in part, because i am a New York Lawyer: my income is decent. i also keep my expenses very modest, and am a spendthrift. Except when it comes to those i love <3

Third, is that i am in Taiwan, which is relatively inexpensive to get to, and to enjoy!

And lastly, this is a family trip, where we are visiting family, and voting, so some expenses, such as living, are accounted for as we have places to stay with family.

i am skipping ahead in time to right now, just briefly! This is where i am right now! The original, birthplace of bubble tea!!

ah yes! while bruce lee's style was Jeet Kun Do, and before that Wing Chun, his famous one inch punch was based off the principles of fajing, or "shaking energy" where the energy derived would be cultivated no so much from the root (although that is important) but rather from the waist and it's outward expansion through the strike. So by using his internal strength in his core, he was able to throw massive amounts of energy into a punch from only an inch away, similar to that of a car hitting you at 30 miles per hour.

Baji's basic core practices stem from that same explosive energy, and it's really quite awesome <3

My Little pony ice cream! Ponies are much beloved in Taiwan. Twilight is the most popular pony here, as she is seen as studious and worth emulating. Princess Celestia is also popular! Rainbow Dash is also send as good, as she is sporty and cool, and Pinkie is great for kids. Fluttershy is very well loved, and fawned over.

Rarity and Applejack do not translate as well to East Asian culture, but Rarity is still somewhat liked. Applejack is not a character that makes much sense to Asians, as her attitude, behavior, and mannerisms make not much sense to Asians

Twilight and Fluttershy have the most "Asian" characteristics

>all that food for a dollar
>

i don't think so. there are a few similar principles that go hand in hand. however i don't know too much about Jeet Kun Do outside the fact it was developed by Bruce Lee as a culmination of his Wing Chun training and his studies of other eastern and western arts. but given what i've seen, Jeet Kun Do is very much in the vein of simplest route to victory, simplifying technique, and removing form. every high end martial artist would emphasize the simplification of ones own technique and to never use more than you need to, so that is rather common amongst almost all styles, but the lack of form is a unique trait that seems more in line with ring fighting like Sando, MMA, or Boxing. however one could still see the emphasis of honed technique in how he strikes and moves.

if i had to relate his style to anything else (and believe me when i say this is just at glance, i could be wrong) it feels more like akin to either 7-star mantis or Xinyiquan. both are very direct and intercept incoming strikes, and at the highest levels teach combustive energy in short bursts. bajiquan is still in the same realm, but the emphasis is more on immediate retaliation to force, making it more aggressive than Jeet Kun Do

but this is purely speculation, and i am just comparing what i see. i feel that the principles in Jeet Kun Do are applicable to all martial arts, and at their core, all martial arts have either the core, or started with the core, that jeet kun do has

So I've been following the Carlos Ghosn case for a while now. Admittedly it fell out of my interest up until the most recent events, and I've sort of realized something.

The most ridiculously contrived parts of the Phoenix Wright games is actually how it works over there. If they weren't set in LA then it would be much more believable. A shame.

now i am visiting the gravesite of my grandfather.

He was a pilot in the Old Republic, and he fought against the evil empire.

This is the mausoleum

Many think the war against Japan was very one-sided until America arrived, but that is not true.

The Japanese started Pearl Harbor and the invasion of South East Asia precisely because their war effort in China was stalling, and they needed resources

The Republic put up a valiant effort.

This is the view from up the stairs. This is one of many military cemeteries. Each stone is a pilot who perished in active service during the war. During the second world war, China lost around 20 million people in the struggle against fascist evil - nearly as many as the Soviet Union. Many of these people though are not remembered, and in the West, we are not even aware of their sacrifice.

How to people in Taiwan feel about the Japanese?  Something we never told my fathers side of the family, we had an admiral in the Japanese Navy who fled.  Atomic bomb wiped most of them out in hiroshima.

How are vets treafed in Taiwan?  That's something that always suprised me about Americans, they run their mouths off about war but the minute talk of the draft comes up everyone thinks of a way to try getting out of it.  That and what pisses me, they treat vets here like garbage.

Odd you should mention the war dead, same thing with the wwi and wwii dead in Normandy, i saw the American as well as European graves there, far as i can tell people here either don't seem to know nor care.

Backtracking, good to ear Japan is still like that, know hawaii is.  My grandparents/grrat grandparents graves are stil in immaculate condition, that and esp. On the outer island people care for each other, can't say the same for what I've seen of people here.  Going to be real interesting to see what happens when the economy tanks and people turn on each other more than they already have.  Talking to my cousins is almost like going back in time.  The Japanese kids are still very respectful, shopping malls are still a thing and you could pass out drunk in public and no one would rob you.  Meanwhile here esp. If you're male they love to just diagnose you with whatever and shovel meds down your throat, if you dare question if someone is a fit parent the whole don't judge me nonsense parents here love to spew comes out.

Probably is for the best I'm leaving, never fit in here and the older i get more i realise how little i fit in anymore.

Here it is, my cousin and now a lot of my moms side has seen these and probably as much of Europe as my uncle did.  Cousin is in the service, like a lot of people in Hawaii he's very patriotic.  Reallt interesting to see how people in the mainland honor the war dead vs. The Japanese American and other Asian American communities.

In Taiwan, there are two definitions of veterans. There were the world war veterans, all of whom are treated, or were, i guess, with great veneration, and as heroes.

Then, there are regular veterans, as in, those who served. In Taiwan, that means pretty much every single male of a certain age born before 1994. Nowadays, those born after that year do not need to do it, though they have to do like a 4 month training nonetheless

Veterans receive great benefits, and a stipend. Even when the Republic was destitute, each veteran still received a stipend

If there is one thing Taiwan handles excellently, it is government benefits. Taiwan has, quite literally and actually, the best healthcare system in the world. And some of the best, and best managed, retirement, veterans, etc. benefits.

Taiwanese don't harbor hatred against the Japanese. In fact, there is much we learn from them. You can walk around and see, many blocks have their own izakayas, and Japanese food and culture are popular here.

We... you know, don't like the war denialism, but unlike Mainland China, the war here isn't used as a political prod.

...ironic, since we, as in the KMT, did most of the fighting. but that is another story for another time, ie am thinking c:

That's the way it should be, when one of the few people on my fathers side i was close to died, it was a disgusting mess.  His grandchildren are entitled to no end and have no respect nor appreciation for what was done for them, was a wwII vet too.

Medical is another thing im watching, in the end I'll probably go the cosmetic surgery route, something nurses can do.  You see more and more Americans setting up shop in Tijuana and SE asia to dodge malpractice costs and make a killing financially.  Sooner or later we'll get socialized medicine but it's not going to work out i think.  They're slamming nurses with more and more work, liability included and like doctors not paying them fairly.  When the govt does start dictating what people can and cannot charge for they'll do nothing about the cost of school, malpractice costs nor the lawsuits.  The greedy nature of Americans is really going to screw them, like doctors nurses can go abroad.  That and if you go to the cdc and read starts on millenials its mind blowing how unhealthy they are.  Big suprise the grandkids i mentioned have all kinds of problems, lot of it due to shitty parenting and the crap environment many here have to grow up in now.  Meanwhile the cousins and what not on moms side are still quite well adjusted.  Going to be interesting to see how people here work this out vs. Doing what many in my field think will happen, people here continuing to make it worse while expecting society to clean up their mess.

Ohhhhhh! ....i fee silly. That is a traditional breakfast called "Shao Bing you tiao" or 燒餅油條

A shao bing is a sort of flat bread! Very flaky! The you tiao is ... like a fried crueller donut. Each has a subtle flavor. You put the crueller inside the bread, and add an egg! It is very yummy!

It is often served with a tofu soup, that looks like this! It's not really soup, it's more like porridge. It is called dou Jiang - 豆漿

This is a savory style dou jiang with many mixins. Often, dou jiang is just freshly pressed soy milk!
