Let's assume for the sake of argument that a "national divorce" is happening in the U.S. such that narrow racial and religious separation becomes a matter of ironclad law. You have to pick and choose which areas belong to Christians versus Jews, white people versus black people, Asian people versus Hispanic people, and so on.

How would you draw the map? What group gets what lands? And what motivates your lines?

is this is for the sake of argument, then it is an argument i wouldn't wish to engage in!

the answer is, i would leave the country, like the lorax.

Odd way of asking to burn Atlanta again.

Give all the land back to the natives of course.

Is this a trick question? Argumentum ad absurdum? The diversity in the population of America isn't so geographically isolated that one could easily designate a territory for any group much less enforce it without significant violence

Why on earth would we divide the country on racial lines like that?

I don't want Californians anywhere near me. It doesn't matter to me what race they are.
Why don't we split it off of ideology and culture, instead of race-baiting garbage?

Me when I don't know what "race" means

...That's literally the point?

I have no problem living next to some native american guy.

I have problems living next to a Californian.

I think you're the one too dense to know what race means.

People like to pretend race and biological differences do not exist

It's a bizarre question in a lot of ways.  For starters I don't know that you can separate things both racially and religiously at the same time, unless there's like subgroups to apply that to?  Like you've got the white Christian area and the black Christian area?  Stuff like Buddhism would just be an absolute mess with almost no racial affinity even left over.

Second of all race can be kind of nebulous.  Like as much as you can try to trace genetics and lump traits together, inevitably someone's gonna stick out.  Either because what we've been calling race is just off, or because there's families that definitely do not share a race with each other that now have to awkwardly choose a new location or be separated.

Third, no part of the US is affiliated with almost any of these groups?  Like you could try to say give things back to the natives, but they're also very "diluted" as a race at this point and that would kick a majority of the country out of the country.

And of course this is all ignoring the fact that there's absolutely no reason that you would ever want to do this, much less accomplish this.  But even "for the sake of argument" I don't think there's a real answer.

Just go along the Mississippi. Rivers make good natural dividers and it's the only one that reasonably simplifies the job enough.

If we set aside for the sake of logical discussion whether or not a national divorce should happen, then I think practically this would work as to how it could happen.

This is how I would draw the map, for no particular reason other than this is the way it seems to me that it ought to look.

Whoops. I almost forgot about the Native Americans. That's better.

The color choices are interesting, although I don't understand them.

..you don't understand what? - the reason for the color choices, the names, or the fonts?

>reasons for the font choices and color choices
I'm not condemning you or anything. I just don't get it.

for fonts, i think i mostly just started with the first letter of the group i was representing, and there was usually a good font starting with that letter that appeared to represent that group.... which was interesting. colors i just picked whatever came to mind.... for locations, just whatever came to mind first, mostly.. fairtly arbitrary but perhaps with a grain of truth

I just close my eyes and scribble all over for borders. Then I colour-code every piece of land in the most confusing way possible (white people are black, black people are green, Muslims are white, something like that) and painstakingly assign the land so that, at the bare minimum, 90% of any one group's land is composed of random exclaves that don't border each other all over the place.

I leave a note to cede the Virgin Islands to the Punic people and the mighty nation of Carthage. I deliberately don't say anything about Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Alaska or anything other than the mainland and the Virgin Islands.

Worst case scenario they get someone else to draw the map and I'm not responsible for any fuck-ups that ensue. Best case scenario they try to implement my deliberately stupid ideas and the whole idea collapses like a house of cards.
