm not really confident humanity's gonna make it too far. We're at a crossroads where a whole lot can go wrong if we don't gain control of the wheel. If we can delay it long enough that we get people even just on Mars, though, then I think we end up mitigating a lot of risk. We've gotten pretty good at keeping most of Earth connected, which unfortunately means it's easy for negative things to travel along those connections, be they viruses, nuclear missiles, or rogue AIs.
But so far, we can't even land on something like Mars with a great deal of success, and the first colonists won't have nearly the direct connection potential of Earthlings back on Earth. My hope is that space colonization becomes economically feasible, but interplanetary missiles do not.
