>>1194947>But 2 and CE were genuinely great. CE, especially, was downright revolutionary.I think that is my issue with it? Like it
was revolutionary, and I was a part of the old guard watching our kingdom get torn down, something unidentifiable being built in its place. It shifted game design dramatically, and in a way that perhaps made it more accessible, or perhaps even more enjoyable for some. And yet all I really wanted was Doom.
These days there's a lot of people like me going "Man, I wish we had more Doom." So people made more Doom! Even Resident Evil got to finally return to its old styles (mostly) with 7, 8, and the remakes, so it's not all indie stuff that misses the 90s.
Also these days, there's some new multiplayer shooter genres that are cropping up and taking over, like hero shooters and battle royales, and I think a lot of people are missing stuff like Halo or TF2. And, like you said, Halo hasn't quite stuck to Halo, either, being dragged through modern day levels of the corporate mill. 'cause I did enjoy CE at the time, at least somewhat. Wasn't as blown away as the mainstream was, which is what the industry decided to focus on, but I don't have any particular complaints about CE itself.
Point being that it's kinda the old Simpsons bit about how he used to be with it, and then it changed, and it'll happen to you. Except a bit more real and depressing, but also hopeful because the stuff we love isn't necessarily gone, and maybe we can pursue that without worrying about the waves.
