At this point it feels like the amount of depressed people exceeds by a large margin the amount of "happy" people, at least online.

Why bother.

Yeah, probably NSFW.  There was a long discussion of this, and IIRC, the guidance is to err on the side of caution and images like that should be marked NSFW.

Some symptoms of depression can be related to other more transient conditions. I'd say most everybody suffers from those symptoms at some point or another.

Funny, used to wonder the same thing.
I;d take a look at statistics in places like the USA, esp. families, drug abuse and life span.  CDC came out with something interesting.
https://www.ajc.com/lifestyles/health/cdc-life-expectancy-declines-for-second-year-row/yLLkZKYpnnKfw8exIvdVMM/

Bottom line, the miserable people are slowly removing themselves so in a way it may balance out over time, thing is these people breed and create even nastier versions of themselves.  For me, I could care less how many miserable people there are, they can blow their brains out for all I care, I had an awful life and at this point don't really have much to lose, seeing entitled shitlords and their families suffer is always funny.  Thing is, there are millions of people like me and for those of you who want kids, this is going to cause a huge problem.  Many of us lack the income that those fortunate enough to come from good families have and in many places that have very high costs of living property taxes keep going up.  IT will be you who has to shell out even more momney for your kids wellbeing in an increacingly unsafe, drug addled world.  There are parks in seattle that have to sweep the parts for heroin needles before the kids can go out and play, that was unheard of decades ago.

So yeah, there would be a good reason I'd think for you to bother, it will be your children who suffer more from this, not you and a good chunk of us will sit back and watch it all burn.

Depression is a fairly common thing.

And online, it's easier to find other people with depression, to vent about it, etc etc.

>Why bother

I don't know. I just find a small reason to get out of bed each day, even if it's as simple as "feed the cat".

I've though about it, too, especially in broad terms.  The line of analysis is held back by a lack of comparative information on depression.  Go back to the 1800's, and it was called melancholia, and people mentioned it, yes, but what I'm curious about is whether something in modern society is making people sadder or whether modern communication is allowing sad people more freedom of expression.

The changes from, say, the 1800's to now have widened someone's subjective world.  The state and employers have largely replaced duties of family, and competition for distinction has become global.

Of course, in the case of your CDC article, you're looking for a narrower trend.  Perhaps recent economic trends in America.

 No.883354

People are more aware of their own feelings but that doesn't mean they care about anyone else's.

Lack of empathy is a big deal in today's society especially with the internet. There's big "we don't care about your feelings" movements.
