If you're single, Valentine's Day is centered around making you feel bad about yourself.

If you're in a relationship of whatever sort, then Valentine's Day is centered around gigantic all-powerful businesses wanting you to spend money in mega-stores on various things for your partner (such as literal shiny objects) instead of giving them what they actually want (such as caring hugs).

For both groups, Valentine's Day is generally a standard workday that's got a weird emotional layer smattered atop what you're otherwise having to do.

Is there like any reasonable non-commercial purpose for Valentine's Day these days?

I'm single and I don't feel bad at all on Valentine's Day. Guess I must be doing something wrong there.

OR it's centered around stuffing yourself with chocolates.

that you bought for yourself

It's absolutely commercial, but heck, so's every holiday.

The whole "ugh commercialism" argument is so strange. Most holidays have been like that for a good long while - including nack in the "good old days" people love bringing up. Its just an excuse to grumble and be an old crank at this point.

Happy Waifu Day!

Let your fictional waifu, tulpa or body pillow know how much you love them!

If you're single you can just ignore it. It's not centered around you. Thats a narcissistic way of looking at it.

If you're not single, you can ignore it too if you want, or you could celebrate it in a non commercial way with your partner.

Stop acting like you dont have choices in these matters. Corporations are only winning because people act like they have power, but they only have that power because people act like they have no other choice.
Go have a picnic with your s/o or cook a nice meal together at home or something. You don't have to do the corporate things.

It's a feast day in the Christian religion in the honor of their saint Valentine. That's the original purpose. You could still do that too if you wanted.

I'm suffering from seasonal affective disorder and I'm largely indifferent to it right now.
My existing relationships are mundane to the point where I want something new to happen.

idunno have never really been involved in any work culture, but as a little filly i have always liked heart-shapes and the idea of giving ponies hearts ....

but i imagine the corporate aspect is probably pretty awful. if corporations really cared about valentine's day, i suppose they would give you the day off (and maybe an extra $1,000 or so for that purpose) .....

looks like valentine's day was originally a distinctly ancient Roman festival called Lupercalia, which celebrated the founding of Rome ...themes: purification, fertility, sexuality - very ritualistic ....was later Christianized in 5th century by Pope Gelatius I (5th century) when the focus changed to romantic affection, love, and marriage ...(st. valentine appears to come in, or so the story goes, when he married people despite the emperor claudius ii's (3rd century) ban on marriage (claudius ii wanted to get more soldiers for a war or something (which it was also believed by philosophers of the time that it would weaken the state by not providing it with families, children, etc.)) ...)

this. ironically (but kind-of not really ..maybe(?) ....)

>>1204125
interesting how valentine's day falls almost halfway between imbolc (st. brigid's day) (celtic) and spring (although celtics didn't celebrate anything between imbolc and the spring equinox that i know of) ....

I'm single, and I'm mostly indifferent towards it. If not for this thread, I would have gone the entire year without thinking about it once, so thanks for that.
One way or another, commercialism sucks the soul out of everything it touches.
