Hey everyone! It's day umpteen of quarantine for me, and i've been going alright for me. Although one thing that has been both a blessing and a curse is everyone has been posting art, memes, and general experiences from their time playing Animal Crossing New Horizons!

It's a blessing because the characters are cute, the art has been fun, and all my friends have been having a wonderful time!

But it's a curse because despite my effort in trying to enjoy the actual game, i just simply can't.

I want to, i really want to! but i can't help but find it boring with no real goal beyond doing daily chores, which just doesn't appeal to me ://

So this got me thinking, have you ever been in a similar situation as i am? Have you ever been unable to enjoy or understand something that everyone else seems to love?

remember to respect eachothers opinions in here, perhaps this could be a great way to learn and understand eachother ^^

 No.1026085

I don't see the appeal in it or similar games either.

i'm glad that i'm not the only one who thinks that T_T

>hugs and kajis <3

i've just never been into life sim games. i couldn't get into Harvest Moon. I couldn't enjoy Minecraft. and I couldn't enjoy Stardew Valley.

life sim games are just not fun to me. and part of me is a bit upset because everyone treats them like crack, and i can't enjoy that crack with them :PP

that is definitely a part of it. cause the idea of all your friends playing a game everyone loves and can talk about is a feeling i do enjoy

another part of it is that aesthetically and character wise, i love the animal crossing universe! like take those characters and put them in any other type of media like a show, manga, or game, and i probably would enjoy it quite a bit!

I think the character model look too much like dolls. Their kind of uncanny in my opinion. Specially the ones with makeup. They look vaudeville.

i suppose i can understand that, it might not be a type of design that appeals to everyone. i personally love their designs myself, but to each their own ^^

as for games i like? i love all sorts of games

night in the woods, understale, deltarune, dark souls, sekiro, pokemon, persona 5, most sonic games, legend of zelda series, final fantasy games, xenoblade chronicles, half life, portal, the stanley parable, resident evil games, ect. ect.

i could probably go on, but i love all types of games myself

in fact, recently i just played this older indie title from 2013 called "Anodyne" which used Link to the Past style gameplay, but had a weird and eerie, but oddly warm story that i just loved <3

how about you?

For me, one of those things is the Final Fantasy series. I tried to get into it, I really did; starting with FF7, the “entry” game for any newcomer. But I just got bogged down in the grinding and apparent min-maxing and stopped at the Golden Saucer.

Tifa better than Aeris because of boobs, sorry Moony.

Smash Brothers.

I just... can't. Maybe it's because I didn't grow up with it, it don't have any way to play it on my own, but HOLY SHIT, it just enrages me. I don't get throwing the controller mad, but I've definitely walked off a few times. One on one matches I do much better with.

Just a rip off brand that's (ha) at the dollar store! It's good though.

Maximum Ride is a young adult novel, yea. Basic synopsis is a group of kids were stolen from their parents when they were babies and had experiments done on them, and they all got cool bird wings. But the author was actually pretty cool and did it -somewhat- realistically, giving them more hollow bones and modified inner organs so they could actually handle high altitudes and be able to fly.

when i was young, i couldn't drink it without milk and sugar. but i still enjoyed the flavor and kept doing it. but in time, i tended to steer towards the straight black coffee. i still enjoy the more sugary drinks like frappes and lattes, but most of the time i drink dark roasts black.

and in hindsight, coffee is actually beneficial for people with ADHD, so i incidentally medicated myself without knowing it XDD

Most apt example I know is The Hunger Games, in the sense that it is one of those movies I got to see and I absolutely hated watching it. But apparently even the Nostalgia Critic called it a clever movie.

Maybe I wanted to see more Battle Royal or Belkov Experiment: a bunch of kids round up and forced to kill eachother. everybody fighting for their own survival or holding shaky paranoid cooperation, because that keeps you alive better.

Instead, it is about this good kid, Katniss and the few friends she makes fighting against the utter group of douchebag kids.
I didn't feel like I was supposed to feel bad when some of the bad kids died, but there was so much emotional reaction to a 'good' kid dieing.

Most (almost all) of the movie didn't sit well with me.

Also, buttsex obviously. Girls poop from there.

Yyyeah, no. Nothing particularly clever about the first Hunger Games film.

The closest they get to being clever is the second film, which treats the Winners like celebrities and yet STILL essentially show that they are little more than court jesters for the true elite. That was interesting.

Then part 3 is juts all dialogue and buildup to part 4  which was... Practically nonsense.

They're fine I suppose, but yeah, I don't really see how they became as big as they did.

So that certainly doesn't do it for me, unlike about what seems anybody else that's on the internet and below 35.

-Everybody seems to like their smart phones and it has risen to the standard phone. I don't need none, and see no point for daily life. Still probably getting one sooner or later for the standard thing.

I've only got to see season one, but if I had to take a guess, probably because it's like a good classic tale of the under dog hero, mixed in with some great comedy moments and pretty cool character designs/power ideas.

This is what attracted me anyway and made that first seaon really enjoyable to watch.

Oh, and then you there was a cool fighting game that came out of it as well, which kind of further cemented it in my mind of 'cool shit'.

I definitely feel that. intertextuality is starting to really choke out anime. It certainly feels a lot harder to find something genuine among the genra-chasers and half-parodies. Though sometimes you get clever deconstructions of troupes that can inspire new things, so at least there's a flip-side to the coin.

>>1026420

I'd like that, moony. The difficult part is i feel you'd either really like or really hate the things i enjoy. I'd want to get a better sense of what you like and don't like before i would feel like i could assist you in that regard, otherwise i might end up recommending you things you'd really hate. What kind of shows besides mlp have really spoken to you? Is it just soft comfortable things? Or do you enjoy sad things as well? I find the things i enjoy most are very genuine and sincere shows where the characters face a lot of hardship, and it's really sad and painful at times, but they overcome their challenges, grow, and come out with a well-earned happy ending that means that much more because you know so much more about them and because they've come so far. There are lots of other things i enjoy, of course, but i think stories like that are the ones that really linger in my heart and inspire me.

>The biggest thing is probably that I generally enjoy existential and tragic stories which don't really lend themselves well to the art

I don't know, I've seen some anime handle existentialism and tragedy. Madoka Magica comes to mind. I do think that anime of late has shifted away from artsy stories though and more towards entertainment and wish-fulfillment. I definitely agree that i'd like to see less teenagers and less high schools. To call it stale would be a serious understatement. Problem is that there's a huge audience these days for regular rations of wish-fulfillment and escapism. I think back in the 90s, 90s kids were well primed to appreciate strange and esoteric things, and so when we found the cowboy bebops and evangelions of the world, we were eager and willing to see just where it was going, and willing to invest in it because there wasn't as much anime.

I think zoomers have very different values. I think zoomers value conformity much more than individuality. They like popular things. They want to feel like they're part of the in-group. So they all consume the same things, and popularity begets popularity, and so we get a lot of things that feel very samey. A millennial would see something weird and be inspired to dig deep and see what it had to offer. A zoomer would see something weird, get offended before giving it a fair shake, then get all their friends together to try to get it canceled and harass the creators. /oldmanrant

>>1026429
I kindof feel this. To me, i think a lot of sandboxes are made without purpose. Just throw enough stuff around and hope the player can enjoy themselves. A lot of my friends enjoy GTA this way, but it just bores me a ton. If it's something like planet explorers or subnautica, where there is a purpose, but you can put that to the side and just explore and build, and that will be fulfilling in it's own right, then i can enjoy it, and if the game is much more focused and demanding, like dark souls, then i can enjoy that, but i think a lot of sandbox games fall into an awkward middle place where none of the main stories are focused enough to be satisfying, but the game is still too rigid to enjoy the freedom that theoretically gives you. You can't really make your own goals because the game is too limited and restricted, but the game-provided goals suck too! So it's a no-win!

Minecraft piqued my imagination a bit more than GTA. There's this question in archaeology of cultural origins, whether they are diffused by some shared facet of human behavior, or developed strictly in response to survival demands, or whether cultures develop in isolation (sui generis) as part of a process of biopower becoming "embedded" in the environment with which it has made contact. Minecraft struck me as an "interpretation" of the latter kind, where everything in the environment is a discreet element with special properties which help to specify it--there is no "muddle". In turn these "typified" elements fuel the process of creating images. There's something peculiarly "id" about its atmosphere.

that's a lot more thought than i put into minecraft, that's for sure. and i can certainly see that, given the survival and crafting inherit in the games basic structure

survival games are typically a bit too grindy for me, and the emphasis on crafting and just suriving better  over a period of time really didn't click with me. like, it gives me such a tiny loop of a goal which is "just survive" and i feel like i succeeded that by digging a 3 foot hole and sleeping in it.

i dunno, i guess i need a bonafide goal, something greater than my own to push me into doing something, cause otherwise i feel like i'm wasting my time

Originally I think it was a style which sought to emphasize interaction with an environment over linear progression. You could beat up an old woman with a baseball bat, steal her money, then go put a spoiler on your muscle car. The player had a new degree of license to go "off-script", and it resonated with a world where old power structures were beginning to be undermined by new structures of information and communication (e.g. Napster).

>i think a lot of sandbox games fall into an awkward middle place where none of the main stories are focused enough to be satisfying, but the game is still too rigid to enjoy the freedom that theoretically gives you.
Aesthetically it is similar to a certain sort of writing style one encounters in the world of books where the author attempts to "honey" the reader. The art of storytelling lies in getting the reader to want to know what happens next, and one sees in response a repertoire of mannerisms among a certain level of professional writers which seems to shout, "You're really going to want to know what happens next!" I feel it is often the same with games which attempt to be "super" games.

>>1026433
>it gives me such a tiny loop of a goal which is "just survive" and i feel like i succeeded that by digging a 3 foot hole and sleeping in it.
That is my whole point, that it gives an entirely different picture to the confrontation of sensitivity with the ecological process than "just survival". I built an observatory, for instance, to monitor the sun and moon rotating the planet in even succession.

Yea, i can see why that kind of catharsis was meaningful and productive at it's time, kindof like the simpsons or rock music. When the leave-it-to-beaver nuclear family era of values was only just starting to be examined critically. I think this leaves us with a few problems right now:

a) they've done their job, the nuclear family exists, sure, and there are people that hold onto those values, but the dominance that the nuclear-family value system held on america has long since become one of many competing ideologies. It's long been dethroned, and it's criticism has been well-documented and taken to heart. With the job that these pieces set out to accomplish being done, they're left without much of a purpose, and feel, to me, to exist more as a historical footnote about how our culture moved forward, not as anything really contemporarily relevant.

b) These products have since become mainstream culture. This leaves them in a very awkward and paradoxical place, and i think it speaks to a broader conundrum of where we sit culturally, where mainstream culture is built on tearing down mainstream culture, so it ends up making a half-hearted show of tearing down other mainstream things while maintaining a rigid status-quo. It's meaningless and hypocritical at it's heart. It's a tool that exists despite the job being done.

>Aesthetically it is similar to a certain sort of writing style one encounters in the world of books where the author attempts to "honey" the reader. There's certainly an art in getting the reader invested. (i say reader loosely, consumer of media would be a more complete way of saying it, but anyway...) Some of the games/shows that have gripped me most had some elements of mystery too them, and even after consuming many times, i'd pick up a detail i missed that added a little more context to everything, painted things in a slightly different light, and even on first viewing made me want to know more. That being said, those are generally in much more rigid media, like anime or vn, and games are a very different beast. I feel like the best games are ones that can make your decisions a part of the game, where they can anticipate what you do and change accordingly, or somehow acknowledge that in some way. These days though, i feel like that's almost a moot point, because nothing ever gets resolved these days. A good ending squanders the possibility of a future sequel after all...

Azumanga has barely any romance at all. It's mostly a funny quirky little slice of life that follows a shy over-achieving 10-year-old genius who gets transferred to high school, with a healthy dose of absurdity here and there. It's a fossil at this point, but it's still very cute and heartwarming. We could even watch together sometime if you'd like.

Hmm, i wonder if you would like midori days... It's very cute and funny, but also a bit sad in places. The ending is very bittersweet, but it's a romance. I guess i'd want to dig in more to what kinds or how much romance integration in the story would be scary for you, so i can get a proper sense of what you like or don't like, but i get if you don't want to do that here. You have my discord if you want to get more into it. I'll try to curb my enthusiasm for strange, sad, painful, atypical romance as best i can, i promise.

GTA was colored by 90's "angst" but I was really pointing to the underlying imperative of exploration as the key ingredient (of which "being bad" was the expression). It is relevant in the sense that it has become part of the player's expectation for a game to be a "total experience" incorporating important themes and communicating something about the actual world in which the player is a part. We even have a cosmological hypothesis based on the notion of "simulation", which is the only creationist viewpoint with currency in orthodox intellectual circles. These things can be traced back to the incipience and success of sandbox gaming, which was the parent of the MMO, for example.

Oh, to be specific to the purposes of thread, when it comes to anime...

'K-On' seemed like it'd be right up my alley. It has music. It has comedy. It has cute characters trying to make it in life. It has the absence of a lot of the objectionable material that's found in a lot of other animes. What's no to love?

But, ultimately, despite going through the initial episodes, I found it all lacking. I'm afraid that 'cutie pies being quirky but having fun' really doesn't gel for my personal tastes much.

Which is odd, really, since I get super-into all sorts of camp material that's kitsch and sickly sweet otherwise, but... nah, K-On just didn't do it for me.

Any fans of the series here? (Paradoxically, I might really like the soundtrack since upbeat pop rock / power pop is really my jam.)

High school shows mainly come to mind because you seem to like fun slice of life shows, and as far as i know those tend to mostly take place in high school, as many anime do.

It also seems the shows you have cited as ones you've liked have been more episodic than serial, is it fair to say you prefer episodic shows to serial ones?

So. So far we've got

<romance: Dislike, but tolerable in small doses
<slice of life: Like
<cute and fun: like
<episodeic/serial: episodic preferred

Would you say this is a fair appraisal of your preferences overall?

Do you like action, moony? Like mech or shonen?

Cool thanks! Well I did the "bro route" and Emi until her personal stuff started ensuing.

I absolutely dig it, but I get what you mean, I like other CGDCT shows better too.
Maybe age has something to do with it? K-ON seems to be the first popular one that brought certain qualities together, but hadn't fleshed out the whole thing/respective details?

I also had the funny experience that I like battle shonen adventure and hiphop, but couldn't get into Samurai Champloo back then.
Still waiting for a show to pick up and perfect that combination.

Sometimes, I feel like I 'should' enjoy something in terms of elements, but I dislike the actual framing of events in terms of editing and pacing a bit. That drags it down from 'okay' to 'me'. K-On, at least early on, seems to suffer from this. I agree with your idea that maybe there's a 'frontrunner curse' that means that material doesn't gel as well when compared to later material.

You know what? I'll say it.

I 'like' Daniel Craig's James Bond, but I don't 'love it', and I feel like he's honestly maybe dead last as far as the quality of official movie Bond actors in my opinion.

Casino Royale? Meh. 2.5/5

Quantum of Solace? Hot garbage. 1.5/5

Skyfall? Pleasant and enjoyable, but far from perfect. 4/5

Spectre? Also hot garbage. 1.5/5

Timothy Dalton was a better Bond. Yes, I said it. He was. He actually pulled off the 'Bond is an utter sociopath with a thin veneer of class that often cracks' trope-y take, while Craig's performances are uneven as hell from film to film.

I'm quite sure I've seen all of them and don't remember the plot of any of them. They're all forgettable/5 for me.

As far as plots go, I recall offhand:

Casino Royale? Terrorist money guy plays a high stakes game that Bond needs to make sure that he loses at. Premise is frankly kind of lame. Yes, I'm aware that it goes back to an original story from Fleming. Still lame.

Quantum of Solace? American corporations in connection with international financiers are trying to steal the water resources in Latin America. Apparently based on real life trade practices. It's interesting, but... this is so NOT Bond. This is what I'd expect to see a documentary voiced by George Clooney about.

Skyfall? Bond faces Hispanic Bond. That's kind of it. And that's honestly rather brilliant. Bond having a near exact mirror image to tango with, Bond w/limits versus Bond w/o limits then... pretty alright.

Spectre? Apparently Dr. Evil is back. Blofeld, I mean. He's an evil European aristocratic dude who wants to take over the world... somehow... eh, this has been parodied to death, and everything is just... lame. There's no high concepts involved. It's Bond versus a bunch of jerks, essentially.

The very first route you did is the one where you get wasted and die? Big oof! Emi's route is great! She and hanako are my favorites.
