>Rule 8. Do not post threads or posts that are deliberate provocations to certain users, or deliberate provocations concerning the topics of Race, Religion, Nationality, Political Opinion, or Membership of a Particular Social Group;

Does being a gamer qualify as "Membership of a Particular Social Group"?

(Note: this thread is just for fun; it's not a serious request for official clarification.)

Has anyone actually tried to provoke any gamers? Most of us here play games.

>social group

If you want to call people who isolate and obsess with button-fiddling to the exclusion of all social contact except whining about being oppressed when they're in fact being enabled, then sure.

California's civil rights statute doesn't define "protected classes" but refers to membership within a group as perceived as well as real so, applicability of "groups" is more general here than federally.

But the Joker was a bad guy, and insane... and the movie goes out of it's way to show us he was wrong...

Sometimes I wonder if people actually understand half the movies they watch.

 No.952692

>joker insane and wrong

What the movie shows us is that he's glorious.  I love when they say you think you can just come in here and steal from US, he just says "yeah".

Im not entirely sure hes insane so much as a sociopath with a LOT of enthusiasm and a death wish.

Edit:  wait this is this thread and it came to the Joker.  Manley...

 No.952693

>>952692
>Im not entirely sure hes insane so much as a sociopath

Um... Aren't those the same thing? And no, it's clear he's nuts. That version of the Joker (From the Dark Knight film) leans more toward being an anarchist than other version, which lean more toward nihilism, but he's still insane.

I added an edit.

I dunno, to me that Joker had a lot of qualities i admire.  Aren't movies there so we can live out those things vicariously without consequences?

Tell me bout the nihilist joker, which ones he?

 No.952695

>>952693
>sociopath vs insane

No not the same thing really, one's a problem with social values and the other is significant impairment in function.  Joker's brilliant, a savant mastermind who gets things done by using his noodle.  He can't do all that effectively if he's insane.

 No.952699

>>952694
Most versions of the Joker are nihilistic.

And you're not supposed to see yourself in the Joker. He's the bad guy. He's one of a few Batman villains who you're NOT supposed to sympathize with. Some like Mr. Freeze or Two-Face have sympathetic backstories, or mental issues outside their control that make them on some level sympathetic. You can understand their actions, but not condone them. The Joker is different. He's %100 evil, with no redeeming qualities or sympathetic aspects. And when you THINK he has those, it turns out he was just manipulating someone (and the audience) into thinking he does.

>>952695
Then we'd have to come to a consensus on what "insane" means. To me, murdering dozens of people without remorse kind of makes you insane. Dogmatic adherence to your world-view even in the face of evidence against it makes you insane.

 No.952702

>>952699
Perhaps we'll have to disagree on definitions for insane.  I do like yours!

Cmon now, when Joker extorted his half of the money from the organized crime bosses, dont tell me you didn't consider him the protagonist in that part of the movie.

The way Batman storylines having multiple bad guys really lets that sorta micro-climate kinda relationship between the viewers and the villains has always been my favorite aspect.  Then there's the "POW" effects in the fight scenes but i digress.

>Then we'd have to come to a consensus on what "insane" means.

I'd define insane as some level of "incapable", which the Joker is not.  He's very capable, and seems to know exactly what he's doing.

 No.952717

>>952702
Him extorting the money didnt make me think think of him as the protagonist. Alfred explains a few scenes later what thats supposed to represent. That Batman's pressure on the mob made them desperate and they  turned to someone they didn't fully understand. And that the Joker isnt looking for moeny and just wanted to cause chaos. Or as Alfred  eloquently puts it "watch the world burn".

>>952709
Then how would you describe him?

Probably just evil, which isn't something I think should be associated with insane.

I'm pretty sure the meme is making fun of people who take "gamer" as an identity seriously and act like it makes them oppressed. I'm pretty sure that the use of the joker is supposed to be making fun of a rather juvenile mindset, like it's an avatar a 13 year old kid would use to say "don't fuck with me" or "I'm very edgy".

 No.952768

>>952616

Also, the "Ancient" gamers being gamers who first got into games from only ten years ago is also part of the meme's joke making fun of a group claiming to be "real" gamers based on how long they've been playing games.

Smh my head Do you wanna know how i got these scars? Well, I mean video games have been around since the late 70s, but it's really only millennial who grew up with video games. Gen X, by and large, aren't still playing games.

 No.952827

>>952805

Millennials includes people who are pushing 40 at this point. many of whom have been playing since the late 80s and early 90s, when most of them were still children.

So, the joke about gamers being ancient if they had been playing since like, 2007 or 2008, and thus "badass" and not to be fucked with, is mocking a juvenile and narcissistic perspective.

 No.952830

>>952805

Also Gen X would have been the Generation that first grew up with games if video games had been around since the 70s. The birthdate range for gen Gen x is usually considered to be from 1964 to about 1980. I am pretty confident to say I know a lot people who were 70s kids who grew up with first and second gen video game consoles.

yeah, that one was launched in 1977, so a Gen X kid born in, lets say ... 1972, probably could have hypothetically had access to one in their home when they were in kindergarten or elementary school.

I have an Atari. It requires a bit more imagination, but it's still pretty fun.

but I see what you mean. We are quickly approaching the third generation of people who grew up with video games.

 No.952843

>>952836

I would say fourth generation, if there is any consensus as to when Gen Z's birth year range cuts off. considering that the millennial birth year rang is usually considered to cut off around 1997 or 1998, and most generations are blocked in birth ranges of roughly 16 to 18 years. That means that Gen Z's cut off year has already passed (most likely anywhere between 2013 to 2015) meaning right now, you've got kids just now entering elementary school or kindergarten who are also going to grow up with video games, the fourth Generation.

 No.952848

it would be strange having parents into video games. I've never had that. That was always my thing and my brother and sister.

 No.952851

>>952848

I mean, I know a number of people, mostly younger millennials and gen z people who grew up playing games with their parents. Heck, I know some Gen Xers whose parents got into gaming with them back in the 70s. It's not unheard of, it's just more common with people whose parents are Gen Xers or older millennials.
