Now you know me, guys, I am the one who mocks everyone for nostalgia and I am a stern believer that we should move forward... However, it just dawned on me that Flash is truly drying.
Flash has been a constant part of my life, in part, thanks to Neopets. I just logged into Neopets after a long while and seeing all the pages almost broken due to the lack of flash functionalities made me feel a different sort of way.
Time is going through, and I got existential dread, and also longing time for Neopets and the times I spent there. I dunno how to describe it and I guess I am mostly rambling.
I will miss Flash, and Macromedia Shockwave.
I generally think HTML 5 is superior to flash, though I miss when musicians would use flash to make interactive music videos like Arcade Fire used to do: https://www.justareflektor.com/m
You'll need a webcam and a smartphone to interact with this video

I too am sad that Adobe, Google, and Mozilla decided to break old Flash websites on new web browsers. Granted, the Flash plugin was never very secure, but would it really have been so hard to sandbox it? Most of the Flash content is pretty old, so even slow emulation would work okay in many cases. I guess the only solution now is to use a VM with an older web browser with the Flash plugin.

I wonder what is going to happen to 4chan's Flash board (/f/). It still looks pretty active.

I wish I knew why flash was deemed obsolete, though. I will never understand the whole thing.>>1069729
Luckily most people backed up flash things. So I am sure few things are going to become truly a lost media.

I feel like there's some flash games or animations out there that are worth being saved, but I just can't remember.
It's mostly because newer tools for making web applications that can run on a browser alone
, without needing to install any other software generally became preferable amongst most of the social media giants. You no longer need flash for YouTube and haven't for a fairly long time now.

i'm going to miss neo... it looks like it'll try holding on for a while, but it doesn't look good!
good bye flash. many great memories were made because of you

I miss it, too. Luckily you can still run flash externally if you want, but it's a real shame to see it go.
I saw a lot of cool and interesting things in flash, and a lot of my childhood was spent playing flash games. It was a time when free games were made without microtransactions, just for the fun and passion of it.
I know there's lots of replacements, but it's still really a shame to see it go.

There is a huge project to save most. I think pretty much all is saved? Even the shittiest ones.>>1069740
Phone killed it.>>1069749
Neopets is still alive andw ell but I ain't touching that. The new site layout looks ATROCIOUS.>>1069758>>1069763
I guess this is more of a part of my life 'dying off' and, unlike everything else, it cannot be checked back.
Same with Hello Kitty Online... It died and it cannot be brought back.

You can still download flash 10 as a computer-side program, and you can download flash .swf files and run them from it until the end of time. So you can still keep an archive of old games. I can help you with that if you want.

I went and looked, the archive I found didn't seem to have as much as it should. Newgrounds has an install-able flash player to continue to use the games on the site.
Haven't tested it though.

what will happen to poor neopets now that flash is gone? is it going to just go away forever?

Neopets is doing just fine, but several of its features and contents are gonna miss. Fans have achieved most of the plots, animations, neogreetings, and even the games.
Several game contents will be retired, most likely, like the game trophies, unless they actually worked on versions... Which I doubt. I tried the beta mobile Ice Cream Machine one and it FUCKING SUCKS.>>1069889
There's another I think, of over 50K games and animations? >>1069868
Nope. I think I might need to make my own.>>1069826
Good, so they aren't just poof.

well... it IS still alive, but is it still well? i feel like the neopets doomsday clock is closer to midnight than it's ever been! without it's flash games.... well, they're going to need a plot or something soon or else i fear the worse!
>>1069731>>1069740>I wish I knew why flash was deemed obsolete, though>because newer tools for making web applications that can run on a browser alone
Well, that's one thing, yes. But the thing about Flash is it's a product of its time, and that time is way close to forever ago, in internet years. There was nothing like it when the first iteration of Flash was created, which means that while the advantages it brought were revolutionary, it's saddled with a lot of baggage. Flash is reportedly extremely buggy, and it's insecure to the point of potentially being a vector for your computer being completely taken over by malicious web software your browser would download and run as just a matter of viewing a page. Maintaining the ~25 years of accumulated spaghetti to even keep it working at all sounds pretty nightmarish already, and then plugging holes on top of that...? There would need to be serious money in doing it, which there simply isn't when there's now better, newer solutions available to potential clients which don't have that legacy. Solutions that aren't closed source nonsense belonging to some random company that may or may not decide to do whateverthehell with it at any moment, including just straight-up dropping the support.
Makes sense to finally drop it, really. The only reason to mourn it is the loss of backwards compatibility. The library of flash creations is massive, and while newer things should simply NOT be made in flash, it's sad to see the older stuff go.

Here you go. This is a guide for how to run flash locally. The flash client is easy to get, the tricky part would be getting your hands on the .swf files. You just drag and drop the .swf files into the flash.exe and they'll run. I can help you with grabbing up the .swf files too, if needed.
Thanks for that! I am gonna try it. I think most of my improtant things got saved tho.>>1070172
Why does yourMew look so female.
