Chop Suey probably is
I remember laying awake with my ex in the morning listening to her Mesmerize/Hypnotize sound tracks.
And that was like 11 years ago.

Yeah, I remember some System of a Down from Middle School, so that's probably in the dadrock territory. Definitely something that an older age group and not the youth might listen to.
Does that mean this is Dadrock now?
Might be, I never heard that one yet.
While in the Aeroplane over the sea is older than most of SOAD, I honestly don't think of dad rock as really being stuff that is just old and probably liked by your dad, I think it's better thought of as rock made for older male audiences ... like dad's.
So like, bands like Wilco, or Spoon, or current Queens of the Stone Age.
I like to think of it as stuff from the olden days you start to listen back to for nostalgia sake mostly.
you mean like "oldies" or "classic rock"?
I mean, those terms already exist.
I think of Dadrock as more like a more recent synonym for what used to be called "AOR" or "Adult Oriented Rock" like the kind of stuff Foreigner used to do or later Def Leppard alabums. Basically stuff that when it was new was targeting an older audience.
have a bit more of this album

this thread inspired me to go back ad listen to Toxicity after so many years.
It's so much worse than I remember it.
Serj Tankian tries to be Mike Patton, but just turns out to be really fucking annoying instead.

I think they do their best and make many people happy.

I think that if toxicity was a purely instrumental album, I would enjoy it much much more.
I mean, I actually kind of like
"bad" or "obnoxious" or cartoonish vocals like that used by Ween or The Knife or even Frank Zappa but Serj Tankian's attempts come of as just trying to come off as tongue-in-cheek and yet also coming off as if he's taking himself too seriously and that just annoys the crap out of me. I honestly think whatever effect Tankian was going for, he could have achieved it much better with a different vocal approach or with a different singer.
