My family is comprised of satanists and I refer to their religion as a “cult”. Their satanic practices differ from those of regular LaVeyan Satanism in a way that doubt and dissent are discouraged. I consider that  toxic. They demand unquestioning commitment. I, however, am an atheist, but I attend their rituals to make them happy.

Am I doing something wrong?

Edit: My family is not affiliated with LaVeyan Satanism.

you should be attending the rituals to attain important information to use against them at the eventual murder trial.

...that's ... really interesting, lea. that does sound... a little culty.

Any religion that discourages doubt and dissent is not healthy, if you ask me. Evangelical Christianity, extreme or radical faiths of any kinds.

...questioning is how you come to answers. Some answers for some people will be different than others.

i am a very religious Christian, myself. But, i come to that from asking many questions about the world and my own life.

i do not try to force that view on anyone else. And i think, it is important not to.

Since LeVeyan Satanism doesn't worship a deity, cant you follow it and still be atheist?

LaVey did not encourage the worship of Satan as a deity. Instead, the use of Satan as a central figure is intentionally symbolic. My parents actually worship satan as a deity, which is strange.

 No.959423

>>959420
Yeah, LeVeyan Satanism doesn't worship Satan as an entity. It's more a mixture of hedonism and objectivism.

Theistic Satanism is pretty rare. And yeah, the way they are acting is pretty toxic, if you are telling the truth.

Satanism has always been an interesting bit for me.  Read the bible, honestly if Christianity went kaput I have to wonder how long they'd last, seems most of the religion is just there to antagonize people.  They still get brownie points for the butthurt they cause idiots, gives me something to point and laugh at.

Lol at that woman, Satan clubs.  Muh keeidsz ain't gonna go to heaven cause of dem!  He has to protest and annoy people like idiots!  Watching the religious right fall apart from decay is so entertaining...

Now that is strange, the few satanists I knew lookjed at Satan as something of a Jungian archtype, kind of like pagans.  Hell, I look at the gods in a similar fashion.  I have a Butsudan and while it has gods, the sect I'm affiliated looks at em as reflections of the different worlds of existence.

What is “Satan”?
Is he real or not real?
While LaVeyan Satanism is atheistic in that it rejects the notion that Satan is a conscious entity, it nevertheless adheres to supernaturalism.

I always looked at all that stuff as superstition, Christianity is still the biggest larp in the west.  Thing with Christianity, it was and still to a certain affect is about power.  Most don't realize, esp. back in the day in the deep south religion was all about power.  Look at our politicians, good chunk of em are Episcopal, basically the flag ship denomination of the USA.  For those of us who were in the Boy Scouts if you earned your God and Church badge unless you specified you got the one with the red cross of St. George on it.  You can find logs of old churches back in the day, prominent families would rent pews, mostly slave owning families.  Personal fav would be how they'd use the verse of obey your masters to justify slavery.  Even more amazing is how things like that get white washed and people just go with it, amazing how some things never change.

This just a general religiously related discussion thread?

For me, I've sporadically attended Unitarian services recently. I know that this will vary dramatically based on the facility and region, but I guess from everything that I know I'd recommend checking them out. Progressive, science-oriented attitudes on sexuality and gender match with a sense of community and social justice.

Gif unrelated but cute so I'm posting it anyways.

>Am I doing something wrong?

If you are a minor and subordinate to your parents, and will do what they command, then no, nothing is wrong.  You will not want to conflict with your parents except when they conflict with the state, which is the paramount authority.

If you are not subordinate to your parents, you should pick your own religion.  I do not think any states have Satanism as the state religion, so I think I can reason you live in a country were you are free to choose a religion.

because fundamentalist christians have a right//wrong good/evil mentality. in the eyes of your community, you can't just become atheist without also becoming evil in their eyes.

so you could either a) become an atheist and be perpetually misunderstood by everyone. u could try to reason with your family and friends, but any progress you make would be overshadowed by the fact that they would always see you as evil.

or you could b) skip the drama and unwanted pity and play into their worldview by telling everyone you're a satanist. now people will feel like you've chosen a "side" and will leave you alone. u don't have to feel like you're misunderstood - you have an identity that is easy for others to understand.

But it's a label that doesn't really reflect your beliefs. LeVayan Satanist dont' actually believe there is a Satan. It's just a weird combination of Atheism, hedonism and Objectivism. Which all already have names!

 No.959690

>>959683

that may be so, but if you go to your parents or church and try to explain to them what atheism, hedonism, or objectivism is, they will not understand it. in the back of their mind, they will b thinking that satan has deceived you, but they will be polite, pity you, and try to "save" you - not healthy behavior to be the target of.

if, on the other hand, you just say what they're secretly thinking, then it makes it much easier to be around them, because it's out in the open - even if you don't believe it.

This is simply not always true.  Best not to base any important decisions on such assumptions.
