Wanted to do this yesterday but got too busy and had to pick and choose obligations. But, i 'finished' my model for my sprint 0 goal! In quotes, because i will probably still tinker with it in blender and see if those tools can help further refine the model.

I didn't get much work done prior to the deadline (i.e. monday) which is something i'll need to work on--consistent progress over the week. I think i really have my work cut out for me, given the difficulty and complexity of doing just this basic model. I'm not going to adjust the timeline here yet thought, we'll see if i can stick to creating a model every 2 weeks (along side learning tasks.

Anyway, anyone have anything they'd like to share too? What have you been up to the past week?

'Finished' model. Irpo has really poorly defined lower body in the comic they're from. So i had to take some artistic liberty with that. I'd like to see if blender has better smoothing tools to take out the rough/lumpy spots, but otherwise i'm pretty happy with it for a first attempt.

Heya Noelle, thanks <3

Yeah i did import the model in blender and it seemed to have a lot of powerful tools, but i didn't have much time tonight to experiment so we'll see! Somewhere i need to fit in some time to gain expertise in blender. But what I'll say having used blender a tiny bit is that the VR sculpting experience is a bajillion times better to work with! It's really frustrating trying to navigate 3d space and sculpt all at once with keyboard and mouse. Everything feels so intuitive and responsive in vr. But i guess i knew that's how it'd be anyway

So do you have a weekly schedule you try to roughly adhere too? Yes, it's great feeling ahead~

i definitely see why VR modeling is a lot better, but us normies have to use the keyboard and mouse!  although i would probably use my tablet

i try to get something out every friday at 5:00am, so my goal every week is to have soemthing out by then.

some weeks are easy (like this one) and i get done like a day or two and i have time to relax

some weeks are tough cause i get a bit too ambitious or something gets in my way, and then i find myself staying up till 4:30am to push the video out ><

 No.1102246

Haven't got anything to show for it just yet, but I'm working on my next tabletop campaign.  General idea is it's supposed to take place in space, on a luxury cruise liner travelling between Earth and Mars.  Some way through an unidentified object was noticed not far from the path and they're instructed by command to investigate.  They bring it on board and aren't entirely sure what to make of it, but the more sciency part of the crew sets up a lab and starts studying things.  To shorten the story a bit here (and skip over parts I haven't cemented yet), things go wrong.  Most of the crew and passengers are afflicted with uncontrolled mutations, and a good portion that hasn't has gone mad.

With the ship thorougly in disarray, the party wakes up with amnesia and the game starts.  As they explore the ship (which I assume they will do because if they don't then why did they agree to play in the first place) they will undergo their own mutations that they have to deal with.

The trick to all this being that the mutations are supposed to be beneficial.  The object that was found was a sort of welcome capsule from another civilization, not unlike stuff we've launched with various records and what have you.  This civilization happens to be very advanced, and through various forms of genetic manipulation they've managed to develop their whole species into something humanity might consider godlike.  The objects in the capsule were intended to help progress other species towards their own heightened existence, but of course universal communication is not anyone's strongpoint, with neither civilization actually having any alien contact before, and the way the foreign civilization reacts to these ideas and treatments do not line up with human physiology.

The party, unbeknownst to them due to the amnesia, has already been experimented on, and were in fact one of the final test subjects.  A doctor testing one last theory, prior to succumbing to a madness induced by freshly psychic waves emanating not just from the recovered objects but also some of the passengers now, has induced amnesia in the hopes that a lack of knowledge about the experiments will allow a more gradual transition into their effects.  And if the party decides to embrace their mutations and manages them appropriately, it'll work.  In the best case scenario they'll even be able to fix what went wrong with other people as a result.  But I'm also planning on having a few ideologies from the remaining survivors trying to cope with what's going on or simply escape the ship.  What the party pursues is obviously up to them.

With lyrics of "I searched for form and land / For years and years I roamed / I gazed a gazeless stare" and such, I always thought that the metaphor was pretty clearly about depression, dehumanization, and isolation? Not thinking that there's a point in life, essentially? Same sort of thing as a lot of the songs by the Smiths, I'd say.

Yeah, "The man who sold the world" is Bowie's past self, a lot of the song is about identity crisis, he essentially describes his present self meeting his past self at the beginning of the song. It's kind of why in the first chorus the man sings "I never lost control" while in the last repeat of the chorus it becomes "We never lost control"

 No.1102402

>>1102400
Identity crisis, exactly... didn't David Bowie have a very close relative who suffered from such extremely painful, severe depression that the relative committed suicide? I recall reading about that when the musician died a few years ago. Made me think.

[Edit] Found a news article that stated that Bowie had a difficult step-family situation in which his half-brother spent time in and out of mental hospitals for years until his half-brother committed suicide in 1986. Tough stuff.

Yeah he had a half-brother with severe schizophrenia. It had a big influence on the themes of his music early on. The album that man who sold the world appears on (also called The Man Who Sold The World) had a lot of songs about mental illness (alongside some of his darker songs about war, technology and religion)

In fact this was the original cover for the album (later replaced with a photo of Bowie on a couch in a dress with tarot cards scatteted on the floor), the building in the background was a mental institution, supposedly the one his half brother was living in.

As for my update this week, I've just done a bad job with my commitment to the roadmap. I did do some research though into the process of high end modeling and learned about programs like Substance Painter, which is a powerful tool to texture your models. Not that i should be surprised but it feels overwhelming, all the stuff that goes into high end modeling.

But i guess the thing is i don't have to start high end! The things i want to do right now are pretty simple and cartoony, so I'm gonna try to focus on modeling in Medium on my Quest and worry about the bigger picture later.

I decided my next model is going to be White, before she earned her human form. There are cutesy versions of White as a spider but i actually like her horrifying, true version better. Its cooler to me that she is this horrible looking spider monster but she is kind and generous to people like that. Beauty is skin deep and all that.

With any luck both platforms can cross advertise for each other! If it works the way at all.

I'm okay, struggling a little maybe. It's well known i set high standards and a fast pace for myself. I'm just feeling a bit overwhelmed the past week. I closed out a big project which i thought would be refreshing, but what I'm working on now is so poorly undefined that I'm really having a hard time dealing with so much uncertainty. Everyone in relying on the clarify things has been flaking out. So I'm going nowhere but that doesn't change my obligations to get things done. It's true i can push back on deadlines but I'm trying to promote and it's just a better story if i don't push back things.

Then yeah, my high achiever efforts in the rest of life aren't giving me much room to decompress. But I don't want to take a step back from anything I'm doing. If i cut anything out, it's like repeating a cycle of getting serious about something (modeling, or going to the gym, or sticking to a diet) then flaking out. I'm tired of flaking out on myself!

So yeah, not sure what I'm gonna do. Either something has to give or maybe i just need to keep it together until the end of the year when my promo is assured and i can slack off a little

What about you, how is?

Yeah, I'll be fine ultimately. I always am! It doesn't help that an update for my current gaming obsession came out and I've been sinking lots of spare time into that haha. I'm working on developing a pair of gaming systems. Not that I expect anybody to play them I just like making things and writing things. Honestly development shows that they're way too arduous to actually be fun. But...

The first system is a PvP cooperative board game. The players control different parties in a city based loosely on revolutionary Paris. The monarchy has been violently abolished following many years of chronic mismanagement, and it's up to the players to rebuild a metropolitan on the verge of total collapse. Players need to cooperate to rebuild the city and restore basic services, but only one player can get credit for any particular action. However the lead player takes the blame if other players disrupt the rebuilding process. There are also a few "everyone loses" scenarios if the players become a corrupt ineffectual stalemate of a government. Coups and the like. So backstabbing is the only way to get ahead, but if you don't actually work together to fix the city then the guillotine will try to fix your regime.

The other one and more recent is a hard magic system build around casting spells through actual stage magic. I'm still experimenting with ideas I like and dislike, but I want players building rube golberg machines of magical rituals. The latest thing I'm onto with it is a particular ritual requiring a number of catalysts that meet certain conditions, based on the perceptions of the audience. So a person given a particular card that by isn't the one they think it is meets the condition of "believing a lie" about it. Or doing the box trick with a beautiful assistant sawing her in half and putting her back together gives the "living creature" catalyst the condition of "split and made whole". By combining catalysts and conditions the magician meets certain conditions required to actually harness the arcane. What matters is that specific catalysts and conditions are present, but not that particular catalysts have particular conditions, any combination will do. But of course magic doesn't work if you know the trick behind it so if someone can see through your illusions and sleight of hand then the catalysts never get charged and the spell doesn't work and really it's just an elaborate excuse for a fantasy hard magic system to include top hats and leotards without it just being window dressing.

I started drawing schematics for animal enclosure that I would like to make. There's one that I haven't started yet, but I want to start drawing in the next few days.

The basic idea is to have long pipe like structures running across the walls of a room, filled with water, and plants hanging at aesthetic points. Some parts of the pipes I want to cut and silicone little windows in, and then fill the pipes with some small, colorful fish.

They will have to be big pipes, as I want the fish to be able to comfortably turn around, but they can't be so big as to have too much weight at any one point.

It's just a small part of an overall house I want to build in the near future. It will have to have some concrete flooring though, I think, or at least a good drainage system for any leaks that might occur.

I also want to have this be at the bottom, and have like, four more structures similar to t above. I want to have some snakes, some small lizards (possibly frogs too), a bug centered one, and then maybe some small friendly rodents, like four female mice, or maybe two rats.

I basically want a really cool animal room.

This is a pretty good example, though thy stocked it wrong lol

I often tell people to just get orange guppies, or orange cloud minnows, or even some mollies (though they get relatively big), if they want that goldfish look.

Woah. You made that? That looks awesome. You've really come a long way.

>>1103008
That animal room sounds really awesome. I think the pipes idea could work but it would depend on the size of the fish, and possibly the species. Water gets heavy fast though, so you'll want a stable base, but as long as you have enough vertical sections standard 1/4" PVC pipes should do the trick.
>>1103010
I'm no good at stocking fish. Ants are more my thing.

My daughter would probably love that one, as she's been in a renewed Steven Universe phase.
She drew Connie on reference a week ago.

Heh, well, Connie's fun. And probably my fave character in the game, too.
Oh awesome. I'm sure she did great.

Thanks. Wasn't even like, trying to make it look extra epic beyond putting in decent effort, if that makes sense. But it ended up looking really nice.

Also just so I can visit the states again cause I wanna.

But in all seriousness, that sounds awesome.

A friend of mine actually did house sitting for a friend who had like, an exotic pet daycare of sorts, that was pretty wild. Didn't exactly hang out in the "animal rooms" though, but there were ferrets, dogs, a bigass snake...

I love snakes. I finally got to hold a snake last month! My neighbor has some. It was a cutie 6' ball python. Her scales felt wet, but actually they were just super smooth. It was awesome. Also apparently most people aren't calm around snakes because my neighbor had no idea I'd never held one before.

Snakes are cool and all, but I don't think I'd be able to have or fully live with one.

Well, in fairness, the aforementioned snake did lead to a bit of a scare. I was staying over in the house my friend was housesitting, and when we laid down to sleep (on mattresses on the floor)... the snake had somehow gotten out of its terrarium, and squeezed in between the wall and the piece of furniture it was standing o, probably looking for heat. And this thing was tightening up, so we couldn't get it out no matter what we did. We had to just go to sleep knowing there was a huge ass snake loose.

I mean of course it didn't do anything, but it is a LITTLE hard not to lie there half-expecting to get choked.

>water gets heavy fast

Yea, it definitely does. It'll probably take a good amount of tweaking and testing, and having a few back up plans for if things go wrong.

I find ants REALLY interesting, but have getting close to them in the wild. I've never been near an ant farm though.

That, sounds rad, and I really want to see that type of thing be more common. Oh man, that would be so fun.

I love big snakes, but theres definitely limits on not just size, but also type, that a single person should ever safely handle by themselves. A 6-7 foot long bullsnake is going to be easy as shit compared to a constrictor, that literally uses that strength to hunt.

I think the biggest constrictor I would ever handle by myself (because they're days that I get pretty weak in the muscles), might be something like a rosy boa. But even then, I still might want another person there, depending on how big it was exactly.

You should start your own ant farm. You might need to buy a few queens though. This late in the year the only ants to mate outside the tropics are prenolepis imparis (winter ants) which prefer very cold temperatures and are boring to watch, or paratrechina Longicornis (black crazy ants) which have internal mating flights and are nearly impossible to capture wild queens.

Unless you're in the southern hemisphere or the tropics, in which case flights should be well under way for most species

I kind of wonder what ants you are dealing with.

Personally, an ant farm sounds fun, but I understand you really need a large space to build one and don't have a break out.

Not American ants. Usually. I think your area of the world is home to some rather large and aggressive ant species, but even my camponotus (carpenter ants) set up fit within a cubic foot.
I've kept pheidole (brown big head ant), nylanderia (tawny crazy ant), paratrechina Longicornis (black crazy ant), camponotus (carpenter ant), and briefly had a solenopsis xyloni (mojave fire ant) queen

As a European, I don't deal with big bugs.

I mostly have lasius niger at my home (I think) and some yellow meadow ants. Perhaps some Argentine ants, because they're everywhere.

I do think I've seen some larger carpenter ants on my walks outside, though.

Well...I don't have a phobia of hardly anything...except ants lol. And it's like, I think they're awesome and super cool actually, and really interesting to watch, but I just hate being near any situation that there is even a slight possibility that they could crawl on me. Even if they're harmless, I just can't.

Ah, sorries. I had you confused with someone else who lives in south america.

lasius niger is a wonderful ant for beginner ant keepers. they usually fly in late september, hibernate for the winter, and start producing eggs en masse in the spring. very easy to feed and keep, and quite active, so fun to watch.

>>1103195
yeah, I don't like them crawling on me most of the time either. my hand? fine. Anywhere else? Heck no!

Also the smaller black ones who don't sting?
Or do you often deal with larger stinging ants?

>>1103218
I know that they are black ants of about 3 > 5 mm long and are very common in my life.
I do know they tend to release their queens in July / August, especially on hot days. Then the entire yard is covered in their flying progenitors.

There is the weird thing, where they usually show up in my house in May : June and stick around for a couple of weeks and then leave again. I do feel like they've gotten more bold compared to last year in really being all around the house.

So, think i'm done with this one now. Been learning a lot about the tools trying to get some of these curves and points to look sharp! If i started from scratch again it'd look a lot better, but i think it makes sense to move on to the next one! I have an idea to do Anne and Sprig together for my next one with a more dynamic pose than what i've been doing so far. i think that's a good step up in terms of difficulty compared to the first two characters i did
