Well, this year I have discovered the /topcharactertropes/ sub on le Reddit which is always a fun thing to go through when I'm bored.

Anyways, when consuming media

What tropes turn you off from a piece of media?
What tropes turn you on get you hooked on a piece of media?

I can't remember tvtrope names for tropes but tge one I always hated the most was o0s blockbusters passing of annpyong cartoon slapstick as hip ironic snark. Like those god damn Mummy movies from the late 90s.

"Bad" tropes don't really exist. Like anything else, they are simply tools and tendencies that exist because they tend to work. It's who handles the tool and how well they do it that counts.

That said, some tropes that annoy me greatly is, for example, "The Supernatural Proof Father".

Name a Haunted House movie, or really any movie wherein a family is being menaced by something or other, and 9 times out of 10, it will be the dad who just refuses to believe anything is going on, way past the point of credibility.

In these movies, there could be a full horned, red-skinned demon dancing in front of the guy, making everything in the room fly, summoning fire and yanking his dick and the dad would STILL just go "Nah, nothing here, just an old house making noises!" until the moment he suddenly dies.

I hate it. It's rooted so deeply in "Men must always be stoic and women are always more "in tune" and "spritiually open" than men" and it's dumb.

The "What if all animals were domesticated?" and "What if all animals acted like dogs?" related tropes are fascinating, and I've a love/hate relationship with how they're both so obviously false factually yet so curious to see.

Related: guy treats a hyena like a puppy.

There's definitely tropes that can annoy me greatly.

Reminds me of how ion fantasy, mostly women are assigne to faith healer classes.
(which probably makes it interesting if a game can pull out a male white mage every once in a while)

I'm reminded of the large cats sitting in boxes video.

I used to watch the Mummy movies a long time ago. I mostly associate those with the sort of quippy adventurer films.

I can't really place this trope, though.

Quippy adventure films can be funny if the comedy isn't insultingly stupid.

like Esh said >>1196355

there are no good or bad tropes, they are merely tools and observations made by others

with that being said, one trope i don't care for is when somebody is getting publically embarrassed as a comedic bit; it literally makes me cringe in empathy, and more times than not i have to leave the room or turn the scene off. i hate how it feels and i just feel awful for them. it has it's time and place, but unless done well, i don't care for it

as for tropes i do love? one trope i actually really enjoy is your classic "freaky friday" body swap scenario, where two or more characters are swapped, and have to impersonate eachother in order to get through their ordeal unnoticed. bonus points if they keep the voice actors to the bodies, but they are able to act as somebody else acting as them

it's fun! it's funny! and can be a really great insight to how others view that character, and can also be a great tool for empathy if they learn about those other characters struggles and triumphs

can it be done bad? absolutely it can! but i find that it's mostly been a good time!

The trope that literally everybody literally all of the time drinks alcohol, or otherwise that getting utterly wasted is a normal thing to do like every few days. That trope. Now that I hate.

Image somewhat related. I still laugh at this.

Pinball scoring is a longtime favorite. I'll happily have my numbers go up to 30 digits for no reason.

Shoehorning in gay or trans characters these days. Netflix style changing of race or gender. It is actually really dumb.
