Well it appears the winter has finally passed, and with that the days are becoming warmer and it feels like life is already much busier than before.

It might be the ending of winter, the warmth of spring, or the familiar songs I heard when showering but somehow it feels the days are more nostalgic and familiar to me. Both the good times, as well as the trials.

With all that going on I have to remind myself as well as I remind others to take time to relax, have a nice warm drink, and feel at ease to talk about what's on your minds. So I welcome you all once again to join in and consider this a welcoming space for all

Bwahaha. Honestly I do get it. Have a backlog but no urge to play or do anything

 No.1164623

>>1164622

The thing with the backlog is that I'm in the mood for something specific. There's a whole list of requirements for what Seems Good.
1. Ideally familiar yet absolutely NOT something I've played before unless there's a very good reason to return (gotta have this rule or I'd still be hardstuck in WoT)
2. Something not too heavy on the "gotta get involved and keep track of many things to not lose my place in the game"
3. Ideally something playable with a gamepad, or if not then not too heavy on the keyboard+mouse mechanics since I can't be bothered to hook those up
4. The vibe needs to be right, there needs to be that je ne sais quoi emanating off of it

And so, I'm hardstuck at the library screen. Personal recommendations could cut through it but are hard to come by

 No.1164625

>>1164623
>>1164622

Oh also, 5. It needs to be an actual game, with actual failure states and some challenge to it. None of the dad or post-dad stuff for me, thank you

 No.1164627

Dad or post dad stuff? That's an unusual statement. But I get the concept. It's gotta be just right for the moment time place and feeling

 No.1164628

>>1164627

A dad game is basically "relax doing a straightforward activity where you gradually improve a thing until it's done". Think Powerwash Simulator, or Lawn Mowing Simulator. A post-dad game is this + "but what if we tried getting fancy with it and added twists on top with actual mechanics or story". Think Hardspace: Shipbreaker, with its mechanics and a (tacked-on) story. "Dad game" was a thing that existed for a while, "post-dad game" is to my knowledge a term relatively recently coined by Yahtzee.

These games could technically meet my four points, but naw. They'll fail on 5.

Looks like a quality piece that's not my cup of tea, too bad. The kind of game I wish for the most right now is probably a metroidvania, though for now I dug up Everhood in my Steam library. I can't take it in very high doses but so far it's quite an interesting experience. If you don't know it, the short of it would be "what if Undertale-style game, but the bullet hell sections are rhytm-based and the whole thing is vaguely psychedelic". Quite neat.

It is! Also it plays around with various mechanics and presentations, and has a well defined clean and unique style, heavily focusing on negative spaces in a way you wouldn't normally see in games. The music itself is pretty good, too. Definitely worth a look, it's one of those weird hidden indie gems. Very trippy though.

I think scishow touched on this. They were growing algae in watertanks in the wall in som cities as an experiment. Trees wouldn't work for a few reasons, but the algae was cost effective and didn't take as much room/resources per square foot.

So not totally off!

Huh. That was real? I've seen some Genius Takes about algae in vats and it was always the same picture and always the same caption, posted to always the same reaction, to the point that I assumed it was just made up ragebait.

Anyway, algae wouldn't work so good for this scheme because with algae you need the infrastructure to keep it. Trees you should be able to just plant wherever, just with an empty spot, and extending it would be easy if you could get saplings off of already having some trees around. Also the point would be to have an excuse to have more trees around. The whole "helps with urban climate regulation, provides shade, just looks nice and is good for people's mental health" bit is often just not cutting it. My city is actually pretty good about it, but I'm thinking of other places.

I honestly don't know. Up until now I assumed they were probably made up, since when people link it it IS usually phrased as "they have made tree replacements so we can get rid of trees entirely! Hooray for the boring dystopia we live in!". I'm basically just looking them up properly now.

At this point I'm still thinking "art project" though (so, aesthetics but also I guess some artsy message), what with it always being this one tank in every picture I've seen. But the quotes from the creators have them put forth the idea that it's intended as a thing to absorb the pollution in polluted areas, as the algae handle that better than trees. I don't have an opinion on how viable that is though (and whether it's a real thing or an excuse to have the city do some cool arts installations).

>>1166242

It is pretty! My concern is if they can keep the algae from forming strands, since then it'll start to look like a very badly maintained aquarium. But while it's just Green Water, it looks quite neat.

Especially when they light it up at night!
