Happy birthday, you unlucky piece of shit.
Looks like I'm going to be stuck here a while. After that Rust Devil attack, this thing isn't going to be moving again without some pretty major repairs. And if I can't get it working again soon, I may be stuck here for the winter. GU-DR, Tobin, and myself are physically okay though. Tobin's a bit shaken up but if I can find him some food, he'll perk right up.
Silver lining, is that we've got shelter. Car gave out near an old pre-war gas station. I wish it was as simple as gassing up to get moving again, but at least we have a place to get out of the elements. Even has this old computer that I've taken to writing this log on. First thing's first though, this is going to be my home for the foreseeable future. As much as I'd like to just fix the car and go, a man and dog have to eat, and a robot needs spare parts. Some patchwork on our temporary home, and we can devote time to car repairs to get the hell out of here before the snow comes.

October 25th.
I've been familiarizing myself with the surrounding area. Mostly hills and neglected structures. There seems to be a decent wildlife population to hunt as well. I occasionally see some scrappy robots, but nothing with any sort of elegance. I usually just shoot them from a good distance away and scavenge their parts. I was able to rig up a basic Mr. Handy that I've set to work on a small garden. I was able to buy plants from a small shop a couple miles south of the gas station. I introduced myself to them earlier today.
A woman named Trudy lives there with her son, and they have a small trading post that they operate. I sold some of the unused scrap to them for the plants and a bit of medicine. I also found and cleared out a nasty mole-rat infestation below the station. There's a glowing fungus that's growing down there. It's mildly radioactive, but it can be purified to a safe degree to be used as antibiotics. When I can get some anti-radiation gear I may use the cave as a growing space for them.
I encountered some travelers before looping back around to the Rocket. Three of them, two of which were accosting the third for being something they called a "synth." This third person claims to have escaped from something called "The Institute." I'm going to ask Trudy about that the next time I swing by the diner.

Seeing Chrome's little series here got me thinking. There are many people who bash on Bethesda games, I'm certainly one of them, but I quietly always chalked it up to nostalgia. Now I think there is another explanation. Bethesda is plenty good at making fun and engaging games, but I think they are bad at theme. Here's what I'll mean, using the favorites of such stodgy folks, Fallout 1, Fallout 2, Morrowing, FO:NV, versus Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Skyrim. I haven't played Fallout 4, but from what I've seen the idea of theme will hold true. Spoilers below.
Fallout
The world is broken. Your vault is the only thing that wasn't broken in your little part of the world, but now even the water chip you need to maintain that is broken. As you venture out in the world, everybody is trying to either fix a broken world, or just get by in it. There are slavers and raiders, but most of the world is small villages barely surviving, full of people trying to keep doing that. The Brotherhood is like your vault too. They were able to hunker down, but now that the time for that is done they do not know their next move. Even The Master is this. He just wants to find a way for humanity to survive the coming eras. But The Master is not survival. He is another form of hunkering down, sacrificing anything and everything until something better comes. So you need to destroy him, to ensure that your species is not sacrificed to his whims. Famously, one way to do this is to prove to him that his way will not ensure survival.
The theme is Survival.
Fallout 2
Humanity has survived the nuclear blasts, they've survived the wastelands, and they've survived The Master. Now humanity has to survive each other. The species is no longer on the brink of extinction, and societies are beginning to form, each with their own views on what this new world will be. Your quaint regressive tribe, Junk Town, Shady Sands, and The Hub experiment with governance, New Reno develops their own ideas of laws and ethics, even the Deathclaws of Vault 13 have their own society going. The Enclave feels they have a right to impose their governance, even if it means stomping out all of the emerging cultures that have cropped up in their slumber. All throughout the game, you help to either solidify the roots of these cultures, or you prune the branches. At the end, you crush the existential threat to all these cultures you have cultivated. Each town has it's own karma rating, and you can be a saint for one people and satan for another.
The theme of Fallout 2 is emerging civilization.
Morrowind
Morrowind starts out with you being told that you are essentially part of a long con. But this requires you to get information, which most of your quests are. The people you interact with are either using you, lying to you, or don't like you. It comes to a point where you don't even know if you are actually the person in prophecy or if you're still running a con. But the people you can trust with this decision are gone, and you begin your own deception. Your own plans, operating behind those who are manipulating you to their own ends. By the end of the game, after emerging from Red Mountain, you can feel comfortable that you've stomped out the lies, but there are still holes, and you can't be confident of the truth. Factions embrace (as they belittle) you as a lackey, but it is almost impossible to ascend to the higher tiers of any faction without somebody getting violently angry at the help getting "uppity". The Temple actively hides the truth, while the Sixth House actively lies to you, the Great Houses only care if they can use it, and the Ashlanders and Dissidents don't know for certain what the truth is. At the end, it is cemented that Azura was using you all along. Even the three "good" Daedra, Boethiah, Azura, and Mephala, each represent lies and secrecy.
The theme of Morrowind is deception.
Oblivion
I suppose the divine right of Kings is the best I can get with this one? Feudalism but not quite?
I don't know. If you can think of one then I'd appreciate it. As far as I can tell the theme is effectively the plot: close the oblivion gates to stop all hell from breaking loose.
Fallout 3
I REALLY wanted to think of something here, and it is where I thought of this idea, but as far as I can tell the only theme to Fallout 3 is the setting itself. Fallout, but in Washington DC. Look at all the quirky Fallout Factions, go on Fallout-style quests. See Harold! Get a GECK!
Fallout New Vegas
We've graduated from the petty local disputes of emerging city states. Now New Vegas, barely grown into it's own city state, is under siege from two great empires. Caesar's Legion seems objectively evil, but Caesar has a plan. NCR seems objectively good, but it is painfully obvious that they've stagnated and fallen prey to corruption. Caesar is expanding because it is part of his grand master plan to recreate the country, complete without people like him. NCR is expanding because the short term boost to the economy will be good for polls. You, the player, get to choose, this strange fantasy so idyllic is is almost invisible behind the waves of brutality needed to get there, the safe and complacent path, or helping Mr. House carve out a (certainly autocratic) empire of his own, ensuring that New Vegas is not conquered by these foreign oppressors. Or New Vegas can stay a shithole and you can tear down the three surest bets our country has at recovering, but some prices aren't worth Empire. In the Mojave, most people see both groups as invading oppressors. Some have been swayed one way or the other, some have embraced one ideology or another, but most people are resigned. NCR, Caesar, House. The conflict has grown several orders of magnitude beyond what a simple survivalist still barely scraping by an existence can afford to worry about. The only ones with a clear idea about one or the other are either former members loyal to their people, or they are people with an idea about what is and isn't worth it.
The them is nation and idea.
Skyrim
Kill dragons, save the world. Save the world in some other ways too along the way. Even when you're a murder thief who swore his soul to devil aligories, you still find time to save the world.
You're the hero. That's the theme.
Now, a very important point here is that Bethesda games are
fun. I'm not going to start saying "ludo-narrative dissonance" because I have decided just yesterday that it is a stupid concept, but I do think Bethesda makes a type of game that attracts people who want to enjoy a theme to their adventure and fun gameplay and a plethora of activities do not make up for that hole. So, I think there are very specific people who get an experience where they pour hundreds of hours in and then feel empty or even hostile.

Notably I only went back and played Fallout 3 once, using a mod that ports the location and quests into New Vegas as basically a mega expansion into New Vegas... and I still hated it. I won't ever play Fallout 3 again.

Thursday was my graduation. Really my only one. I was running setup at my high school, didn't go to my bachelor's. And sis hit it on the head for me yesterday when she was going through albums looking for funny birthday pictures of me. There aren't any, funny or otherwise.
This was nice though, it's probably the last time I'll be the one getting celebrated like that, and for the only time I can think of everyone came. It felt really special.
Then before I could see anyone they all left early. Very early. In the middle of the ceremony. Like I should have known they always do.
Getting upset over something so petty was rediculous. Of course they had good reasons that I knew at the time, and it ended up going poorly for me that I reacted so poorly, but... that's how I felt.

Your idea is really solid, but I've been mulling over mod ideas so humor me.
So these will probably have to draw from the pool of potential rivals so you don't screw up something I haven't considered.
First idea. Victory in a war together breaks the alliance and procs a truce. Justification being that as far as the participants are concerned the alliance has done it's job and is ending on good terms. Not totally unlike what you had. Possibly open to abuse, but it would be pretty obvious that somebody was going out of their way to violate the spirit of the concept so gentleman's agreements should be viable.
Second idea, and the more convoluted one. Alliances cost some resource over time to maintain, with the justification that an alliance is not an informal vassalage. It would take either testing or somebody who knows more about it (like you) to determine which system and resource is best. Here, sleepy before bed but listening to your video, my mind says a potential mod would be adding a very very small corruption tick for each month allied at peace with a potential rival, and then every year the size of this tick increases. One thing I'd hope for with this, although it won't happen, is that guarantees and warnings would have a purpose besides wasting a diplo slot on a weaker one-sided alliance.

Being in healthcare now, the whole "thin blue line" thing seems just slightly disingenuous. An altercation with an officer is almost guaranteed to be physical and antagonistic. The nature of the interaction is a very specific one. Resisting is a serious crime, along with assaulting an officer. Even if in the end there are no other charges. But our floor staff? People whose interactions are supposed to be purely supportive? Well, if something happens then "they understood the risk." My colleagues get their protections specifically stripped away because they are involved in *potentially* emotional situations.
With how people like in your video bare protected and precincts cover up corruption and misbehavior (from personal conversations with very frustrated cops), I must come to one conclusion. Increasingly, the thin blue line seems to serve primary to protect the thin blue line.

I got through a campaign at basically max hope and minimum discontent, but there were some sacrifices at the end that I was not pleased with. I believe I can avoid those by forcing people to work overtime shifts. They don't like that, but it sucks to be them.
