I started a challenge for myself. A little experiment.

What I did was, I marked on my calendar the days that I wrote something, or read something. And that's all it says. "I wrote something/I read something"

What I'm hoping is that, at the end of each month, I can look at that and say to myself "you did something that day" or "look how many days you did something on"

I made a promise to myself that I'm going to ignore the days on which I didn't do anything, because I've had literal years of not doing anything now. So Im not focusing on that.

Maybe this will give me some better inspiration and remind me that, even though life is crazy and busy, I can still do something towards a goal and not just put it on the back burner until I give up on it.

 No.965801

I made something of a breakthrough with one of the fanfics that's been on the backburner forever. I wrote it as if it's happening rather than if it had already happened, not sure what the fancy writing term for that is called, and it just feels so much more natural and flowing now.

oh my goodness. well, I'll spare you the heartache of hoping EoP will be finished then. It was his first ever ponyfic, and it is AMAZING, but he used it as kind of therapy and he never got around to finishing it so he hosted a 5 hour stream where he just sort of read his notes with some friends and summarized the story for us orally, which was still absolutely fantastic and I kinda wish he'd wrote it so I could by physical volumes of it.

But his alias Imploding Colon wrote a really great series called Austraeoh that is still being worked on, granted it's under hiatus atm. That's just my favorites. He also writes like a ton of really great stuff. Geez I wish he wasn't so shy. I just want to wave at his lemur face at Bronycon or something.

Haha, that's awesome. I'll have to check some of it out.

You know, this brings me back to thinking of how I would handle my face being in the spotlight. I've often thought of writing with a ghost name, though with how the internet is, I sometimes wonder if I've already screwed my chances on that by sharing so many of my story ideas with friends online. It wouldn't be that hard for someone to connect the dots and figure it out.

>

Other than that, I finished a short story a little while back, though I wrote it in a couple of stretches and I wasn't quite sure I was in the right mindset when I ended it. I may return to it someday. It could be another story I write and rewrite over and over over the years until I reach that never obtainable point of perfection.

Other than that, I've been playing with writing fluff for a homebrew 40k forge world and its Mechanicus inhabitants, maybe someday making and painting some models to go with the fluff.

>>966076
Yeah! Laapania is the name of the forge world in question, located in the Ultima Segmentum relatively close  to the great rift in Imperium Nihilus. The proximity to the Rift has resulted in them being almost completely isolated, their only consistent contact outside of the system being with a system containing a hive world nearby, the two planets and their support planets banding together to try and hold things together.

Laapania recently had its knight world fall to the malignant influence of Chaos after almost a century of holding it together. The majority of the knight house getting themselves involved in a cult. They attempted to completely wipe out Imperium and Mechanicus forces on the planet, and widely succeeded, Laapania only able to mobilize its legions of Skitarii and Titans in time to save a meager 39 knights and their pilots. In the process, Laapania's legions were badly mauled. Due to the nature of the war against their own knights, there was a huge emphasis placed on trying to capture the engines rather than outright destroy them.

Three Skitarii Legions were outright eradicated down to the last, the 17th, 18th, and 19th, their legion transponders taken  by the traitor knights as trophies.

When the knight world was fully under Mechanicus control they could call on a sizable force of 387 Knights, that number being ruduced to 39 has resulted in the remaining loyalist knights being rolled into the Titan Legion in a support role.

The Skitarii legions are being bolstered with volunteers from the labor class, eager to seek vengeance for the forge. The legions assigned to the stolen transponders are being deliberately unfilled until said transponders can be reacquired. The campaign ended in a pyrrhic victory, with most of the surviving heretic knights being whisked away into warpspace by their thirsting gods just as their defeat and capture seemed inevitable. As it stands, the previous medieval world has been completely depopulated, either being stolen by Chaos, or absorbed into the population of the forge world, either as loyal servants or as punished servitors.

As it stands, Laapania is woefully below even half of the strength it could previously field. It was never a prominent, front line forge world. However its found itself on the back foot, and the planets Fabricator-General intends to show the heretics just what happens when you don't finish off a forge world. The Knight world is being remade into an agri-world as a bargaining tool with the nearby hive world.

A couple of quirks of Laapania are its zeal in dedication to the *machine* portion of the Machine-God. Do not mistake that as Tech-Heresy however, the Laapanian priesthood disdains Abominable Intelligence as much as any adherent sect. However, the priests of Laapania do hold a certain disdain for the weakness of flesh that can be seen as extreme, even for the Mechanicus. Where possible Laapanians avoid the use of servitors, preferring directly controlled robots slaved to an Adept, or conventionally augmented laborers without any lobotomization. Servitors are present, however they are exclusively the product of Laapanian criminal punishment. Vat-grown servitors are completely absent, and combat servitors are similarly eschewed. In fact, when it comes to combat servitors the Laapanian Skitarii will actively refuse to utilize them at best, or outright dismantle them to reclaim weaponry which they will deliver to the legio cybernetica enginseers.

Laapania also makes a pattern of Hellgun exclusively for an IG heavy infantry regiment from the previously mentioned hiveworld. The Laapania-pattern hellgun is designed with long-term reliability and usability in mind for extended campaigns. The actual lasgun portion of the weapon can, in extreme circumstances, be quickly disconnected from its backpack power source and loaded with conventional powerpacks loaded like a bullpup in slots previously occupied by the cabling to the backpack.

So, I've been writing this story piece about a female aardwolf in love with a male sheep, them living in Zootopia, and exploring the whole metaphor of predators with prey versus real-life tensions between human cliques.

And I was all prepared to try and work out a new chapter, but... honestly, the recent-ish national news have kind of hobbled what I want to say. I don't know. It's sort of taken the creative wind out of me.

It's like... I'm writing about more subtle forms of prejudice and how bad that is, and here we are where telling an African-American to 'go back to Africa' is a matter of debate as to whether or not it's racist-- with some 1/2 of the country apparently thinking that it's not (!!!)

Anybody else try to write and get stopped by real-life events like that?

Constantly. Or by the good old "somebody already did my idea better".

It's discouraging. But it's also all noise at the end of the day.

the old adage that you don't tell stories to fit the current news (or in more innocent cases, 'trends'), but because it's something you want to or feel like you gotta tell. The question is not so much if it reflects the world ,or if the issue you portray is 'worse' - it's about wether you can use the story to make yourself feel good for writing it, or work through something of your own.

I get where you're coming from, but it'd be a shame to let it deter you.

Wow, that's really cool and detailed.  I don't have anything that nice sounding yet.

Stygies VIII was always a favorite faction of mine, especially the Xenarites.  I was thinking I'd develop an offshoot faction that settled on some kind of arctic planet to study Necron tech, since that's one of the other armies I collect.  Haven't so much as got a name for my Heretechs yet, though.

Further, I'm a bit hung up on color scheme.  I wanted to go for a two tone pattern like Voss Prime, but I'm not sure if I want to lean fully in on an arctic then with white and a light icy blue, or if I wanted to go for a dark stealth theme to mirror the stealth technology used by their parent forge world, likely black and still with some kind of blue.

Stygies VIII is a cool one, and has a dedicated blurb in the Admech Codex!

For color schemes I was thinking I'd mix it up from the regular Mars colors. I was thinking their cloaks would be some sort of indigo or even teal, and all their cybernetics would have a bronze coloration rather than the silver gunmetal look.

they didn't have a choice. everything in their lot has gone wrong. short lives, betrayed, turned into living machines

they were the end-all; the most powerful, but dormant. and you cannot even say they are taking revenge on a universe that has forsaken them... as they have not even the capacity for revenge

I wrote this in a /lounge/ thread a while back, where the subject of Perturabo came up. Mostly in an attempt to explain the character of Perturabo, as I knew him.
Mind you that the information is mostly based off of random bits and pieces of information, from wikis or talking with others, or watching videos, rather than the novels or anything like that.
It might not necessarily be 100% accurate, but, since 40k kind of came up here, I figured it might be worth sharing.

Horus had everything, and decided to turn traitor anyway. He fell for the seductive wiles of Chaos, for no other reason than it was there. He was the beloved hero of the Imperium, the favored and honored son. And yet he threw it all away.
Horus had every reason to stay loyal. Yet he didn't. He willingly joined chaos, body and soul.

Perturabo, he had nothing. He was given the worst of the worst missions of the imperium, suffered the most devastating wars in its history, was given the dirtiest jobs imaginable, day in and day out. He and his men were thrown into meatgrinder after meatgrinder, trench after trench, with an Imperium that'd write them off because they weren't cool or interesting battles.
Nobody cares about how you stormed the most fortified city imaginable, line by line, trench by trench, at the cost of thousands of your own.
Nobody honors those who die for only inches, bit by bit, with a shell-torn wreck left to show for it.

Perturabo was a simple man. He wanted to build a great civilization. He wanted to make the world a better place. Instead, his father mistook his determination and will to do what was necessary as callousness and heartlessness, giving him the worst jobs in the imperium.
He took Perturabo as though he was nothing more than a machine, with no desires or feelings within him. As though he was someone who could watch his men die by the thousands and feel nothing. As though he could see his people struggling bit by bit for nothing, without any praise or remembrance. He thought giving one of the most gifted minds in the history of the Imperium, one of the greatest builders, a man who could truly build a better world and actually had the desire to do so, was nothing more than an empty husk perfectly suited to being the cleanup crew for when jobs are too hard for his favorites.

Perturabo turned traitor not out of a desire for power, not out of a lust for the temptations Chaos offered. Perturabo turned traitor because, year by year, trench by trench, death by death, he learned to hate the Emperor in the way only a jaded, beaten, and forgotten man can. He never cared about Chaos, in the end. Just take one good look at his legions, and you can see that. Where every other legion was corrupted, twisted by chaos, turned into crude icons of their gods, the Iron Warriors remained. They endured. Where every other chapter was eroded, where they all forgot their former standards, their discipline, their fortitude, the Iron Warriors endured.

Perturabo gave everything he had for a nation, a father, that cared nothing for him. For his people. For his desires or dreams. He gave everything, and got nothing for it. Time and time again, he was ignored, shunted, put off, or just plain forgotten.
He was treated like shit by everyone around him, with his only crime being he was good enough at his job that they always sent him the jobs nobody else could fix.
Not even his own home planet treated him right. In the end, they turned their back on him, too. And that was the straw. That's what made him see the true light. It wasn't about turning traitor. There was nobody to betray. They didn't care for him, not his home, not his nation, not his father. They were the ones who betrayed him. And, just as they would take each trench inch by inch, Perturabo learned that, bit by bit.

TL;DR, Perturabo did nothing wrong.
Iron within, Iron without

I do love the story of Perturabo.  The manner in which the various primarchs turned against the Emperor is oftentimes quite interesting.  The other big favorite of mine is Konrad Curze, head of the Night Lords.  His time in the Imperium was spent essentially being a sort of Batman character, acting outside of the law to scare criminals into submission.  The Emperor found this dangerous and uncouth, he condemned these actions as abominable.

A recording, from just after the Horus Heresy, shows an Imperium assassin entering Curze's stronghold.  They effortlessly walk through the stronghold, as though there was no resistance at all, before coming face to face with Curze, himself.  Curze addresses the assassin: "Your presence does not surprise me assassin.  I have known of you ever since your craft entered the Eastern Fringes.  Why did I not have you killed?  Because your mission and the act you are about to commit proves the truth of all I have ever said or done.  I merely punished those who were wrong, as your false Emperor now seeks to punish me.  Death is nothing compared to vindication."

The assassin leaps forward to strike their fatal blow, but the video feed ends there, and no one is sure where either of them are to this day.

Perturabo had his virtues, but I feel this write-up too... one-dimensional. It fails to capture the flaws of such a character.

Perturabo was iron in more ways than one. As unbreakable as iron to be sure, able to face any strife with the will and ability to overcome. He was also as inflexible as iron. Even when the situation called for him to bend and adapt, Perturabo would not, so assured of his superiority. His was was the right, no, only way. As unfair as it was for the Imperium to disregard Perturabo and the Iron Warriors for their accomplishments, when it comes to the legion itself Perturabo was as uncaring and disregarding as the wider Imperium. They were not men, they were numbers in the mathematics of war to serve his ends, nothing more.

Perturabo left every planet he conquered worse than he found it. Including his homeworld, and so it rebelled. Rather than learning from this experience, he set Olympia to the pyre, for how could they go against him, who was so obviously correct?

Perturabo wanted to create a utopia, but only ever put in enough effort to lead as an uncaring tyrant. Just like his father, both of them.

Feeling a little frustrated with myself.

I wanted to try and write today. Even if I didn't get mucb done, I wanted to at least look over what I had and maybe try to plan a bit.

But I slept...so much again.

I got up at 9, was awake for maybe an hour or two, then I got back into bed to get warm because the house was so cold.

And then I slept. All day. Probably would have kept on sleeping if it wasn't for my alarm going off.

And now I'm just...ugh I'm so frustrated and tired. I could probably still look it over, but the mood has gone out the window and every passing day makes me feel more and more like I should just give it up.

It probably is. Maybe half my frustration has been just trying to get things rolling with the doctor.

I don't know enough to make assumptions about things, but from my end it's very frustrating that they can't do a blood test just to disagnose me, and let my doctor start actually treating me. I don't even know what it is yet, but they keep telling me that I have to talk to the doctors who do the test. So...my clinic has been trying to get me an appointment with someone in town or closer at least, because I can't just get any day off work I want.

It's just been frustrating. And, coffee hasn't been working. Which scares me a little because that's my main go to thing to deal with it, and I know my body well enough to know that if caffeine isn't working, nothing else will either.

I don't know, I see my doctor tomorrow about something unrelated, but I might ask her if I can take medical leave until it's dealt with or at least until we start treating it.

They could put me on light duty at work, but that won't work when I have to do the closing shift. I'm really stressing it tomorrow, I'm going to have to ask my coworker to do a bunch of stuff for me before they leave.

(Ha, trick question! Every part got to me!)

The part where Lyra couldn't stop Twilight and Moondancers friendship from falling apart.

The fact that she had always been the glue holding it together, and once she was removed from the picture, it couldn't hold up.

That was...so tragic. And painful. You have to wonder if something like that could ever happen in your own life. What if you suddenly disappeared from the picture? What strings of the fabric were you helping to keep weaved together?

That's a nice goal to work towards. Right now I'm just trying to switch my thoughts over to more positive things like,

I can carve out enough time to read a page. I can carve out enough time to write one paragraph. Ok you got distracted on the phone, don't beat yourself up over it, just put the phone down and make some tea and see if you feel like writing.

I'm trying really hard to try the advise from a book I have on writers block, and one of the main points of it is to not beat yourself up or get distracted with things that never actually get your work out there where someone else can read it.

Like notes. Notes are fine. Notes are lovely. But notes can turn into a habit of feeling like you accomplished something for the day, when that's not what their purpose is. Their purpose is to be a reminder of what you need to write when you have the time to do it, not let the notes pile up in some drawer, never to be noticed again after they have been laid down.

i finished my first draft of my film script a few days ago. it clocks in at 148 out of 120 pages. So i clearly need to edit it down and revise it to be more concise

i'm taking a week off from it, so that way when i read it again, i'm less attached to it, and can be more objective, i think :PP

no prob! you had no way of knowing, so that's all good

this one is about a guy who is being haunted with visions of fire demons. He tries to live his life the best he can with his conservative but loyal friend, and his trans girlfriend who has to hide her identity around town

the genre is very much in the vein of Night in the Woods, a mundane americana supernatural mystery/horror

>>973714
It's mostly from real life experiences. i live in a very conservative town, and as such my friends would tend to fall into that way of being; despite me being the complete opposite in every concievable fashion.

this particular character would be like many in the town and story in his approaches to the world and towards the other characters; including the MC's girlfriend. but unlike some, he's got an ultimate view on life that would rather accommodate her than accommodate hate.

but it still creates tension, friction, and can spark flares of conflict that can burn others in its way

It was originally just a funny idea that I had. Then, the "theater group" element become part of the plot. Then I dreamed the ending, and it was obvious how it would go. I was hesitant at first, but realized that I couldn't not do that, now that I'd seen it. And I realized that's how I'd end the show.

No one dies or anything. The show began in an episodic fashion, and somehow (I feel) it should end in the same way, but with the right kind of episode. If all goes well, it will be weird, for sure.

Alright, I've been putting this off long enugh but I said I'd do it so here it is.

A long long time ago after being highly disappointed with the episode Power Ponies, particularly with how boringly derivative the heroes were without making much sense for the character, I took it upon myself to try to be more creative and faithful. I had three goals in mind when creating each one.
1. They had to have powers and/or abilities that I consider creative, or at least aren't mere expies of existing characters.
2. They have to be based primarily on the mane 6, using their existing character traits and personalities as a base. Specifically, moreso than the Power Ponies.
3. Their abilities should directly counteract that of their Power Pony counterpart. They don't need to be (and shouldn't be) especially powerful individually, but they should have a huge edge in a head to head matchup.

After much writing, I finally created the Sinister Six, a team of supervillain ponies enacting heists and other criminal activity while combating their archenemies, the Power Ponies.

If anyone wants to know more about them, just ask! There are some details I'm still hoping to get some help with, but I'll just leave this here for now and see what kind of interest it draws.

I kinda felt like that was the point?  Like specifically they were embodying other charaters, weren't they?  They weren't supposed to be themselves.

Maybe that's its own thread, though.

Anyway, I'd totally read an info dump on superhero(villain) ponies.

They were definitely made with the mane six in mind, like silly superhero parodies. Twilight is the one who shoots magic beams, AJ is the one with a lasso, Dash changes the weather, Pinkie is hyper, Rarity is fabulous, and Fluttershy (ugh) has anger problems.

Welllll ok~. Just keep in mind there are loads of details about each character I can't get out all at once, so if you want to know more about any in particular just ask. If it's something I haven't thought of, I'll try to come up with an answer ;)

From left to right we have...
Stickywicket! The sweets-loving prankster pony made entirely of sticky bubblegum! Using her amorphous gum body she is a master of the ridiculous, and loves to laugh at would-be speedsters who find themselves humiliatingly stuck to the ground!

Meteoryte! This hyperspeed pegasus is the most brash and cocksure pony in Maretropolis, loving the thrill of pushing her body to its limits. When she slams into the middle of a fight, an ultrasonic boom tears through the atmosphere, causing destruction all around with a huge strain on her body.

The Antimattercorn! A genius pegasus inventor with a sour disposition and a penchant for planning, she invented a head-mounted death ray that fires beams of antimatter! She leads the Sinister Six with her meticulously laid out plans, but is quick to lose her temper when they go awry.

Mesmeralda! This femme fatale prefers to keep out of fights, but provides a dazzling distraction with flashy effects and smokescreens, making it hard to tell just where she is at any time. She often plays a support role gathering information or infiltrating top secret areas, using disguises and her own charisma.

MissFortune! This highly trained ninja has no super abilities, but her quick wits and sharp reflexes make it near impossible to capture her. She's the most level-headed of the Six, and her nimble and powerful body along with her expertly honed intuition allows her to take advantage of every slight opening and misstep, making a fight with her seem like a string of bad luck.

And finally, Yellowbelly! This meek and helpless seeming mare stays out of fights, and makes sure to keep it that way! Those deep eyes of hers cause anyone who sees her to reconsider going against her, as her pitiful gaze is simply too cute to harm! She may seem harmless, but she's all too capable of taking advantage of the sympathy she sparks in others, often using it to get her way.
