Do you like golf?

Never played it.

Sometimes I enjoy golf video games.

Golf is for white people.

Why are you being racist?

A big part of Tiger Woods' fame was the fact that a blasian person playing golf was uncommon. let alone being one of the best. Can you name any OTHER non-white golfers? Go ahead. Name 2 more. I'll wait.

I mean to be fair you literally kinda just proved his point by answering "No but I can look up non-white golfers."

How so?  If he had asked me to name any white golfers, I would need to look up that information too.

i play it when my family is in town, they all love golfing

i used to actually be pretty good, even one a tournament in middle school. but it wasn't the sport for me

There's only 26 names here for the entire history of the sport.

The only thing I've ever really played is minigolf, and that's okay I guess. It's nice for a special occasion when you're going out with the family, but it's not something I'd probably do every week.

lol, Tiger Woods is literally the only golfer I know.

Sure there must be some white guys too, but I don't know any of them.

The majority of players are white. In fact, according to Wikipedia, there's only been 26 black golfers in the entire history of the sport. And keep in mind that Tiger Woods is mixed. He's Blasian.

Yeah, I can't name any golfers, and I just watched one of them win some major tournament a couple weeks ago.  I don't think anyone here is into golf enough to recognize names that aren't Tiger Woods.

Or maybe Arnold Palmer, I think he was a golfer?  I remember him from all his lemonade tea.  But then I'm not entirely sure he was a famous golfer.

> In fact, according to Wikipedia, there's only been 26 black golfers in the entire history of the sport.
How did you misinterpret that so badly?  There 26 black golfers who are so famous that they have Wikipedia pages about them.

No???? There's like, holy shit, hundreds of Asian golfers.

Golf is like… holy fucking shit, golf is giant in Asia.

Black people aren't the only non-white people to exist. Regardless. your numbers are wrong. as >>563879
pointed out

Ok, that's a better answer than "There's been 26 black golfers ever".

…the subject of the thread is golf.

i've received a report for "racism" from a fresh IP, alleging a violation of rules 1 and 2, of which i am somewhat inclined to agree, but also somewhat inclined to disagree.

The point raised by Manley here was pretty out of the blue, with a sweeping generalization. But, it's been drawn out into a conversation, to which the OP doesn't seem to mind.

i'll conclude by saying that i'll watch the thread if it gets out of hand, but i'd not like to jump the gun and issue any warnings at this point.

How could anything said here be considered "racism".

And don't worry, Moony. I'm done with the conversation. Apparently there's a large golf following in Asian countries, but no one here knew enough about golf to say that until >>564293

>How could anything said here be considered "racism"
You said "Golf is for white people.".  Imagine if a golf course (that is open to the public) erected a sign by their entrance with that text.  How do you think civil rights advocates would respond to that?  If a black person wanted to play to golf there, do you think he/she would feel discriminated against?

A black person would feel discriminated against trying to play golf with or without the sign. Something doesn't need to be announced for it to be a facet of the sport. Do you know WHY Golf is "for white people"? It's not because black (or other PoC) people are incapable of playing the sport. It's because it's mostly played at country clubs and resorts frequented by the %1. If there were more People of Color in the %1, then that would change. Tiger Woods gained notoriety because he was bucking a trend. He was a trailblazer in a sport that was predominantly white before that point.

Saying "golf is for white people" is not the same as saying "golf should only be for white people" It's just a reflection of the reality of things. So no, a golf course shouldn't put out a sign like that. But at the same time, the sign isn't needed if that is how everyone there already feels.

He doesn't have a point though.

Can you name three non-white fire truck drivers? No? Well then. Is the profession racist, or you… or BOTH?

I don't have statistics, but I would guess that the majority of golf is actually played at regular old golf courses that are open to anyone. Have you ever even set foot on a golf course Manley? I doubt you are much of an authority on the subject.

I'm not allowed on golf course!

You might not be allowed on the nearest golf course to you but there are thousands or courses you could just walk on to in America if you actually wanted to golf.

I like playing Mario Golf everyonce in a while but I am generally pretty disdainful to real life golf.

It's cracked, so whatever they say needs to be taken with a truckload of salt. Whether true or not though, I wasn't talking about "golf: racist? Y/N" but the argument itself. This argument pops up kind of often and it logically fails completely. There's probably a fallacy name for it. "Appeal to anecdotal ignorance"? Probably not that one, but it does sound like a deceng guess.
