Hello everyone! I hope you are doing well this (insert time of day for you), and that the vibes are good!

It's been a while since i've done a Kaizen thread, so what better time than the present?

Kaizen is something that is mostly popular in the business world, but i was introduced to it as a way of forming healthy habits! Even a small thing like 1 minute of work towards something a day builds the habit of doing that thing stronger and better in time! it's less focused on goals and more focused on setting up the individual to attain the goals, if that makes sense!

So i'm curious!

What are your "Kaizen"s?

What are you working on?

Is there something getting in the way? and if so, what are you doing to get around it?

and i'm really curious as to if you have any personal mantra or mindset you attain before you start that works for you?

So come on in and have a great time <3

It continues to be my health journey. At the start of last year after dad passed away when I got out of the hospital I decided to re-try my constantly failing challenge of going for a jog. I made it a couple of minutes before I had to stop? Then it was start-and-stop for all of a quarter mile. Right now I like going for a jog two or three times a week, with a 30 minute jog being my typical, 45 if I set out with that in mind. I could probably train myself up to an hour if I really wanted to, but I'm trying to be more well rounded. I used to be a quite muscular person so I'm working on getting that back too.

And it just... feels really good. Being tireless, and improving myself, but also the workout itself feels good.

My biggest goals are to go through this checklist at the moment, if we're talking short-term efforts at self-improvement... one tooth at a time!

I know that this isn't exactly what you're talking about in the OP, but I can't do habit-focused plans until I solve this first, same as how you can't drive a car to the place you want until you fill the tank first with enough gas (to use a driving analogy)!

One of my books I have in the works. I'm on chapter 3 of it, and this is the point where it starts to open up. Up until now only the main character and her family and one friend have been introduced, now as the world expands from beyond her house to her school, this is where all the other major characters need to be introduced. So far I have a guaranteed idea for introducing the "mentor" type character, but the rest is still largely up in the air. So it's a little daunting to get working on, but so far more than anything else Ive just been feeling like engaging in other activities instead of writing.

I havent even fully decided just how big the cast of important characters will be. I have a lot of ideas for potential ones, but I'm a little concerned with going overboard on it and I'm also not quite sure how everything else will play out so that also makes it difficult.

I have the main character, the love interest, an obsessed minor antagonist and the other middle antagonist paired with her, a mentor/protector type, and a couple concepts for potential members of the main characters "fellowship" that I developed base ideas for a long time ago and am not sure if they still work or not. All of these to be introduced in this chapter or else the section its a part of. I also have the main antagonist pretty far in development as well as a mysterious, powerful ally type character somewhat worked out.

It's a fursona related piece meant to be comedic about crime. Not sure what to make of it so far. Despite being the one who found the two key pieces of source material and being the one who wrote the first chapter already.

It's at: https://archiveofourown.org/works/54798682/chapters/138894091

A lot of this is me experimenting with writing my fursona as an 'out' bisexual and trans character.

I have an overall idea for what I want to do with the story, but I don't really plan out the plot beat by beat or anything like that. I usually have a specific idea of what I want to do for at least one section at a time, rather than chapter by chapter.

So for this story, I currently have it split up into the Start section, which takes place in 1) A dream 2) the main character's house and 3) the main character's neighborhood. Coming up is the School section, which I'm not really sure how long it will last. I basically know that I want to introduce the mentor character and the main character's "fellowship" or main group and I know how I want the School section to end, leading up to the MC being forced to leave her town for it's own safety and so she can discover stuff about the reason for her existence.

I'm planning on basing it off the Nazgul searching Hobbiton for Frodo and Durza trying to find Eragon in The Lord of the Rings and The Inheritance Cycle respectively, with a monster in the guise of a human trying to get information on her, which she ends up witnessing and she has to run away from it.

That's an example of my level of planning. I have key scenes in mind for certain sections and then I build around that.

I also have an overall plot idea, but I don't have all the details worked out. I'm really good at coming up with mysterious circumstances or mysteries, and really not great at figuring out the solution to the mystery, or the secret behind them.

One funny example of this is that my sci-fi story's premise is based around "all the androids that were created were suddenly and unexpectedly shut down, except for the main character" and part of the plot is her trying to figure out why that happened. The secret is: I don't even know what happened yet!

So yeah, I have a basic idea of what I want to do, but I let the details come as I write.

It's low fantasy by definition, taking place in a fantastical version of our own world. I would categorize it more as supernatural fantasy, though, rather than something like traditional urban fantasy of "elves, dwarves, etc in our world".

The concept is that humans and monsters have for our entire existence always been at odds with each other. Just like in our world, the existence of monsters was always questionable, except of course they DID exist. Not just traditional monsters like vampires and werewolves, but also the traditional version of fantasy creatures, Fae and such also figure into the situation. However, the setting of the story is not one where the world of humans and monsters are still separate, like you would see in something like X-Files or Supernatural, but rather by the time the story starts, the integration of monster and human societies has been going on for 18 years (I originally started working on the story in 2018, so that's still basically when it's set.)

The town that the main character lives in was chosen for what is called the "Utopia Project" because of it's location in a still-developing part of a rural community. The town itself is like a small city rather than a small town, but it's still not that big and is located near the start of a forest. The school that the main character goes to is a recently opened Utopia Academy, a school where both human children and the children of whatever supernatural creatures have children go to together.

It's essentially taking the concept of desegregation from the 1960s and bringing it to modern times, except instead of white people and nonwhite people, it's humans and supernatural creatures (still often referred to as "monsters").

The main character herself is a hybrid of one of the most dangerous and feared monsters in the world and human, though at the start of the story she is unaware of this but it is one of the key things she learns about herself that starts the plot moving forward.

The monster itself is one I sort of created myself. Originally it was meant to be a w*ndigo, but due to cultural concerns I decided to scrap that idea and rather take the westernized version of said creature, usually depicted as some sort of large humanoid monster with a malnourished body and a deer skull with massive antlers for a head, and turn it into something separate, since it's not an accurate representation of w*ndigo in the first place. I call them Limos or Limoi, named after the Greek goddess/personification of starvation.

In the world, there are supernatural creatures that wish to live peacefully with humanity, and there are those that want to continue living an adversarial, hunter/prey relationship with humanity that had been going on since the start of human history. You might assume that monsters that historically prey on humans would want to continue that, but it's actually not the case with a lot of them. A major exception are the Limoi, while others like Vampires are actually for the most part happy to live peacefully with humans. There are also outliers, like the Fae who instead of wanting to live adversarially with humans, just want to continue living separately. Most world governments consider them to be their own sovereign nation, despite living within the borders of the human societies.

There's a lot of other interesting world-building stuff I've been working on, stuff that has to do with the political landscape of the human world, as well as stuff to do with Heaven and Hell(s, there are two of them actually!). One of the things I like a lot about the former is this idea that because humans and supernatural creatures are trying to live peacefully with each other, human encroachment onto the natural world has been stalled, because so many supernatural creatures call natural places their home. So environmental issues have been curbed somewhat.

Anyways, my plan is to have it be a series of sorts. I kind of want to do a trilogy, but I'm not sure if my current idea for it is something I still want to go with. Essentially, the first book is meant to follow the main character's journey of self-discovery, a coming-of-age type story sorta like Percy Jackson or the aforementioned Inheritance Cycle, where she learns about why she exists, and why she is important in the world, as well as coming out of her shell while also learning to embrace her monstrous side rather than try and repress it like she has been up until this point.

Then I want the second book to dive more in depth into stuff going on in the Twinned Hells and their ongoing battle with Heaven. The relationship between humanity and the higher powers that influence them as well as the relationship of both humanity and supernatural creatures with the afterlife. The main love interest of the first book is a ghost girl, and the main antagonist is a girl being influenced by a demon, so the first book is sprinkled through with little connections to the second book's story.

And finally the third book is meant to dive even further into detail on Heaven itself, angels and God, who has not been around for the past couple thousand years, perhaps even longer. It's also meant to deal with the apocalypse as well, something I also plan to sprinkle in little details of throughout the other two books.

So I've got a lot going on with it!

Honestly all I really want to do is to get through it. I have all the main important information, more or less, there's a few small details I still need to work out, but it's mostly technical stuff.

All I really have worked out is the start of the story, up until she leaves her home town. The whole middle of the story is still up in the air, but I probably won't be able to come up with anything for it until I get the start fully worked out. I also don't know exactly how it's supposed to end, I just know the main big reveals. There's still a lot of other stuff to work on.

Which basically means I just have to get to writing it, so I can finish the beginning and start thinking of ways to fill the middle.

>and i'm really curious as to if you have any personal mantra or mindset you attain before you start that works for you?

A cup of coffee ">_> doesn't have to be caffienated. I thi k it's just the act of having a nice warm dri k to sip on while I'm doing something.

Not exactly a kaizen, more just trying to keep a new yars resolution, but i have managed to read two books (of the target goal of 5) by an author I have never read before. I have until December to finish the last three, and the next book I'm going to stat at work tonight is Out Of The Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis

If it's something that helps on the way to reaching your goal, then it sounds pretty kaizen to me!

And 3 books in 8 months sounds doable! Are you enjoying your new years resolution, ella?

Let's see if  can do a post without typos this time!

Yea I guess so! I feel a bit stuck in my old writing style and wanted to branch out a bit, so I've been trying to study other styles.

I am, a lot actually. I've been borrowing books from my boyfriend and he's been giving me bangers. The first one was Assasins Of Tamurin, and it was a -little- hard for me to pay attention at certain parts with all the politcal pieces needing to be placed, but it was areally good read! And then I read Joust by Mercedes Lackey and oh man! New favourite!

I have done basically nothing productive other than record games for two days and I am getting mopey about it.

Had a mood dip yesterday evening like I haven't had in a while, even with the meds.

Iunno what the fuck my problem is.

While I rarely meet my fitness goal, and it's a particularly low bar in general terms that's only set like this due to me being partially disabled, I... did what I set out to do for today! Neat!

I kinda wish I was your dommy mommy so I can give you a quota. And to give you positive reinforcement for not pushing yourself too hard. Oh well, we sometimes can't have what we want in the present moment.
