Well I could liken you to a werewolf
The way you left me for dead
But then again I provided a full moon
Or I could liken you to a shark
The way you bit off my head
But then again, I was waving around a bleeding open wound

But you are such a super guy
Til the second you get a whiff of me
And we are like a wishing well
and a bolt of electricity
We can still support each other
Long as we avoid each other
Nothing wrong when
A song ends
In a minor key

The lava from a volcano
Shot up from the bottom of the sea
One thing leads to another
And you make an island out of me

And I could liken you to a chemical
The way you made me compound a compound
But I'm a chemical too
Inevitable you and me would mix
And I could liken you to a lot of things
But I always come around
Cause in the end
Im a sensible girl
I know the fiction of the fix

But you are such a super guy
Til the second you get a whiff of me
And we are like a wishing well
and a bolt of electricity
We can still support each other
Long as we avoid each other
Nothing wrong when
A song ends
In a minor key

Nothing wrong when
A song ends
In a minor key

Nothing wrong when
A song ends
In a minor key

You can't always get what you want...
You can't always get what you want...
You can't always get what you want...

But if you try sometimes, you just might find... you get what you need.

It's by the Rolling Stones, the song is called "You Can't Always Get What You Want."

This is my song for the worst possible days. For those 3 AM commutes to the court, or those 11 PM commutes home.

For those times when you got yelled at by ten different people, and don't even have the power to do anything to not be yelled at by the next inevitable ten yelling people.

...you can't always get what you want. but sometimes, you get what you need. just hang in there. you can't always get what you want.

He felt her curves surrounding his neck
Like a yoke
He knows
He'll never forget
The way she cut through his bed
Like a snake would bite through a cave of flesh
But he holds her
Though she's broken
He swears he don't care where she's been
He's tired of being human
He wears her close to the bone as though she were his own skin
He shoots from the heart instead of the head
His mouth and his words they rarely connect
He looks to the past and where his tongue's tread
And he knows he meant the opposite
But she holds him
Like an infant
Though it breaks her in half to know he'll wake like a man
Sold on cold indifference
When he reaches for her she's gone
She slips like the wind through blackened sails, but
Who are we to love at all?
Who are we to love at all?
Who are we to love at all?
Who are we to love at all?
And I hope you don't mind
If I hang all of my hopes
I hang all my hopes on this time
Although I've been warned
I'll probably get burned
I'd rather get burned than to not try
I hope you don't mind
If I hang all of my hopes
I hang all of my hopes on this time
'Cause you won't
Let it go
Who are we to love at all?
Let it go
Let it go
Who are we to love at all?
Let it go
Let it go
Let it go
Let it go
Who are we to love at all?
Let it go
Let it go
Let it go
Let it go

No Surprises is, maybe, my favorite song. It speaks to me. All the lyrics speak to me. but i don't listen to it. Only on days when i cannot resist listening to it, will i listen to it.

Such a pretty house...
and such a pretty garden...

No alarms and no surprises...
No alarms and no surprises...
No alarms and no surprises...

Svetlana sucks lemons across from me
And I am progressing abominably
And I do not know my own way to the sea
But the saltiest sea knows its own way to me

And the city that turns, turns protracted and slow
And I find myself toeing th'Embarcadero
And I find myself knowing
The things that I knew
Which is all that you can know
On this side of the blue

And Jaime has eyes
Black and shiny as boots
And they march at you two-by-two
(re-loo re-loo);
When she looks at you
You know she's nowhere near through:
It's the kindest heart beating
This side of the blue

And the signifieds butt heads
With the signifiers
And we all fall down slack-jawed
To marvel at words!
When across the sky sheet the
Impossible birds, in a steady
Illiterate movement homewards

And Gabriel stands beneath forest and moon
See them rattle & boo
See them shake, and see them loom
See him fashion a cap from a page of Camus;
And see him navigate deftly this side of the blue

And the rest of our lives
Will the moments accrue
When the shape of their goneness
Will flare up anew
Then we do what we have to do
(re-loo re-loo)
Which is all that you can do
On this side of the blue
Oh, it's all that you can do
On this side of the blue

As another example, take the mid 90s hit "Summer Girls".

New Kids On The Block had a bunch of hits
Chinese food makes me sick
And I think it's fly when girls stop by
For the summer, for the summer
I like girls that wear Abercrombie and Fitch
I'd take her if I had one wish
But she's been gone since that summer, since that summer

Does he simply miss a past summer love?

Hip hop, marmalade, spick-and-span
Met you one summer and it all began
You're the best girl that I ever did see
The great Larry Bird, Jersey 33
When you take a sip, you buzz like a hornet
Billy Shakespeare wrote a whole bunch of sonnets
Call me Willy Whistle 'cause I can't speak, baby
Somethin' in your eyes really drove me crazy
Now I can't forget you and it makes me mad
Left one day and never came back
Stayed all summer, then went back home
Macaulay Culkin was in Home Alone
Fell deep in love, but now we ain't speakin'
Michael J. Fox was Alex P. Keaton
When I met you, I said my name is Rich
You look like a girl from Abercrombie & Fitch

Here we mentions William Shakespeare of all things, very interesting.

Cherry Pez, Coke Crush, Rock Stud, Boogie
Used to hate school, so I had to play hookie
Always been hip to the B-boy style
Known to act wild and make a girl smile
Love New Edition and the Candy Girl
Reminds me of you 'cause you rock my world
You come from Georgia, where the peaches grow
They drink lemonade and speak real slow
You love hip hop and rock and roll
Dad took off when you were four years old
There was a good man named Paul Revere
I feel much better, baby, when you're near
You love Fun Dip and Cherry Coke
I like the way you laugh when I tell a joke
When I met you, I said my name was Rich
You looked like a girl from Abercrombie & Fitch

In this verse he not only mentions the troubled family life of his lost love, but also Paul Revere for some reason.  How does that fit in?

In the summertime, girls got it goin' on
Shake and wiggle to a hip hop song
Summertime girls are the kind I like
I'll steal your honey, like I stole your bike
Boogaloo Shrimp and pogo sticks
My mind takes me back there oh so quick
Let you off the hook, like my man Mr. Limpet
Think about that summer and I bug 'cause I miss it
I like The Color Purple, macaroni and cheese
Ruby red slippers and a bunch of trees
Call you up, but what's the use?
I like Kevin Bacon, but I hate Footloose
Came in the door, I said it before
I think I'm over you, but I'm really not sure
When I met you, I said my name was Rich
You looked like a girl From Abercrombie & Fitch

This one has multiple references to movies, not uncommon for the song, but none of them seem to relate directly so a specific summer.  Is this sad love story ("I think I'm over you, but I'm really not sure") something that spans more than a decade?  Perhaps it's not a love story at all, and that's merely a cover for its true meaning.

Very mysterious.

Debout, les damnés de la terre
Debout, les forçats de la faim
La raison tonne en son cratère
C'est l'éruption de la fin
Du passé faisons table rase
Foule esclave, debout, debout
Le monde va changer de base
Nous ne sommes rien, soyons tout

C'est la lutte finale
Groupons-nous, et demain

no, and i am not sure i own anything from there, though it was... popular in high school amongst a certain crowd, we shall say

...the thing is, i am from such an... elitist area, let us say, that the truly snobby wall-street kids or ceo children or famous rapper/musician types would look down on the Ambercrombie crowd as being "lower-middle-class wannabes" in a way.

Not that... those kids were ever popular though. It was a weird dynamic.

i was privileged in a way, as i have always been a bit of a social chameleon.  i am grateful that everyone welcomed me. i am good at listening to problems.

Sicking lemons could be a reference to the face a person is making. Supposedly "Svetlana" was one of Joanna Newsom's music teacher and it's suggested the verse is referencing the song's odd chord progression

It's one of my all time favorite songs, and yeah the lyrics are melancholy which makes sense because a lot of my life has been melancholy. I don't love easily, and love doesn't come to me easily. But I don't think there's anything to read deeply into, I personally just connect really well to these kinds of songs. They make you feel, strongly, and I don't think everything has to make you feel happy. Other emotions are good too sometimes.

Have a listen, it's a beautiful song, in a haunting way.

Judy wrote the saddest song
She showed it to a boy in school today
Judy, where did you go wrong
You used to make me smile when I was down
Judy was a teenage rebel
She did it with a boy when she was young
She gave herself to books and learning
She gave herself to being number one
Judy, I don't know you if you're gonna show me everything
Judy, I don't know you if you're gonna show me everything

[Verse 2]
Judy got a book at school
She went under the covers with her torch
She fell asleep till it was morning
She dreamt about the girl who stole a horse
Judy never felt so good except when she was sleeping
Judy never felt so good except when she was sleeping

[Chorus]
Judy, let's go for a walk
We can kiss and do whatever you want
But you will be disappointed
You will fall asleep with ants in your pants
Judy, you're just trying to find and keep the dream of horses
And the song she wrote was Judy and the Dream of Horses
Dream of Horses
You dream of horses

[Bridge]
The best looking boys are taken
The best looking girls are staying inside
So Judy, where does that leave you
Walking the street from morning to night
With a star upon your shoulder lighting up the path that you walk
With a parrot on your shoulder, saying everything when you talk
If you're ever feeling blue
Then write another song about your dream of horses
Write a song about your dream of horses
Call it Judy and the Dream of Horses
Call it Judy and the Dream of Horses
Your dream of horses
Your dream of horses
Your dream of horses
Your dream of horses

Over the years, this has grown to be my favorite song of all time, it's kind of a delicate love song that gradually builds up to a rather heart warming crescendo at the end

This is the song "Human" by Rag'n'Bone Man

Some people got the real problems

i'm only human after all
Don't put the blame on me

I dug a hole and filled it with compost.
Rested on the cool grass for a minute.
I saw the future in a dream last night.
There's nothing in it.

I set the sapling in the hole.
Started gently tamping down the dirt.
I saw the future in a dream last night; somebody's gonna get hurt somebody's gonna get hurt.
I hope it's not me.
But I suspect it's going to have to be.

I dug my heels in for the winter and I waited for the snow.
Something was stuck up in the clouds something was stuck up there.
It couldn't let go.

And when it's time came I could see it happen.
Blossoms black and sweet as Texas crude.
I saw the future flowering like a ruptured vessel. Somebody's gonna get screwed.

It won't be me.

Some day I am going to walk out of here free.

try on my other favorite beautifully sad Man Man song while you are at it. This is also a song I would say resonates deeply with me, for historical reasons.

She feels like,
A stranger has come in the night,
And stolen her life,
And left her with this.
And boughs break on ebony toothaches;
She's just a flask trapped inside a fall.
I know you need to find what you thought you left behind in a past life;
I won't question why the only light that you have you give away.
I know you need to find what you thought you left behind in a past life;
I won't question why the only light that you have you give away.
She feels like,
A stranger has come in the night,
And stolen her life,
And left her with this.

if i have a complaint about the song, it is that it is a song that seems more about not taking personal responsibility than the theme i personally project upon it, which is don't be so harsh on others, we're all human

It misses the point, by casting the we're all human message into "don't blame me" when i think the better take away is take that same logic and remember it when you look at others.

In other words... It seems selfish. That is why that song is something i like, but not a favorite

Out of this zone, trying to see
I'm so alone, nothing for me
I guess I'll go home, try to be sane
Try to pretend, none of it happened
Oh, this old tree, lonely old me
Whoopsie-daisy, I thought I was happy, oh
Out of this zone, now that I see
I don't need them and they don't need me
I guess I'll go home, try to be sane
Try to pretend, none of it happened
Destined to be, lonely old me
Whoopsie-daisy, I thought I was happy, oh

Ah, why won't they talk to me? (I thought I was happy)
Ah, why won't they talk to me?
Ah, why won't they talk to me?

But I don't really care about it anyway
I wouldn't listen to a word any of them say
They just talk about themselves all day

Verse 1]
We took a vow in summertime
Now we find ourselves in late December
I believe that New Year's Eve
Will be the perfect time for their great surrender
But they don't remember

[Pre-Chorus]
Anger wants a voice, voices wanna sing
Singers harmonize 'til they can't hear anything
I thought that I was free from all that questionin'
But every time a problem ends, another one begins

[Chorus]
And the stone walls of Harmony Hall bear witness
Anybody with a worried mind could never forgive the sight
Of wicked snakes inside a place you thought was dignified
I don't wanna live like this, but I don't wanna die

[Post-Chorus]
Ooh, ooh, ooh
I don't wanna live like this, but I don't wanna die

[Verse 2]
Within the halls of power lies a nervous heart that beats
Like a Young Pretender's
Beneath these velvet gloves I hide
The shameful, crooked hands of a moneylender
'Cause I still remember

[Pre-Chorus]
Anger wants a voice, voices wanna sing
Singers harmonize 'til they can't hear anything
I thought that I was free from all that questionin'
But every time a problem ends, another one begins

[Chorus]
And the stone walls of Harmony Hall bear witness
Anybody with a worried mind could never forgive the sight
Of wicked snakes inside a place you thought was dignified
I don't wanna live like this, but I don't wanna die

I was dressed for success
But success it never comes
And I'm the only one who laughs
At your jokes when they are so bad
And your jokes are always bad
But they're not as bad as this
Come join us in a prayer
We'll be waiting, waiting where
Everything's ending here

[Chorus 1]
And all the sterile striking it defends an empty dock you cast away
And rain upon your forehead where the mist's for hire if it's
Just too clear
Let's spend our last quarter stance randomly
Go down to the outlet once again

[Verse 2/PreChorus]
Painted portraits of minions and slaves
Crotch-mavens and one-night plays
And they the only ones who laugh
At the jokes when they are so bad
And the jokes they're always bad
But they're not as bad as this
Come join us in a prayer
We'll be waiting, waiting where
Everything's ending here

[Chorus 2]
And all the Spanish candles they sold away have gone to this
And a run-on piece of mountain travels, shivers, runs, down the freeway
I guess she spent her last quarter randomly
We guess a guess is the best I'll do, I'll do
Last time, last time is the best time I spent

I'm gonna do that thing where I translate a danish one. Just cause I listened to this recently and it stuck with me a bit so it's the main one I wanna post at the mo.

It's called "Tobacco Road" and is from the singer CV Jørgensens breakthrough and still most acclaimed album, "The Big City's Little Oases".

This isn't me bing all "all smoking is evil" or anything, btw,  I just really like how this song is written.

It's late now and you're headed or bed
Through the smoke coming from your cigarette
That came all the way here from the US of A
Just to make you so damntired
That damn cigarette
Made oh you oh so damn tired

Where there's life, there is Long
The ads even claimed it's refreshing
But after having had 40 of them
You're not qutie sure about that anymor
The girl in th ad is noding
They must pay her pretty wel (what went wrong?)
No matter how much they paid her
You're still so incrdibly tired
It's incredible to you that they dare call this product a cigarette
That they dare call it a cigarette

Never before in my life have I seen
Is much nicotine and tar
As when they showed me an X-ray scan
Of my lungs and said "we're terribly sorry"
It was almost unbearable
And yt, all the same, you did it all on your own
The last inhalations of the day
Slowly seep out of my lungs
Leaving a sharp and bitter taste in my mouth
And makes my head feel so much heavier

As someone sets light to the first fire of autumn
We settle down to cut ourselves apart
Cough and twitch from the news on your face
And some foreign candle burning in your eyes

Held to the past, too aware of the pending
Chill as the dawn breaks and finds us up for sale
Enter the fog another low road descending
Away from the cold lust, your house and summertime

Blind to the last cursed affair, pistols and countless eyes
A trail of white blood betrays the reckless route your craft is running
Feet to the sun turns into wood, dousing an ancient torch
Loiter the whole day through and lose yourself in lines dissecting love

Your name on my cast and my notes on your stay
Offer me little but doting on a crime
We've turned every stone and for all our invention
In matters of love lost, we've no recourse at all

Blind to the last cursed affair, pistols and countless eyes
A trail of white blood betrays the reckless route your craft is running
Feet to the sun turns into wood, dousing an ancient torch
Loiter the whole day through, and lose yourself in lines dissecting
Lose yourself in lines dissecting

In the summer that you came
There was something eating everyone
And the sunshine fund was low
We couldn't greet you with a simple hello
And the watchers of the flood
Were busy in their chambers
Making sure there was new blood
To sustain their dying veins

[Chorus]
But I believed you
No need for further questioning
I-I'm gonna leave with you
You can teach me all you know
Which way will we go now
On our trip to taller windows?
I really don't know now
I really don't know

[Verse 2]
In the winter that you left
There was business as usual
With the same old fears and frustrations
But the word got out, it was really such a pity
But the judges and the saints
And the textbook committee
Decided you should be left out
Not even mentioned

[Chorus]
But I believed you
No need for further questioning
I-I'm gonna leave with you
You can teach me all you know
Which way will we go now
On our trip to taller windows?

[Verse 1]
Blind date with the chancer
We had oysters and dry lancers
And the check when it arrived we went dutch, dutch, dutch, dutch
A redder shade of neck on a whiter shade of trash
And this emory board is giving me a rash
I'm flat out
You're so beautiful to look at when you cry
Freeze, don't move
You've been chosen as an extra in the movie adaptation of the sequel to your life

[Chorus]
A shady lane, everybody wants one
A shady lane, everybody needs one
Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god
Oh my god, oh your god, oh his god, oh her god
It's everybody's god, it's everybody's god, it's everybody's god, it's everybody's god
The worlds collide, but all that we want is a shady lane

[Verse 2]
Glance, don't stare
Soon you're being told to recognize your heirs
No, not me
I'm an island of such great complexity
Stress surrounds in the muddy peaceful center of this town
Tell me off in the hotel lobby right in front of all the bellboys and the over-friendly concierge

[Chorus]
[Chorus]
A shady lane, everybody wants one
A shady lane, everybody needs one
Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, oh my god
Oh my god, oh your god, oh his god, oh her god

Look at the kid from school
He's teaching mamas and papas how to be a little cool
He's changing fashion, the way he dress
The tracksuits are old, and the hoody's way too moody
For a kid with the will to funk
He dances in secret; he's a part-time punk

She's getting off the plane
She wants to write a thesis on the population underprivileged
The kids fighting up the lane
Shop lifting, just drifting
Like The Switchblade And The Cross
But if there's trouble she's got the moves
She's taking an elementary class in Kung fu

I left my washing in the launderette
You can put some money on it, you can place a little bet
That when I see my washing
The black will be grey and the white will be grey
But the blues are still blue

I'm crying out for my mum
If the malady don't go away we're in a little trouble
With the boss of the company
I'm a singer, a swinger I'm a layabout but laying on
The dock in the lazy sun
Will never quite relegate me to a bum

I left my lady in the launderette
You can put some money on it, you can place a little bet
That when I see my lady
The black will be white and the white will be black
But The Blues Are Still Blue

Baby, I love your face
I've been creeping round this town because?
Well, creeping's just my way
But with a little wink I'll be there
I'll be excited for a week, but then excitement starts to fade
I know your young, but you're out of touch
You're French, your vocabulary's not quite formed

I left my homework in the launderette
I got a letter from my mamma which my stupid dog has ate
I hid behind the fence
Here comes the deputy head with the bark of a bulldog
He's not making much sense

I left my lady in the launderette
You can put some money on it, you can place a little bet
That when I see my lady
The black will be white and the white will be black
But the blues are still blue?

No soy fácil no, no estoy dócil no
no estoy cordial ni sensato, no tengo ninguna razón para estarlo
No estoy calmo no, no estoy sobrio no

No soy fácil no, no estoy dócil no
no estoy cordial ni sensato, no tengo ninguna razón para estarlo
No estoy calmo no, no estoy sobrio no

No soy fácil no, no estoy dócil no
no estoy cordial ni sensato, no tengo ninguna razón para estarlo
No estoy calmo no, no estoy sobrio no

No soy fácil no, no soy dócil no
no estoy cordial ni sensato, no tengo ninguna razón para estarlo
No estoy calmo no, no estoy sobrio no
no estoy alegre ni claro, no tengo ninguna razón para estarlo

Do not get me started on that! Fall out boy's early albums are fantastic, and the newer ones are just so hollow if you ask me. New FOB is just chanting and cheap mass appeal. Old fallout boy is esoteric and clearly being drawn from a real place.

I haven't run the numbers, but i bet you the lyrical variety is double in fallout boy's early albums. It's coming from an actual rebel angst place. New fallout boy is just crowd pleasing.

This ablum is fantastic if you've got the time to sit down and take a listen!

wohow touched a nerve there! i getcha i getcha!

alas, tis an all too common thing. a band becomes a household name, and they find a magical formula to make music that always sells. the pressure from record labels, movie studios, and advertisers will pay out the wazoo. tis sad when it bites a good band

I mean, i can't exactly say i am against their new stuff, but i will agree that their old stuff had much more character and personal experience <3

Their new stuff is fine, but i kind of almost have more of a problem with fine than i do with bad. A lot of the time, bad happens because someone wanted to try something new and different, or are in a learning phase, and they failed. Even though they failed, i respect that they took a risk, they probably learned from the mistake, and a lot of people and bits of culture can probably learn from their failure and all grow and move forward. Basking in mediocrity is the lowest of the low. It's stagnant. It doesn't move anyone forward. It's cowardly and lazy.

you aren't wrong, but if that mediocrity sells and keeps you on top, then i can see why they don't take a risk elsewhere. I mean "risk" is implied that there is a chance for failure, and to threaten your seat on the top can cause anyone to forgo that.

i don't agree with it, and i favor those who make bold decisions and moves (who in my opinion have the attitude for continued success). but i can't exactly bring myself to be mad either, cause i get it

Goddamnit.

I know few of you really care when I do this lyric translation thing, but after posting that one the other day, I just keep listening to the album it was from.

And I found a song on it that I think a lot of people on here can relate to.

It's called "The Subscriber".

Let them just come and cut the line
They're free to cut my connection
I never really got through anyway
Got the wrong number over and over again

You're all alone now, but that's far from how you want things to be
Panically staring at that stupid, silent telephone
You're all alone now, but far too nervous to pick up
After all, you wouldn't want to wake and bother anybody

God knows I did everything in my power
To get my message through to you
All the things I thought and all the things I should have said
Had been carefully written down.

You're all alone now, but that's far from how you want things to be
Panically staring at that stupid, silent telephone
You're all alone now, but far too nervous to pick up
After all, you wouldn't want to wake and bother anybody
We're all deep asleep the biggest isolation of our century

How can so many people do so litle for eachother
And for how long will this last
Your screams for help get lost in
The crashing waves of shyness

You're all alone now, but that's far from how you want things to be
Panically staring at that stupid, silent telephone
You're all alone now, but far too nervous to pick up
After all, you wouldn't want to wake and bother anybody
We're all deep asleep the biggest isolation of our century

Verse 1]
Really don't mind if you sit this one out
My word's but a whisper, your deafness a shout
I may make you feel but I can't make you think
Your sperm's in the gutter, your love's in the sink
So you ride yourselves over the fields
And you make all your animal deals
And your wise men don't know how it feels

[Refrain]
To be thick as a brick

[Verse 2]
And the sand-castle virtues are all swept away
In the tidal destruction, the moral melee
The elastic retreat rings the close of play
As the last wave uncovers the newfangled way
But your new shoes are worn at the heels
And your suntan does rapidly peel
And your wise men don't know how it feels

[Refrain]
To be thick as a brick

[Verse 3]
And the love that I feel
Is so far away
I'm a bad dream
That I just had today
And you shake your head
And say it's a shame

[Verse 4]
Spin me back down the years
And the days of my youth
Draw the lace and black curtains
And shut out the whole truth
Spin me down the long ages
Let them sing the song

[Verse 5]
See there! A son is born
And we pronounce him fit to fight
There are black-heads on his shoulders
And he pees himself in the night
We'll make a man of him
Put him to a trade
Teach him to play Monopoly
And how to sing in the rain

[3:36 - 5:00 - Instrumental]

[2. The Poet and the Painter (5:00 - 10:29)]

[5:00 - 6:09 - Instrumental]

[Verse 6]
The Poet and the Painter
Casting shadows on the water
As the sun plays on the infantry
Returning from the sea
The do-er and the thinker
No allowance for the other
As the failing light illuminates
The mercenary's creed
The home fire burning
The kettle almost boiling
But the master of the house
Is far away
The horses stamping
Their warm breath clouding
In the sharp and frosty morning
Of the day
And the poet lifts his pen
While the soldier sheaths his sword

[Refrain 2]
And the youngest of the family
Is moving with authority
Building castles by the sea
He dares the tardy tide
To wash them all aside, oh

[7:21 - 9:21 - Instrumental]

[Verse 7]
The cattle quietly grazing
At the grass down by the river
Where the swelling mountain water
Moves onward to the sea
The builder of the castles
Renews the age-old purpose
And contemplates the milking girl
Whose offer is his need
The young men of the household
Have all gone into service
And are not to be expected
For a year
The innocent young master
Thoughts moving ever faster
Has formed the plan
To change the man he seems
And the poet sheaths his pen
While the soldier lifts his sword

[Refrain 2]
And the oldest of the family
Is moving with authority
Coming from across the sea
He challenges the son
Who puts him to the run

[3. What Do You Do When the Old Man's Gone? / From the Upper Class (10:29 - 15:54)]

[Verse 8]
What do you do when the old man's gone
Do you want to be him?
And your real self sings the song
Do you want to free him?
No one to help you get up steam
And the whirlpool turns you way off-beam

[11:52 - 13:16 - Instrumental]

[Verse 9]
I've come down from the upper class
To mend your rotten ways
My father was a man-of-power
Whom everyone obeyed

[Verse 10]
So come on all you criminals!
I've got to put you straight
Just like I did with my old man
Twenty years too late

[14:00 - 15:26 - Instrumental]

[Verse 11]
Your bread and water's going cold
Your hair is too short and neat
I'll judge you all and make damn sure
That no-one judges me

[4. You Curl Your Toes in Fun / Childhood Heroes / Stabs Instrumental (15:54 - 22:40)]

[Verse 12]
You curl your toes in fun
As you smile at everyone
You meet the stares, you're unaware
That your doings aren't done
And you laugh most ruthlessly
As you tell us what not to be
But how are we supposed to see
Where we should run?

[Verse 13]
I see you shuffle in the courtroom with
Your rings upon your fingers
And your downy little sidies
And your silver-buckle shoes
Playing at the hard case
You follow the example
Of the comic-paper idol
Who lets you bend the rules

[Verse 14]
So, come on ye childhood heroes!
Won't you rise up from the pages
Of your comic-books, your super crooks
And show us all the way
Well! Make your will and testament
Won't you join your local government?
We'll have Superman for president
Let Robin save the day

[Verse 15]
You put your bet on number one
And it comes up every time
The other kids have all backed down
And they put you first in line
And so you finally ask yourself
Just how big you are
And you take your place in a wiser world
Of bigger motor cars
And you wonder who to call on

[Verse 16]
So! Where the hell was Biggles
When you needed him last Saturday?
And where were all the sportsmen
Who always pulled you though?
They're all resting down in Cornwall
Writing up their memoirs
For a paper-back edition
Of the Boy Scout Manual

[20:23 - 22:40 - Instrumental]

[PART TWO]

[5. See There a Man Is Born / Clear White Circles (22:40 - 28:38)]

[Verse 17]
See there! A man is born
And we pronounce him fit for peace
There's a load lifted from his shoulders
With the discovery of his disease
We'll take a child from him
Put it to the test
Teach it to be a wise man
And how to fool the rest

[24:04 - 26:11 - Instrumental]

[Verse 18: Spoken]
We will be geared to the average, rather than the exceptional
God is an overwhelming responsibility
We walked through the maternity ward
And saw 218 babies wearing nylons
It says here that cats are on the upgrade
Upgrade? Hipgrave
Oh, Mac

[Verse 19]
In the clear white circles of morning wonder
I take my place with the lord of the hills
And the blue-eyed soldiers stand slightly discoloured
In neat little rows sporting canvas frills
With their jock-straps pinching, they slouch to attention
While queuing for sarnies at the office canteen
Saying: "How's your granny?" and good old Ernie
He coughed up a tenner on a premium bond win

[6. Legends and Believe in the Day (28:38 - 35:13)]

[Verse 20]
The legends worded in the ancient tribal hymn
Lie cradled in the seagull's call
And all the promises they made
Are ground beneath the sadist's fall

[Verse 21]
The poet and the wise man stand
Behind the gun, behind the gun
And signal for the crack of dawn
Light the sun, light the sun

[Refrain 3]
Do you believe in the day?
Do you believe in the day?

[Verse 22]
The Dawn Creation of the Kings
Has begun, has begun
Soft Venus, lonely maiden brings
The ageless one, the ageless one

[Refrain 3]
Do you believe in the day?
Do you believe in the day?

[Verse 23]
The fading hero has returned
To the night, to the night
And fully pregnant with the day
Wise men endorse the poet's sight

[Refrain 3]
Do you believe in the day?
Do you believe in the day?

[33:37 - 35:13 - Instrumental]

[7. Tales of Your Life (35:13 - 40:37)]

[Verse 24]
Let me tell you the tales of your life
Of your love and the cut of the knife
The tireless oppression, the wisdom instilled
The desire to kill or be killed
Well, let me sing of the losers who lie
In the street as the last bus goes by
The pavements are empty: the gutters run red
While the fool toasts his god in the sky

[Refrain 4]
So come all ye young men who are building castles!
Kindly state the time of the year
And join your voices in a hellish chorus
Mark the precise nature of your fear

[Verse 25]
Let me help you pick up your dead
As the sins of the father are fed
With the blood of the fools and the thoughts of the wise and
From the pan under your bed
Well, let me make you a present of song
As the wise man breaks wind and is gone
While the fool with the hour-glass is cooking his goose
And the nursery rhyme winds along

[Refrain 4]
So! Come all ye young men who are building castles!
Kindly state the time of the year
And join your voices in a hellish chorus
Mark the precise nature of your fear
See! The summer lightning casts its bolts upon you
And the hour of judgement draweth near
Would you be the fool stood in his suit of armour
Or the wiser man who rushes clear

[8. Childhood Heroes Reprise (40:37 - 43:46)]

[Verse 14 Reprise]
So, come on ye childhood heroes!
Won't you rise up from the pages
Of your comic-books, your super crooks
And show us all the way
Well! Make your will and testament
Won't you join your local government?
We'll have Superman for president
Let Robin save the day

[Verse 16 Reprise]
So! Where the hell was Biggles
When you needed him last Saturday?
And where were all the sportsmen
Who always pulled you though?
They're all resting down in Cornwall
Writing up their memoirs
For a paper-back edition
Of the Boy Scout Manual

[Verse 1 Reprise]
So you ride yourselves over the fields
And you make all your animal deals
And your wise men don't know how it feels

[Refrain]
To be thick as a brick

That's it
I've had it
I hate to be dramatic
but it's time for me to fly the coop.
Terrific! Fine!
I'm drawing the line
before I wind up in a parrot soup.
I was a fool to let you run the show.
I'm cutting you loose pal, look out below.
Arrividerci, c'est la vie.
Hope all goes well
I'm looking out for me.

Okay, I'm little
been playing second fiddle
and I don't get no respect.
I turn the other cheek
but this busted beak
is the only thanks that I get
I never found a friend that I can trust
They promise caviar and leave me eating dust.
That's some reward for loyalty
from here on in
I'm looking out for me.

Oh, I don't need nobody else
I'll never fail,
I'll cover own my tail
I can take care of myself.

You know it just don't pay to give a hoot
I give at all my heart, what do I get? The boot.

I'm done with that I'm flapping free
From here on in,
I'm looking out for me!
