Good evening, dear friends <3 and Merry Christmas!
i hope this message isn't too sudden. The staff and i have been talking about some changes to the site, and we wanted your weigh in.
To that end, we have two propositions we'd love for you to consider and share your thoughts on.
Proposition 1: Closing Townhall
The first matter is on the possible closure of /townhall/. To put it simply... the townhall experiment hasn't worked out as we'd have liked it to, and it may be time to close up shop.
When we started Townhall, we had a bold vision for what it might be: it was to be both a well-manicured garden for sensible debate and discussion of sensitive topics, but also a place where politics and heavier topics could go, allowing pony to be a bit more carefree.
Unfortunately, it has not worked out that way. We haven’t had the time and resources to proactively manage the garden. And though we’ve had many helpful reports, it has often been difficult to manage the reports within the expectations of Townhall’s userbase. Which is to say, in plain words, that we don’t know what’s best for Townhall, and as it stands, it does not seem like Townhall is good for anyone.
Unless then, there are serious protests, the staff feels quite strongly that it is time to close townhall. What are your thoughts?
Proposition 2: IP/Tripcode Login
Ponyville's open door and gentle hand policies mean that while we are a very inviting community, with a focus on loving and tolerating even those who would wish us ill, the nature of an open board without much protections means that we must rely on users to cooperate with not only the rules as written, but the spirit of the law, so to speak, to help keep Ponyville a kind, fun, gentle place to be.
Unfortunately, it does not always end up this way, and keeping on top of these problems requires a lot of vigilant moderation... which is very taxing, and to be frank, still requires the cooperation of those being moderated against -- the site's open door policies means that is very easy to, say, skirt a perma-ban if one so chooses.
An IP system, or other such a login, will enforce a degree of accountability, and create more serious consequences for actions. But, it may act as a barrier to entry for both new users and old users alike, which is why i would love your thoughts on it.
i will also openly admit too that with Prop 2 comes an expectation that all of our users will be more willing, perhaps, to abide by the site's rules. i don't anticipate heavy-handed enforcement, but the enforcement that is levied is likely to be more effective, and that is something to keep in mind.

Can I get an explanation as to why /townhall/ is anonymous? What is the purpose? From my obeservation all it seems to be doing is to make the entire board feel basically like /pol/ which is an extreme detriment to the entire point of the board. Why should I bother arguing with "anons" in the first place? It seems completly pointless. In my experience "anons" are basically just trolls, so why should anyone, including myself, even care? -

I'm not a coder so I don't know how hard this would be to implement, but would it be possible to add an option to change the date format next to posts, kind of like we can change between the 12 and 24 hour clocks?
I'm British and I always have to do double-takes during the early days of each month, since we (along with most of Europe) use DD/MM/YY whereas the website uses MM/DD/YY. For example, today is the 7th of June in my time zone, but I keep misreading the date as the 6th of July and getting confused. -

A'ight, if Ponychans /site/ won't help me with this issue (though probably better off asking on /oat/ or any of their other boards), I'll ask here.
So, I know how to clear cookies on Firefox. I also know how to clear cookies automatically while putting the few sites I like as an acception. Ponyville.us and Ponychan for example are on that exception list and should keep my username, theme and prefered settings.
But it don't.
Whenever I close down the browser and open Ponychan and Ponyville in new Firefox window it resets and forgets on me. While I usually keep these windows open in the background I still have to switch off my computer, so logging in and finding these sites have forgotten me is a hassle as I have to set by theme and put in my username every time I want to comment.
Anyway fix for this? -

...My dear little ponies. It has been a long time since we last discussed, in earnest, the topic of politics on /pony/, and on Ponyville as a whole.
Last time we talked, the mandate of the users was that we were too lenient with politics as it created conflict which broke rules on the site.
This caused our enforcement policy to learn towards moving all politics to townhall, and being quite strict about politics on /pony/.
It seems though that many users are feeling unhappy with this policy.
As the times change, so too do opinions, and we should not hold today's policy if it's based on yesterday's opinions.
So, i think, let us discuss, and ultimately let us vote, on what direction we think the site should go in, with regards to how politics are handled.
Open discussion/total free speech? Even stricter? Censorship?
It should be, ultimately, your decision, as a community.
Please let us discuss, and decide. I will consider the leading positions, and make a poll for us to vote on, to decide our policy direction on this topic.

I don’t know. I’ve wrote this out a few times, and many other, often less mature alternatives, but each attempt ends up being more autistic than the last.
TL;DR I’ve became extremely depressed over the past few days because of not necessarily this, but what it means for me. This place and ponychan opened up a whole new chapter of my life, and took me from someone who was completely socially isolated, to someone with friendships from places like this that have lasted for just over a year, and a girlfriend that’s lasted just under half a year up until now. I feel like, having been banned from this site and essentially 90% of ponychan that I’m being re-isolated.
Although I’ve successfully managed to work my way into other communities since then, taking the lessons from this one and ponychan that I had to learn the hard way due to my previous isolation. I feel like if I’m banned and was to hypothetically also get banned from all of ponychan that I could move on and adjust, but that doesn’t demonise the importance of places like this to me.
Over my two month ban I read a few left wing books, and watched some podcasts and videos out of a sense of intellectual curiosity, but naturally I wasn’t convinced. I think my convictions have just became too strong for anything to be able to convince me to leave them behind at this point. Although while my beliefs haven’t and aren’t going to change my personality over the past year and 3 months since I started posting on ponychan has changed radically, and I feel that in the past two months I’ve learned that places like this are more important to me than winning arguments.
This isn’t an apology, I still feel that my ban was unjustified, and my beliefs aren’t changing, however I understand that regardless of how “true” or “right” my perspective may be, most people won’t accept it, and if I want to be accepted in these circles I have to learn to essentially shut my mouth. I’ll still seethe at your opinions through bared teeth, but I think I now have the sense to not open my mouth about them. -

So, we've got major problems at the moment with severe moderator bias. At the moment, there's a pretty blatant instance, by Zecora, over on /townhall/, but naturally this has been going on for quite a while.
Whenever a particular user breaks the rules, the staff ignore it. In this particular case, rule 1, 1b, 2, 2a, 2c were all violated. Yet, instead of actually addressing the blatant violations that started the issue, Zecora focused the response on me, when I had gone through quite a bit of effort of replying politely for a very long time.
Further, Zecora decided to accuse me of "sarcasm". Which is obviously not the case. That was a legitimate example, which I had clarified in the response where the particular user in question had immediately insulted me. I decided to respond in a reasonable manner to that provocation, yet apparently, I'm the one in trouble.

It has come to my attention that the same two posters who are always fighting and disrupting threads, and making big paranoid fiascos on /canterlot/ when any moderator actions are taken are still fighting and making big paranoid fiascos about it on canterlot. Even now, after a forced anon board has been added.
I think it's really time for the mods to consider taking a heavier hand with these two considering just how apparent it is that they are more willing to try and manipulate the mods via /canterlot/ in response to nearly every action they make. -

Hi I got a small problem.
I'm on my phone about 50% of the time I'm here. I use the Quick Reply box because obviously.
I dont know of its my phone or the browser or the site or what, but every time the Quick Reply box pops up, about a quarter of it is cut off from the screen on the right side. It makes it so I cant see the far right side of my posts. Even turning my phone sideways does nothing.
I also can't move the box. Putting my finger on it and trying to move it does nothing but highlight text.
If anyone knows whats causing this or how to fix it that would be great. -

When I voiced concerns about the new rules concerning /canterlot/ and the streamlining of the moderation process, I was told that attempts would be made by the modstaff to not let the mods !!Scootaloo and (the collection of identities who operate under the name of) !!Luna make decisions about or take disciplinary actions against me alone to avoid potential bias. I have off-site history with these individuals, and while I don't feel it's necessary to go into the details of that history here, I will if asked to. To keep it short, they have both said and/or done some pretty horrendous things to me in the past. I feel my fear of potential bias is warranted because of those past actions.
However, in >>>/pony/960354, >>>/pony/960370 it appears that !!Luna made a decision and acted alone in issuing a judgement and punishment for a perceived violation of the rules. I would like to formally request that another member of the mod staff overlook this issued punishment and also formally request the same be done to ALL future punishments coming from these individuals I mentioned above. Preferable BEFORE the punishment has already been issued and served. I think this is important to ensure there is no personal bias in these decisions.

As a side note: While I cannot change the punishment that was issued now, as it has already been served in full, I would like to contest the motivations for the decision that was made, since I was not offered the chance to appeal and this event might have an effect on any further escalation of punishments.

it has come to my attention that another poster here is plotting to start a harassment campaign against me. He has outlined this plan here >>>/pony/955004
The issue with Noonim and his harassing me have become too much to bear. He is constantly trying to pick arguments with me, and bad-mouthing me publicly. Even when he is not involved in the thread of discussion. I never engage Noonim first and have not in a good while. While he was using his filter to block me, things have gone smoothly on the site. But announcing he plans to start a harassment campaign against me is very upsetting, and the fact that he claims he has never received an official warning for his actions here >>>/pony/955007 is even more upsetting.
I feel like his harassment of me is in violation of the rules of this board and he has demonstrated a very clear bias against me. I do not wish to engage Noonim ever again. I do not wish for him to be present in my threads, or to butt into my other conversations to insult me and accuse me things. I want him to leave me alone, but he has time and time again shown his refusal to do so. Not only that, he has very clearly stated that he feels justified in harassing me because of some sort of twisted sense of "justice". This needs to stop. It is causing me very real stress. -

So the turn-around time on threads that are locked in /townhall/ is far too long. It is generally taking more than a week for the threads to be reviewed and either closed permanently or re-opened.
By then most of the people who were originally discussing the topic have moved on and the conversation dies. Not only that, this potentially makes it too easy for people to try and silence opinions and arguments they don't like. There's also the issue of trying the punish a person for an infringement that happened so long ago. It doesn't seem conducive to helping that person improve if they may not even remember what was said and why.
What can be done about this issue? Is there any way to speed up the process? -

This site is in desperate need of a filter system.
I know you guys have major aversions to it, but, it's seriously required.
When you have problems with specific users, and we can't seem to get you guys to do anything about them, the only option is to try to ignore them. But, that's impractical. It's hard to ignore posts as a general rule. When someone says something that you disagree with, it isn't easy to ignore them. When they say something mean or dickish or just treat you poorly, and reports do nothing, you respond in kind far too often.
This is leading to fights that don't need to be happening.
It's leading to stress for everyone involved, and it has no reason to be.
Truth be told, I'm not sure why you guys dislike the idea anyway. There's not really anything wrong with blocking people who treat you poorly out. If it's a fear for what happens to a community that does this, then, I'd point to what's already happening here, because you don't add that.
Again, fights that don't need to be happening, are. It'd be very simple to prevent that. -

Unfortunately, as of late, it seems that there's a lot of trouble going around, and, I've always thought this was the type of thing rule 1 existed to fix.
But, it seems rule 1 either doesn't mean what I thought it does, or simply isn't enforced as a rule.
If it's the first, what constitutes a rule 1 violation?
Would calling someone a jerk, saying they're cruel, or insinuating they're being manipulative for the purpose of hurting another be a violation of rule 1?
Would constant hostile accusatory remarks, such as "you're trying to get me in trouble", or "you just want to make me look dumb", not be a violation of rule 1?
If it's the latter, though, I think that needs to change. I'd say Rule 1 is a large part of why this place has been so pleasant. Making people be polite to one another helps to bring about common understanding and build friendships.
Constant shitflinging such as examples above only give scars and disdain towards other users. -

For about 6 months I was under what was called a "political ban", where I was banned from discussing "political" topics. This ban has since expired, and I am currently operating under the assumption that I am no longer under it's restrictions. However, I have not received any official statement from any of the modstaff on the matter, and I have heard that they are considering reinstating the ban. I am making this thread to officially state my position that I feel it should NOT be reinstated. This thread can also serve as a place to discuss the issue publicly for the sake of transparency.
There were many issues this created for me and I feel that the ban did little good and much harm. For one thing, I was not allowed to defend my viewpoints on certain topics or discuss things as any other poster was allowed. This was alienating and stressful for me on many levels. Not only that, it allowed other posters to harass me by saying I was refusing to defend my position because I could not defend my position, rather than because I was not allowed to. This happened to me on a few occasions and was very hurtful and often felt like baiting. The parameters of the ban and what is and isn't considered “political" were never clearly defined, making it difficult to adhere to from the start. I often got no response or contradictory statements when seeking for this to be more clearly defined. My second and probably most important point, is that despite all the stresses following it caused me, the political ban did not actually accomplish what it was created to achieve. My understanding is that it was created to lessen the heated arguments that were becoming a problem on the board. But preventing me from defending my position on political topics did not stop this from happening. People still reacted in the same ways and caused big arguments on other topics, such as video games and "SJWs". What is the point of extending a ban that did not achieve what it was created for? There are already rules in place to prevent harassment and derailing, the things this political ban attempted and failed to prevent, making it redundant. But beyond just the issues and stresses the ban caused me personally, banning specific people from discussing specific topic sets a bad precedent on the board. Almost anything can cause a heated debate. Someone's opinion on Star Wars characters could create a heated debate depending on how others react to it. Are we going to pick and choose what topics EVERY person on the board is allowed to discuss? That sounds like a bad path to go down. We run the risk of alienating people whose opinions go against the opinions of the site's majority, even on harmless or benign topics like Star Wars characters. Banning one poster from discussing a particular topic sets a bad precedent because it's either singling them out unfairly, or it is setting us up to be a place that harshly polices everyone's opinions.
In summary, the ban prevented me from conversing normally or defending my positions and makes me vulnerable to harassment. What was banned was ill-defined from the start and caused me stress trying to follow it. The ban did not accomplish what it was created for and everything it was designed to stop is already against the rules. And the ban sets a bad precedent on the board for policing people's opinions. For these reasons I feel it would be both unfair and unwise of the modstaff to reinstate this ban. I would like a public, official statement addressing this and stating whether or not the ban will be reinstated. -

I suggest repealing the mandatory minimums and the "three strikes" style ban system. Giving someone a weeks-long or even months-long ban for a small violation isn't really fair and doesn't make sense, even if the offending user had accumulated a few bans for other small offenses. Mods should be free to give small bans (e.g., a few hours or a day or two) for small violations and to give warnings for cases that could be interpreted as a violation but are ambiguous.

This morning I had a thought that I would like to share. I'm not suggesting any particular mod actions; this is more just food for thought.
I think a major source of nastiness on this site is treating discussion of a disagreement as some sort of a verbal battle instead of as a shared search for truth and knowledge. Political topics are especially prone to this, but it happens on other threads as well. I think threads would go a lot smoother if all participants took responsibility for becoming informed on the topic under discussion and trying to understand others' positions and questioning their own positions, with the ultimate goal of either (1) reaching agreement on the disputed matter after carefully considering evidence and reasoning or (2) coming to the conclusion that both positions have some merit due to factual uncertainties or differently weighing competing values.
I know this can be difficult in practice, but I think even just making a good-faith effort to strive toward this goal would help make things a lot smoother.
Please do not bring any prior drama into this thread. (If you want to use an example to illustrate a point, don't use something that happened on this site. Perhaps use a hypothetical instead.) -

This reminds me, i wondered why my image of Pinky in a diaper was quietly deleted in that thread the other night without comment when 1) you discussed Noomy's image a great deal before deleting it and 2) artee posts pinky in a diaper all the time and it's not a problem. Theres nothing sexual about the image i posted (in fact the opposite) and i see a much more fetishy pet-play Sonata than Noom's image posted all the time here and no one objects. I think you know the Sonata on a leash image and artee's diapered pinky images im talking about.
I don't see how joking Manley about his phrasing of this OP, or the images that got deleted the other night are any different than a lot of what goes on around here and i'm not making a big deal out of it, i just want to point this out as inconsistent moderation since you bring it up.
It was just good clean fun and i think you're reading too much into it.

When you're writing a post in the Quick Reply box, and you scroll up to the top of the page, the text from the Quick Reply box gets transferred to the Comment box at the top, but the image file doesn't. If you then click the Post button at the top of the page, the image file doesn't get uploaded. I think the image file should get transferred from the Quick Reply box alongside the text. -

Moony you promised Manley and myself a solid one-week ban if we squabbled again after the 12 hour ban.
In the Avengers movie thread he gaybashed me remorselessly for commenting that my gf and i both found a character to be hot in the middle of my post, told me to take the gay elsewhere n got into a long repetitive creepy obsession about how my gay makes him uncomfortable. He also claims he's fine with gay "because he has gay friends" but then admits he finds my gay uncomfortable because he's been hit on by a gay person once and because he feels that was an attempt to "convert him to gay". Which to me says that he's uncomfortable with me because, i guess he feels i want to have sex with him?! Its disgustingly offensive to me and while i took several multiple-hour long breaks each time i looked back in i found the discussion going on and on with my name being discussed constantly.
I lost my cool a bit and reacted, yes. I also had a really dark deconstructive mood that significantly negatively impacted me irl.
Zeke rightly called us both on squabbling like children. It's an experience that brought me back to the worst moments of my childhood, and manley stated that he did nothing wrong.
My favorite tidbit is that he's tried not to talk to me but i won't stop, when in fact my original reply was to ukp and not even to Manley at all. He contacted me first to tell me to take my "gay" elsewhere such as seeking naked pics of the character's actor (eew). Unless perhaps i'm not allowed to discuss the op with other posters just because he started the thread, but thats not the way it's supposed to work.
Theres a lot of talk about the manley problem and the difficulty in knowing what to do about it but this makes no sense to me. He's a chronic breaker of the basic rules and ignores all mod input that he's doing so. Hes being rewarded by getting away with this time after time after time so it's no wonder this problem won't go away.
Lack of proper response to his violation of the rules is not only allowing disruption to this site and the wellbeing of its members, it is directly hurting Manley in real life by conditioning bad behavior that could harm his rl relationships or even get him beat up or killed.
My behavior was not golden either.
Moony you promised us both a one-week ban for fighting, and that's exactly what we did and so i demand you execute the terms of our three-party written agreement and administer the one-week ban to both myself and to Manley, forthwith.
Moonses you are a public servant here and bound to the terms of your own proposed agreement that both I and manley executed by performance by continuing to post here. You have a duty to administer our ban. I trust you will not breach your duty and our contract. -

A stated reason for locking the thread is "Normalizing Nazi iconography isn't acceptable". But I see nowhere in the existing or newly proposed rules any indication that the 'normalization' of the iconography of certain political ideologies is verboten per se. Is all casual use of symbols exclusively associated with any violent extremist groups (such as Nazis, ISIS, and Antifa) forbidden? What about symbols of violent street gangs? It seems like this should be its own rule, if it is to be enforced as such by the mod team. -
