Problems as Omani.
Indian superalliances that I can't weasel my way into. Timurids are holding on well. Poor contact with the west lagging technology bad. Perpetually exhausted manpower and economic shortcomings that make mercenary armies untenable.
Plan
Horn of Africa. I have taken most of the countries I can reach outside of Mamluk guaranteed Alderaan. Outclassed by Ethiopia, but I greatly outclassed their navy. No claims by Mamluk in Ethiopia. Alderaan can be fed to my vassal during this war. Potential pitfalls. At least 10 years of consolidation. Weakened and angry Mamluks. The worthless Ethiopian Trade Node. Even more development facing away from Europe.

It is on this day that we honor the lives lost in the crucial battle of Alpha Caeli. After years of war, the Federation was able to strike a crippling blow against the Klingon Empire, but not without taking casualties of our own.
It was this battle that resulted in the current state of the Klingon Empire, still struggling to rebuild to their former height from before their war with the Federation. In the years after, the Husnak Ascendancy declared war against the weakened Klingon Empire, a war that is still being waged despite both weakened states battering themselves against one another. Should one gain a significant advantage over the other and win that war, that will define what threats the Federation will face in the quadrant.
The coalition between the Ferangi Alliance, and the Sheliak Corporate is making headway into the territory of the Romulan Empire. While the Federation is not directly involved, we continue to show support to our historic friends the Ferangi. Many Ferangi citizens of the Federation have friends or relatives in the Alliance that are seeking to loosen the hold of the totalitarian Romulans in the quadrant. There is talk of a faction in league with the Romulans, however they have been present for only the initial battles of the war. They are called the Fen Domar States, and there are rumors that they were forced to pull back to their own territory to repel an outside threat of unknown origin. The rumors don't end there. Talk of entire worlds not only being occupied, but soon laying down their resistance to join fully with this occupying force within the span of a few months have some Federation citizens nervous.
Nevertheless, the Federation itself is now once again at peace, and is devoting resources back into the extensive terraforming programs that were in progress before the attacks from the Cardassian Union and Klingon Empire. In the last five years, six new planets have been made suitable for the multitude of species that are living together in the Federation. The future is looking prosperous for the Federation.

I'm not sure if you caught the multiplayer game. At the end, there were some very salty players. >>8312I'm not quite lagging far enough behind for the cost to make sense, but it will hurt a lot more by the end of the century. It is only 1515. I had a free ideas slot so I grabbed exploration. >>8318Coward strats!
So I let them have a couple of occupied planets, and then went out of my way to just ignore that and just start obliterating their spaceports. Then I occupied a planet as far away from my territory as possible to drive them away. Once I'd bled them of raw resources, I started to go after their fleet. I'd engage until I was at risk of losing some of my important ships, then bail. My ships would appear back and available for use somewhere deep in my territory where it was safe, and the Klingon fleet just got more and more damaged and had nowhere to go for repairs. So I won by merit of ruining the Klingon economy, essentially.

>>8324I was able to make a bit of time. In the first war with the Cardassian Union, their primary target was the Cardassian Republic, not the Federation. However, as they would need to eventually attack me directly, I could let them have a few early victories against the Republic as I dealt with the Klingons. The Klingons were attacking the Federation directly in their own war, not as an ally of the Cardassians. So I dealt with the Klingons first, before swirling around to deal with the Cardassians.
In the end I was able to bring both to a White Peace, which suits me fine. I'm actually not looking to expand my territory again any time soon. There are a lot of planets I've yet to colonize within my own borders. I'll let my enemies fight among themselves for a while.

>>8328 That sums it up pretty well!
In the first, France declared war on Aragon, and Aragon had a vassal Savoy. But rather than joining the war like a normal vassal, Savoy was a scutage vassal, so it never joined the war. So while France was at war with Aragon, it declared a separate (negotiated?) war on Savoy which Aragon couldn't join because it was already at war with France. Under normal circumstances I would say, yeah, it's an exploit and should probably have a rule against it, but the war ended with a peace deal between France and Aragon in which France got land from Savoy, so either way, France needed to declare war and the result was ok with both France AND Aragon, the two nations directly involved. Why Venice (the host) was so against it, I'm really not sure. As far as I'm concerned, the issue resolved itself.
The Ottomans and France allying is a bigger issue that happens in multiplayer games - coalitions recruit the strongest useful allies available. I can see both sides of the issue and I don't think there should be a rule against it. However I think it is generally bad for the game and should be discouraged. But it also depends on the way people are playing. As it is, super-powerful France doesn't really bother me because he doesn't seem to want to destroy my nation or the HRE, but if he just goes after Aragon repeatedly, I could see that as a problem that players (in game) should do something about. The Ottomans player is of the "it's ok if I kill you because you can move to a different country" mentality and is most likely to cause problems in a mega-coalition. As far as the argument, I'm on the side of less rules being better.
It looks like I'll be picking up (and hopefully installing) a radiator tomorrow!

>>8332I mean. If the injured party agreed with it then it is rather excessive to impose, isn't it? The second one is more reasonable, but begs the question of what happens in areas where a similar thing is possible on a smaller scale. I do think it would be good to have something in the rules that ultimately discourages things that make the game less enjoyable, like limiting the selection of certain "privilege" countries multiple times in a row.
