It is now officially summer, the worst season of the year.

May we all melt together.

I got outside window shutters installed last week. So I actually think this might be the most comfortable summer for me in many years.

Saw a comment regarding people mocking the British for not being able to handle any sort of heat.

The big rebutal is that the heat itself iosn't so bad compared to other places in the world, but the houses up in NW-Europe aren't really built to handle the heat.

No standard airco, instead just central heating. Houses built to absorb and contain heat rather than going for cooling down.

I too am pretty apprehensive towards "heat" waves.
I have a big window in the southern part of the house, nearly fully exposed, no space for proper curtains and no way really to get proper cooling.

I got some mobile A/C unit, but it kind of requires me to rebuild the house for the outlet but am not allowed to modify my living spaces. So I should just chav it.

Yeah. It's complicated. My understanding is that England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales as well as France across the waters (going south) have historically had far different laws and general regulations having to do with housing not just in general but specifically to do with any sense of "resistance to weather" per se.

It's not like some random Englishman or Frenchman from 1825 to 1925 to 2025 weren't able to deal with intense cold or intense heat compared to some random other dude. There just has been this thing with how governments and industries treated the whole very idea of 'housing stock'. And what some business even had to do in physically setting up something that counted as 'housing'.

You've watched the Star Wars Prequels, right? You remember those dudes who literally lived in glowing bubbles? Underwater? I think about that sometimes during hardcore cold and hardcore heat, alike, myself. I confess.

I don't know about the legal stuff.

It just made a lot more sense to build houses to withstand the cold up in Europe.

Now it's global arming that's messing with the standards.

It's a mixture of different things. It's not really the heat we struggle with it's mostly the extreme humidity we tend to get. Nothing too bad with just pure dry heat, but humid swamp heat? Where you can't sleep in your bed without it turning a swimming pool made of sweat in minutes? Yeah, it's awful

And yes not do we not have AC but our houses are built to keep heat in. That's just how they are designed so when it does get very hot our houses become ovens and it feels like the house itself is cooking you. Our streets and general systems and not really designed for heat either. Not too uncommon after heatwaves for our roads to have melted and peoples appliances have broken. Oh and we often tend to end up with droughts and water shortages.

And yes the biggest one of course is we are just not used to it. When most of the year the temperature bounces between 1 and 10 c it suddenly becoming 30+ for a month straight during summer is quite a switch up.

Guys, this is bullshit, like if we just go to pure emotions for a moment

I should live in a bubble house

You should live in a bubble house

Why not, really
