I noticed that it's already episode four, and they've already covered character development for two of the major characters already. I figured that kinda stuff would be later episodes, either near end-season or season 2.

I'm guessing Vivziepop regards Hazbin Hotel will be short-lived, given how long it took to get past pilot.

I'm also still wondering if any of the Helluva characters will show up, like the seven deadly sins.

That's sadly a thing for animated shows in general.

Due to many streaming platforms (Netflix primarily) using pretty scummy tactics like ordering one big season that they split into several to avoid having to give people raises based on the show's success, and their tendency to rather unceremoniously cancel shows, showrunners now tend to write under the assumption that they get what amounts to one regular TV-season.

So plots get condensed "filler" is filtered out somewhat, and major turning points are placed at strategic moments in case of season splitting or sudden cancelation.

It is a hellscape out there for animation showrunners right now.

Damn, I didn't know all that. That kinda explains what happened to Make Your Mark, I guess...

 No.1158076

>>1158075
I am not entirely sure about Amazon's reputation regarding this. They have treated Invincible pretty well so far.

But you have to understand from a showrunner perspective that if the biggest platform pulls crap like this, it's safe to assume it can happen just as well anywhere else.

Think of how many shows that ended on a cliffhanger because someone at the top suddenly yoinked the show away even when everyone was fully convinced they'd been greenlit for a new season. Now give them like... half the season lengths they used to get on flow TV.

If you look at the release schedules of some shows, it gets pretty apparent.

Take Centaurworld.

Season 1 released on July 30th 2021 and consisted of 10 episodes, at approximately 25 minutes apiece (discarding credits and such)

Season 2 released on December 7th the same year and was 8 episodes long, all at the same length, though episode 8 was a 70 minute special, bringing it back to approximately 10 x 25 minutes.

250 minutes worth of animation, completed in five months and one week? Nope.

I suspecto ne of the reasons Netflix does this is to cultivate a more constant stream of content and excitement, hoping to keep audiences engaged instead of dumping a whole season that gets watched in two days and then leaving the audience waiting a whole year. It's preferable to dumnp 10 episodes with a few months in between so the audience doesn't "forget" about the show, at least from their standpoint.

The other, as I mentioned above, is to avoid having to pay people working on the show more based on its success and the ordering of more seasons.

 No.1158083

>>1158081
Couldn't the content creators choose whenever or not their TV shows are scheduled or not?

Like, what if they want their episodes weekly, or for the whole season to be available on release date?

 No.1158084

>>1158083
To my understanding, release / airtime schedule is not usually up to the creators, but to the distributors.

And of course different ditributors, like everyone else, have different opinions and try to change with the market, with their decisions largely formed by what they think will maximize profit and audience engagement for that particular IP.

So that's why you get the ones that do weekly episodes like the old days of Flow TV, some that release two episodes weekly, some that dump a whole season at once, etc.

 No.1158085

Mind you, I am hardly an expert, I am just quoting what I have come to understand from reading showrunners comments on their own experiences, as well as reading up on the trivia behind some of the shows I watch, and this seems to me to be how it goes.

it could depend on a number of different things, but in any project, once you know your allotted time, you make adjustments where you need. Season 1 is slotted to have 8 episodes, but there is a second season in the works

in an ideal world, every show would have as many episodes as the show runner desires, but as esh mentioned below, a lot of that is dependent on distributors and studio and what budget they are willing to put into the show. and given that Hazbin Hotel and Vivziepop are independent born IP, they are most likely being a little bit restrictive with that part.

still i love what they've done so far, and even if the first couple episodes are a bit frantic paced, i know that is to let the rest of the show breathe and be as incredible as it can be.

>>1158075
>>1158076
amazon prime has some great shows on it, and it's a distributor that has reputation within the industry. being on that versus netflix or vice versa isn't a tell of how good or bad a show is, as they both have good and bad shows.

I was referring to Prime's reputation regarding how they treat shows and wether or not they pull Netflix-esque nonsense, and how I dunno about that. I have not seen enough Amazin prime shows outside of Invincible or The Boys to say one way or the other about the overall quality.

>Strike's effect on bisecting seasons
Who on Earth knows. Ideally, they'll find some way to put a stop to it, cause it's a really scummy way to just basically pat yourself on the back for nothing and go "Look how succesful the shows we keep not renewing are! Look at aaaaalll these seasons!"

As far as I can recall, I think this is the first major animated show Amazon Prime has put together

But outside of that, Amazon Prime does not have the same reputation that Netflix has with cancelling shows. Generally if a show is popular, they don't cancel it.

Also it should probably said that this isn't like, a SOLELY Amazon Prime production. A24 is the producer of the show, Amazon Prime is just their streaming partner. Even if Amazon Prime doesn't continue with it at some point, doesn't mean it would be completely dead in the water.

Personally if the show does well in viewership I don't foresee it getting cancelled early. Just because Prime doesn't have much of a track record for arbitrarily cancelling shows.

 No.1158127

To clarify further:

I wasn't saying Amazon is likely to out-of-nowhere cancel this.

I was saying, in response to someone feeling the show crammed a lot into relatively few episodes (I have only seen the first one myself), that some of the common approaches to writing for shows in general has changed a bit alongside the nature of streaming in a lot of ways, like how much shorter seasons become, a bigger focus on serialization, etc.

And one of the things affecting this is definitely knowing that some of the biggest platforms have a noticable tendency to pull the rug away from under them with very little warning.

Not that that didn't happen before streaming either, it's just happening a lot now, and a lot more people are made aware of it, and try to adjust accordingly.

Look at Infinity Train - that ran a risk in general by counting on getting a total of eight seasons, even if said season was only the length of a single feature film - and they more or less got told to pack their shit and go halfway into making Season 4 with next to no warning. Result being that it left us all not just on a major cliffhanger, but on a season that was deliberately written to be a somewhat lighter story, meant to give the viewers a moment to breathe before they picked up on the plot threads from the season before it.

I don't think that's something any creative want, if they actually have an endgame with their shows and haven't designed it to be fully episodic in the first place.

At least some shows have gotten the saving grace of, even in the face of sudden cancellation, being allowed to make an actual finale. Molly McGee being the most recent example.

I think it's much more likely that this person who has never made a show like this before, where even Helluva Boss is a different sort of show, maybe just doesn't... really know how to do pacing correctly. And might learn how to do it better as time goes on.

Just a possibility.

I always instinctively turn my nose up at 'adult' cartoons. Like I instinctively figure they're all haha funny dick jokes for mature people. It's adult because it's inappropriate for children, not because it's actually made with deeper themes in mind.

I have no idea whether Hazbin is that kind of 'adult' cartoon or not. But Astra Bolt of Ponychan fame streamed some of the songs from YouTube for me yesterday and Jesus Christ I did not know Captain Anderson Mass Effect could sing like that. What the fuck. Shit's amazing.

The Fiddler on the Roof

 No.1161233

I feel like the key to succeeding in a musical is a)be ridiculously over-the-top and melodramatic in the sense of being the wish-fulfillment at the audience craves deep down and also b)play everything completely straight so that no matter how comedic, offbeat, weird, et cetera happens it's all heart.

This is a great example: there's no way really that it makes logical sense. Playing upbeat r&b music loudly in public will make schoolgirls in a fiercely segregated neighborhood start playing together? Let alone the radio's power makes local teenage dudes start dance fighting each other in a way that ends all dramatically happy? And yet. It works.

Admittedly, one of my biggest hang-ups in not wanting to get into either 'Hazbin Hotel' or 'Helluva Boss' beyond my casual interest in the past is that they're about extremely serious and prickly issues such as anxiety, child abuse, depression, homophobia, and transphobia plus even more. As well as the broader context of violent religious divisions coming up. Which like I feel that you should only get into in musicals if you're extremely well-thought out in what you say on those subjects. I genuinely hate it when you have something like 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' or 'Spider-Man' cartoons releasing episodes for kids about like, say, people contracting HIV/AIDS or other really serious subjects that're all glib and poorly treated due to lazy writing (i.e. "Man, this AIDS thing really sucks! I'm buying you a pizza, dude!").

Also it turns out I don't hate any of the songs individually. There's just too many of them. 16 full length songs over just 8 episodes of only 20 minutes each. That's nearly a third of the show's runtime dedicated to just singing. it gets tired very fast.

they are fucking phenomenal songs though, and it is a musical, so music is sorta implied in the show

if it ain't your cup of tea, that's fine, but it would be weird to have a musical with less music

Well yeah, they're all pretty good. I think there's only one below B tier, and they all remind me of Wicked. I don't have a problem with any of the songs individually. I guess I just wasn't expecting the Disney Princess Musical from Hell

Ooh I love Wicked <3 I saw that live in Denver many many years ago!

And if you are coming from Helluvaboss to Hazbin Hotel, they do have very different energies despite being the same universe. That being said, Disney princess in hell is my crack for sure! I wouldn't mind getting a Charlie tattoo, although that will have to wait till I'm more financially stable

I wonder... what about getting knuckle tattoos that would have actually useful information on them?

What about a tattoo that depicts part of a street map? Or the entire layout of some location? Or a tattoo detailing somebody's birthday, being done on the behalf of somebody who matters to you a lot? What about a set of numbers to help remember a "Wi-Fi password" somewhere?

Imagine if somebody looks into demonic rituals more, and we see something like transgender people going "I cast a volcano curse on your cock!" or "I cast a snow curse on your cock!"?
