Sometimes I get a little jolt where I want to pick up some classes on coding / programming. Then it goes away after a while and I never really do anything with it.

Anyway, it is now 2025. We're no longer college geeks and are now fully encased in real world activities, settling on our work or own hobbies. Who here still codes / programs this year?

What are the currently favourite languages you use in 2025?
What personal projects have you ever been involved with?
Are you still adamantly coding by hand and your own brain? Or have you submitted to prompt AI to give you the code pieces to set up your project?

I haven't coded anything in over 12 years at this point. So I guess that means C is still my favorite language.

Never used Ai to help me code anything.

The closest i get to having programmed any damn thing is writing scripts in RPGMaker.

Vibe decoding feels worse than just writing it myself so I just use it as another set of eyes. Its also a nice way to get some early momentum

I like AI fwiw, I like bouncing ideas off of it and asking it what I should make for dinner

I choose Rust for most things and occasionally dart/flutter for front end stuff.

Eh, tend to ask AI for some basic patterns. Or rather Gemini just appears in Google searches these days so you might as well give it's answers a go. It's often trash. But sometimes it works.

>What are the currently favourite languages you use in 2025?
I have a deep love for python, and making short scripts with it. Would never dare to use it in an actual project, but for sketching things quickly or doing a quick data analysis thing, it's perfection~

>What personal projects have you ever been involved with?
Too many to count. Recent project was making my own keyboard layout optimizer to try to find a better keyboard layout than qwerty.

>Are you still adamantly coding by hand and your own brain? Or have you submitted to prompt AI to give you the code pieces to set up your project?
Nothing beats doing it by hand.

I use AI whenever there's a syntax or environment specific thing that I don't remember and just need a refresher. But besides that, I basically never use it, and I NEVER use any code that it produces because that stuff is always crazy buggy or really weirdly written. It's just garbage code.

I write mostly Python and C++.  Python is a really nice language IMHO, although it can be slow to run sometimes.  C++ is, well, C++.  At least it isn't Java.  But getting pages of compiler error messages is annoying.

I've found that Claude writes very nice code, although sometimes it takes a few tries.

>I NEVER use any code that it produces because that stuff is always crazy buggy or really weirdly written.
Which LLMs have you tried?  I've found that for small, well-defined tasks, Claude often works quite well.

Hmmm, RPG Maker. I remember downloading it free somewhere in 2003 and it blew my mind at the time.
I never finished anything and never really got far in the programming department.
I did put up like an entire bestiary of monsters.

>>1199629
I never tried Rust yet.

I do find a lot of satisfaction navigating C# and Java and stuff.

>>1199670
Python course so far had me less interested than my Javascript course, buit it does seem to be preferred by many.

I have to wonder by now if strongly typed languages are better than the interpreted stuff.

I'm both a college geek and working on my own hobby projects.

My biggest project to date, Gochan, is written in Go. My second biggest, QtSphere IDE is written in Python, and my third is either GD6502 IDE (GDScript) or Half Life 2: Interactive Fiction Edition (Inform 6).

I still code 90% by hand, using Copilot mostly just as a glorified autocorrect. I generally only use it to write my stuff if I'm dealing with a persistent bug, or working with a language or API that I am unfamiliar with.
And even then, I only have it write small snippets.

You're probably like way out of college now, though...

I know people have done crazy stuff in RPG maker. Not me.

It's a stupid excuse, but if it comes to programming, I think it's really fun and interesting, but I never really have any sort of project that I would invest time in.

i used to study a (very) little bit of visual basic 6, rpg maker, pov-ray, vb.net, html, css, and c++ but would get overexcited/confused/lonely/bored very quickly and stop working on things. also studied (very) intro matlab, intro c, intro soft. eng. in first time i went to college -- so basically everything i learned ai can now do, probably

>What personal projects have you ever been involved with?
a few, like an rpg maker game i managed to force myself to finish in high school

indeed. far more skill/creativity than i had

sometimes think about if i should study visual basic 6 in depth

Oh, I taught introduction classes on Matlab, did some tinkering in Mathematica once upon a time. The latter may not be too much programming, though.

And I had some weird gravitation towards Visual Basic.

Egh, my currnt work may provide me some challenges to step out and code a little bit. But as a non-developer, for security, there is no Visual Studio access, no JDK, no Python or whatnot compiler, no access to node...
I can do a bit of macros in office files, tho.

>Oh, I taught introduction classes on Matlab
interesting

>And I had some weird gravitation towards Visual Basic.
visual basic 6 was always an underappreciated programming language - the switch to the .net framework making it much less fun to play with -- was asking chatgpt about it, and it turns out ponies like it so much that they even made a program called "twinbasic" to keep it going (although it's confusing what the program actually is and if it's free or not)

>Egh, my currnt work may provide me some challenges to step out and code a little bit
it could be fun if can find the right program to code with

dunno ...vb6 just seems more friendly. my first programming book included the working model of vb6 (can't make exe files) and later bought vb.net but was harder to do the same things and seemed to reduce freedom to structure the program how you wanted (or, steeper learning curve, less of an adventure learning it), i guess

...guess i value languages that are fun to learn, maybe

I think one of my biggest faults is that I am quite illiterate to all that goes on under the hood.

Like,I do always need a real step by step guide on how to set up a proper environment to run some code and I still need to understand how to create a program that runs a 100 tasks efficiently by clicking a simple exe file.

As a side result, it's tricky for me to identify which languages are amazing and which languages are really bad.
Sometimes it feels like unless you work on huge projects, most popular languages are almost the same.
Especially now that most languages over time have evolved to overcome their original issues, such as being platform dependent.

It's a language with a lot of common sense built in. I recommend it. Dart is nice too, but support is geared heavily to flutter. As someone who wants one language to do everything, rust is so far the closest.

I'm sorry but Java is eww. Just my opinion.

>>1199977
Some of the problem is people keep making new languages instead of improving existing ones. So yeah I agree it's all unnecessarily confusing.

Python is pretty simple and straightforward, though it's a scripting language and isn't (normally) compiled to executables, though it can be done.

ive heard about python but don't like the name/that it is manestream/that it is a scripting language; on the other hoof, while i like the idea of c/c++ it seems quite hard - especially with debugging

rust certainly sounds interesting but not sure how useful it would be for making games & no visual editor like vb

There's an simple IDE you can use in a browser here: https://8bitworkshop.com/v3.12.0/?platform=zmachine
It's what I used initially, though I've since installed Inform 6 and use it from the desktop now.
There's also a newer version of the compiler called Inform 7, though the language is very different from 6, using natural language programming.

Actually, that's more accurate, yeah.  You certainly could ask for text input every time for something more classic, but that isn't the default.

I've been programming CNC machines via Fusion 360 professionally, and I've got a few personal projects, most using C. One is a very overengineered workbench as of right now.
