Mine is about a human girl who meets a magical fox, and discovers that her world is far bigger than she'd thought, and also she might be the only person who knows how to save it.

I'm discovering the finer details as I go, but I've been working on the plot for years. I'm even building the world and most of the creatures that live there are my own interpretations. Best of all, it's narrated by a dragon who dislikes humans

sort of I guess. The more I learn about worldbuilding, the more I feel like this world needs more development, but I've decided to just run with it at this point and fix the patches later. you can only develop a plan for so long. eventually you've got to put boots on the ground, and the pen to paper

There's a subdermal layer of fat phone somehow autocorrected that word to "gay" and connective tissue. Depending on how tough of a hide and how well it's attached it may be varying difficulties to pull off cleanly. Sometimes it's heavy thick skin that you can pull off the muscle like it's a glued down sweater, slowly peeling as you rip away the fat. Sometimes it isn't much more durable than what is holding it down and you need to support the delicate sheet with the flat of your knife while you cut through the silvery connective tissue or you'll end up tearing it to shreds and then you've significantly increased the amount of time you need to spend cleaning the meat as well as completely ruined the hide.

Uh, barring that little aside, I guess I've properly started and been plugging away at my attempt for a novel. It's not going to be super long but I know the plot threads and I can keep it relatively focused.

Interestingly for me I actually know how this one ends, the main character dying his "first death." Everyone in the setting dies twice, once when their "soul" is destroyed, and then when the husk left behind wastes away from neglect or is destroyed in an accident. Sometimes the dead are able to wander back and are put to work.

"A new coffee mug...sits on my desk. It's black with white capital letters saying: "WHAT WOULD YOU ATTEMPT TO DO IF YOU KNEW YOU COULD NOT FAIL?"

Since I keep stumbling into things that have a huge built-in possibility for failure, I don't know how to answer this. But it does make me realize that if you're not writing and sending out your work because you're afraid of failure, you will never write, never be published. What have you ever done that didn't have the possibility of failure hidden in it?"

-Barbara Abercrombie, A Year of Writing Dangerously

______

That last part, "What have you ever done that didn't have the possibility of failure hidden in it?", I really like.

"Sweetie Belle discovers a calling in a new city and Rarity is supportive of her going to pursue it, despite differences of temperament which have grown between them. But although she is unsatisfied living in Ponyville, Sweetie Belle is afraid of what she will lose if she goes away, and a visit from her older sister pushes her fears to the surface."

The story is set a few years after the finale, but was written mostly before the finale.

You know, I've been struggling with something consistently on this darker story-plot.

I've been putting a lot of stress on myself by not really having a consistent beginning or ending to this story, and a lot of that stress has been focused on making sure I go through these, like, 'Beginning, middle, end' for my characters. And I just realized-this story was never about the characters.

I mean, of course, the characters are very important to me, and I want to do them justice and give them all satisfying conclusions-but that's not why I've been struggling with them so much. I've been struggling so much because, when I started the story, I didn't want to write the characters stories, I wanted to write the worlds story. These characters have always been there as a tool to paint this world with, because it's the world that I actually wanted to show off and build.

So, having finally figured that nagging little stress out, I think I'm going to relax myself a bit and start treating the characters for what I had originally meant them to be-a tool to paint the portrait.

Sounds like the right approach. Let events unfold around them instead of because of them, basically.

I dunno if it's similar, but one of my main issues with the danish superheroverse I've been fiddling with on and off for years is that while I have many character base concepts, a lot of them are lacking entirely clear backstories and motivations. But then, a lot of characters started out with just some basics and got fleshed out as things moved on. SO question is if I shouldn't just try writing some of these first encounters, see how things shape up and adapt from there

Couldn't hurt to give it a shot. Some of my favorite characters I have fleshed out the most came from just making something up on the spot for an rp and playing with them. No major backstories or real personality until I just threw them into situations and seen what happened.
