Aaay!

I was writing a little this morning. Been kind of on and off since then.

I don't know, having this thread or something similar up like it gets me a little more motivated than without it.

I guess it works like a reminder since I spend a lot of time on here; oh I'm just sitting here browsing the chan? Put the notebook in your lap and write while you do.

Heh, that's great.

My writing is, as always, limited.

Buuuuut I did recently come up with another 8-page horror comic for if I get asked to participate in issue #3 of the zine I am working on a stor for now, and I have aded a few little details to this new premise that like, nobody but me wil lget at all, heh.

Started the (like fourth) re-write of the Fallout Equestria fic I've been working on on and off since 2011.

The main reason I'm re-writing is that I changed the main character to female, but I also just kind of felt like redoing stuff somewhat, even though I'm not really changing that much, at least not in regards to the events.

I started with a short dream sequence, because apparently that's what I do now.

I found a place calling for 40k scripts to turn into an audiodrama. I've been outlining a story from my homebrew to perhaps submit.

An idea I think I'll go with is a Magos meeting with an Arch Duke, the plot being the two verbally navigating through each other's social niceties due to circumstances forcing them into contact. Lots of veiled threats, subtle innuendo and doublespeak in the veneer of courtesy.

 No.1018029

>>1018028

That sounds pretty dope.  I'm so used to 40k literature being "and then the Space Marine shoots it like really hard" that I tend to zone out when stuff is floating around, but there's a lot of interesting stuff that could be going on in that universe.

Well, my story for the homebrew only has Heretic Astartes show up during a Chaos incursion. Loyalist Astartes are entirely absent. Most of the homebrew is a two-system alliance that has managed to hold themselves together and loyal to the Imperium on the wrong side of the Great Rift. To maintain this a lot of politicking is required.

The idea between the Archduke and the Magos takes place before said incursion though, the Mechanicus got a whiff of smugglers moving Chaotic iconography and he's trying to snuff it out before everything goes horribly wrong.

I wrote a couple small things in the past for different stuff, but the only things I've ever really focused on for fanfiction writing is FiM and the Spyro reboot.

Most of my MLP stuff was crossovers, though, so you could say I wrote fics for Doctor Who and Warehouse 13 and Dragonrealms. But I don't really count that.

I've pretty much moved on from fanfiction, working on developing my own original worlds (I have like three separate large-scale story "universes" in the works), but I'm going to keep plodding along with this Fallout Equestria thing until I either finish it or die, whichever comes first.

I'm writing this MLP thing. I wanted to do it to complete something, because I've started fanfics in the past and have never gone all the way through with them. So the challenge I set for myself was to finish a short story, as a way of learning and moving on.

That was fifteen months ago! Almost done, though. It began as a very simple idea and has been a roller coaster since. I really hope some people will get as much enjoyment out of reading it as I've had writing it.

>>1018021
Oh gosh, when I write I have to have total concentration. I don't even put on music anymore because it tampers with my mood.

I find motivation comes from having a clear picture of something in one's mind's eye. One of my brothers is a climber, and he said he got into it when he was hanging around folks who were talking about it, and then one morning he had a vision of mountains in his head. It's like that.

 No.1018693

I think a relevant question for this thread.
I have been picking up some ghost story collection of ye olde days to read lately. (In progress: Benson, upcoming: Wharton/Lovecraft collections)
I do wonder, what are some decent original horrorstories written in novel format in the last, say, 25 years?

Original as in, not immediately a rewrite or a remastered edition of a classic story.

Bonus if the horror does not take place in the olden days.

It didn't really scare me, but I found Orson Scott Card's, Homebody, to be a good ghost story. It seemed pretty original to me, and wasn't a huge novel. Sizable, but not huge.

Might read it again, actually.

Man, I've had a really good week writing.

I've been rping with someone on another site, with two characters that I have had for a lot of years and have been building on their story for a long time. And this week I got to do so much rping I'm getting into what happened with these character, and getting close to the conclusion of their story, that I've never got to tell anyone until now! And it feels really good to finally be able to finish something like that.

Oh! Oh! And on top of that, the way I built these characters up and how much I put into making their story tragic, it actually worked! The person who I am rping with told me how my last written post really got to them, how it actually made them feel like a pit in their stomach, and it was almost too realistic and dark.

And I was like, YES! Years of trying to get that feeling across through my writing finally payed off! It's not just in my head anymore, I actually worked towards something and got the reaction I was hoping for!

It just like...I think this is the first time I've kind of had solid proof to put my own doubts at rest.

Like, friends being supportive is good-I need that support and someone telling me that my writing is good, and I can do it. But then there is always that little voice in the back of my head feeding me self doubt.

With this, there was no set-up or asking how my writing is. This person didn't know me before this, so their reaction to it was so genuine and exactly the reaction I was trying to get. So it's like telling that little doubtful voice,

"There! See! You have improved. You can write as good as you wanted to."

They're still looking for it.

Anyways. Sort of random.
I was looking at those crazy fafic pictures of Steven Universe.

Than I thought of fantheories/predictions that came true or not as a thread topic. So i thought of a remark invoking that Pinkie Pie having a kid is the closest we could get to live Pinkie make out session on the MLP show.
Which made me think of the hillarious scene of Cheese bringing out the rubber chicken when Pinkie asks for a rubber for protection. Pinkie would give him a stern shake of the head and then Cheese would bring out a tiny helmet to put on Boneless' head and Pinkie would smile and say they were ready to do it.

Then I had the weird thought of Shining Armour yelling "Owww, she bit me in the wang" on the most Gilbert Gottfried nasal tone ever during his honneymoon night and then I stranded on the thought that "Cadence is the best at sex" could be a hilarious fanfic on Cadence being the authority on spiritual/emotional love but actually being hilariously ignorant on the physical aspects.

And then I wondered on this writer's club if anyone has had a go at stories like those.

Two days ago marked the one year anniversary of the current iteration of the story I'm working on.

According to Word, I have spent 930 hours in "total editing time".

Some calculations:
That's about 2.5 hours a day, every day;

If it were a job, it'd be one I spent about 18 hours a week doing;

If it were a full-time job, it's one I would have spent five months at before I left;

If it paid minimum wage, I would have earned $6,743 from it.

i never really posted in this thread before, i guess cause my writing is such a private experience for me. but eh, why not? i did enough writing to feel valid in here.

i had written a 150 page screenplay last year, and this year i managed to bring it down to 120 pages. and now i'm revising and adding things, and it's gonna probably going to land somewhere around 126-128 pages, and i'll have to find a way to shave another 8 pages -_-

it is one of the most important personal projects for me, and i legitimately am hoping to shop it to studios and get a real film deal out of it, or at least an Option to drive my career forward <3

well i don't wanna get too in depth with the description, but it's about a guy who is stuck in a rut with his life in a small mountain town. he has good things like a close friend, a beautiful girlfriend, a loving father, and things seem stable. but he starts seeing things... weird apparitions that appear in his dreams, but now in life, and with them there is always a fire that starts.

it's a bit of a psychological supernatural film. it's long from complete cause there is stuff i still need to fix and tweek, but i'm getting there ^^

Mine is about a human girl who meets a magical fox, and discovers that her world is far bigger than she'd thought, and also she might be the only person who knows how to save it.

I'm discovering the finer details as I go, but I've been working on the plot for years. I'm even building the world and most of the creatures that live there are my own interpretations. Best of all, it's narrated by a dragon who dislikes humans

There's a subdermal layer of fat phone somehow autocorrected that word to "gay" and connective tissue. Depending on how tough of a hide and how well it's attached it may be varying difficulties to pull off cleanly. Sometimes it's heavy thick skin that you can pull off the muscle like it's a glued down sweater, slowly peeling as you rip away the fat. Sometimes it isn't much more durable than what is holding it down and you need to support the delicate sheet with the flat of your knife while you cut through the silvery connective tissue or you'll end up tearing it to shreds and then you've significantly increased the amount of time you need to spend cleaning the meat as well as completely ruined the hide.

Uh, barring that little aside, I guess I've properly started and been plugging away at my attempt for a novel. It's not going to be super long but I know the plot threads and I can keep it relatively focused.

Interestingly for me I actually know how this one ends, the main character dying his "first death." Everyone in the setting dies twice, once when their "soul" is destroyed, and then when the husk left behind wastes away from neglect or is destroyed in an accident. Sometimes the dead are able to wander back and are put to work.

"A new coffee mug...sits on my desk. It's black with white capital letters saying: "WHAT WOULD YOU ATTEMPT TO DO IF YOU KNEW YOU COULD NOT FAIL?"

Since I keep stumbling into things that have a huge built-in possibility for failure, I don't know how to answer this. But it does make me realize that if you're not writing and sending out your work because you're afraid of failure, you will never write, never be published. What have you ever done that didn't have the possibility of failure hidden in it?"

You know, I've been struggling with something consistently on this darker story-plot.

I've been putting a lot of stress on myself by not really having a consistent beginning or ending to this story, and a lot of that stress has been focused on making sure I go through these, like, 'Beginning, middle, end' for my characters. And I just realized-this story was never about the characters.

I mean, of course, the characters are very important to me, and I want to do them justice and give them all satisfying conclusions-but that's not why I've been struggling with them so much. I've been struggling so much because, when I started the story, I didn't want to write the characters stories, I wanted to write the worlds story. These characters have always been there as a tool to paint this world with, because it's the world that I actually wanted to show off and build.

So, having finally figured that nagging little stress out, I think I'm going to relax myself a bit and start treating the characters for what I had originally meant them to be-a tool to paint the portrait.

Sounds like the right approach. Let events unfold around them instead of because of them, basically.

I dunno if it's similar, but one of my main issues with the danish superheroverse I've been fiddling with on and off for years is that while I have many character base concepts, a lot of them are lacking entirely clear backstories and motivations. But then, a lot of characters started out with just some basics and got fleshed out as things moved on. SO question is if I shouldn't just try writing some of these first encounters, see how things shape up and adapt from there
