So with William Afton/Springtrap having been added to Dead by daylight does this mean he counts as an iconic horror villan? Given he's been added as a cameo character to the series as other iconic villans have such as Freddy Kruger, Ghostface, Michael Myers etc
Now don't get me wrong the FNAF is a giant stinking mess when it comes to lore and it's story/plot threads and really should have ended after the third game but you can't deny that Springtrap is peak villan design and inspiration. I mean sure he's just your classic zombie with memories brought back for revenge trope but there is something rather iconic about him

He's about the level of the Babadook. New, recognizable, welcome, but not legendary like Myers and Kruger.

The lore part is practically irrelevant. It's not as if Michael, Freddy, Jason or any of the others odn't have their convoluted nonsense and their "should have stopped there" moments - which is the easiest possible thing you could ever say looking back on things after the fact and completely ignores the "People are enjoying themselves" part of the entire equation, by the way.
I have never engaged much with FNaF, but I have immesne respect for all that it has accomplished. And given that I have seen folks of different age groups still be engaging with it for over a decade, with new fans still popping up all the time, the status well deserved.
On the level of Leatherface, Freddy, et al? Probably not. But all of those have also existed for like four times as long, and these kind of ensemble games / media is a relatively new thing. So it's not really fair to take a game like this, see a new character and go "UGH, does he REALLY deserve to be here!?" when every other character would absolutely have popped up in similar works five to ten years into their existance if they could have.
So yeah. I'd say he's iconic. Maybe not to the old guard. Not yet. But he wasn't added for no reason at all and has earned a place in the conversation, at the very least.

I think that we should look at this from 'the other end of the telescope', so to speak, and state that Matthew Lillard is a truly f--king fantastic actor who's beloved in both the United Kingdom and the United States for very, very good reasons.
It's worth noting that the latest 'Scream' movie is going to feature him in a significant role, and it's aimed to be released in 2026. Let's see if we all make it to that year. He's also going to be in the revised and expanded version of Stephen King's 'Carrie', too, even.
There's a story at:
https://www.newsweek.com/entertainment/streaming/stephen-king-carrie-remake-officially-reveals-main-cast-2080067Truly, he is a "Male Scream Queen" / "Scream Prince" / "Scream King", right?

>>1192462>>1192471Good points. In some ways horror franchises and their villans and characters overstaying their welcome and putting out some stinkers is rather iconic in the horror scene I mean they've all done it as has been said
>>1192495I think that Lillard being cast as William Afton/Springtrap is honestly great meta casting.
So you're telling me that Matthew Lillard who previously played Stu Macher one of the Ghostface killers a person who dressed in a costume to kill, has also played and to this day still voices Shaggy from Scooby Doo a guy who helps unmask costumed villains and monsters plays a man who is a monster in a costume?
As William himself says "symmetry my frend"

>>1192501I'm not even talking about quality of individual works.
Aside from the discussion of subjective VS Objective "quality" of installments (there are absolutely people who will hail soem of my "worst" F13th film as their favorites and vice versa), these characters tend to transcend that and become part of public consciousness.
The same way just about everyone knows who Jason is if they see someone in a hockey mask holding or weapon, or can recognize any wise-cracking hat-wearing claw-handed guy as "Freddy", the FNaF animatronics have gone beyond "just" being a thing for the fans. "Scary Animatronic" is a whole-ass thing now, and even people who have never played a single FNaF game will see one and go "Oh, like in that one game with the scary CHuck E Cheese's place, right?"
It's not on the same scale, true. But the base is the same.
The characters shine. People come for them, not for whatever standards of quality anyone may impose on the works they appear in. So the wole "many bad movies" or "should have ended when---" thing is pretty much completely moot when discussing their status as iconic villains.

>>1192606>>1192606I'm frankly surprised they haven't added Art the Clown yet considering his insane popularity these lastf Ew years. He's pretty much the main modern active movie slasher villain.
Personally, I'd love to see more obscure ones like Harry Warden and Matt Cordell get in there, but I am also aware that will never happen.

>>1192611While I still think Candyman would be an interesting character to add I did just remember his actor from the films died only just last year so.. I don't know. Too soon?
Art would be fun. I feel that has a lot of potential for just being an all around funny kind of joke character... Although talking about clowns how about the Joker? Pennywise?
You know what fuck it add Voldermort, although I imagine him having an instant kill spell would be a tad op
