So I've been struggling the past few months to motivate myself to start a drawing habit. Well more than that, I've wanted to learn to draw for as long as I can remember, but I've always set up so many road blocks for myself. I bought a tablet years ago and barely used it, I bought a newer, fancier tablet earlier this year and again have barely used it. But I think I finally got a plan to get me started. (I think most normal people simply put art on a page, but I'm not normal people!)
Here's the plan, we're starting with good ol pencil, pen, and paper. I think trying to learn how to use the tablet itself has been blocking me. We can do digital later. I want to use pen for most of it so I can't get thrown off by my perfectionism. Once a line is down, no more fixing it. And this is the important part, I have a hard time figuring out what to draw so I've decided to take that road block out of the way by going through all the Pokémon from number 1 all the way through 800+ whatever! I don't even like Pokémon that much, but lots of them are cute and there's a lot of variety to work with. I bought a stack of paper, and the plan is to find reference images and start practicing construction, composition, shapes, etc. I'm not gonna worry about making original poses (yet), I can copy what I find online so long as I'm not tracing it. I want to be able up construct the same image from scratch using basic shapes and such. I'll get more used to taking a character and creating something completely new with practice.
So, that's the plan, and I've already gotten started. I drew some bulbasaur, ivysaur, and started on venusaur (dude's got so many details!). I'll be using this thread to catalog the art journey, and keep myself accountable to doing the drawings. Feel free to drop in and say hi, comment on the art stuff, or whatever. I'd be happy to take suggestions and draw for people too, might as well, if you don't mind the quality being what it is!

Here's the first guy. I only used pen on this page, which didn't work great when trying to build the image up from basic shapes. You can see I was trying to practice eyes and mouth shapes. If you image search bulbasaur you can find pretty much all the inspiration images, I don't want to pretend I made these from my own imagination. The goal right now is to just get used to the medium and practice putting lines down.

Then there's this dude, slightly less cute bulbasaur. I really wanted to get used to the idea of rotating the character in my mind and drawing it from different angles. So you can see what I was doing practicing the ears. Actually the middle right head was made completely from scratch, no reference image. So that's cool, I made him looking up to specifically practice a pose i didn't find online ^_^

I'm hoping to fill out a whole page for each character, at the least, but damn this guy has so many details. Consider this one a work in progress right now, still so much blank space to fill.

hey thorax! i'm glad to see you are trying to get more into your art! and i know the old "i definitely will do it/won't do it" tango! and honestly it is just a matter of starting and getting that habit, even if it's a small thing daily
and i love your idea for a challenge! limitations like that can help spur creativity, and as you said, get you away from perfectionism, which is the enemy of all art!
i remember what helped me get started in drawing is my own rule "there are no stupid ideas. If you say an idea is stupid, put it in" which was such a great motivator for my art!>>1008822>>1008821>>1008820
great job on the lineart and proportions! your bulbasaur/ivysaur/ and venasaur are very close to the show design, and it seems you have the proportions down pretty well for the most part!
keep it up dude!

Honestly I think it looks pretty decent for a total novice, but it doesn't really feel super satisfying copying a pose someone else drew like that. I dunno, it's a place to start I guess. The whole point for me is to not fuss too hard about things like creativity and inspiration and just get used to the motions. But in the end, I of course want to be making something new, adding to the collection of art out there, ya know.
I want to get into digital painting and make some really colorful shit one day, so lineart isn't super exciting for me. Though when I watch an art stream of some really good artist, the lineart with no shading and no color looks so dang good! Getting experience here seems to be the logical place to start, I'll get to learn the more advanced junk later ^_^

it is looking good! and practice how you feel, getting that drawing to be second nature to you will be your best bet in really expanding outward into that more creative art that you desire. lineart isn't my strong suit either, as i'm much more comfortable with my shading as a means of creating depth and detail. but honestly it all goes to the same mountain top, so learn all you can my friend!
and i look forward to your progress!>hugs and kajis <3
i need to go to sleep now, so i bid you goodnight <3

You're thinking about this exactly the right way.
A tool is a tool - starting with a digital tablet is not necessarily the best first step. After all, it's not the tablet that draws - it's you. The tool can be used for a lot of things, but at the end of the day it's just a digital pen. YOU need to be able to control your hand and make those lines be able to resemble things. There's a reason I show the kids I teach how to sketch by hand on paper with a pencil before we even touch the tablets.
As for the Pokémon challenge, good idea. Lots of variety, lots of body shapes. I understand where you're coming from with avoiding perfection by using the pen, but try to not cling to that for the whole thing. Once you start getting into the habit, youre going to need to challenge yourself further, and this is where I suggest bringing pencil construction sketches into it.
You've no doubt seen those sketches where people construct characters out of simple shapes? A basic skeleton, Circles, trialgues, squares, etc...? Use that. WHen you're a little more comfortable just sitting down to draw, start using that to understand how each pokemon is constructed, especially some of hte more complicated ones. Once you're at that point, you can then start to play around with making your OWN poses instead of just mimicking the official art which, while a very good way to learn, quickly stops being satisfying like you say.
Again, to use the kids I teach as an example, posing can come later after you understand the basic construction principles. One kid I've had has basicaly done T-poses of characters that increased slight bit in detail the last few weeks I had him, to help him understand the construction process and see how even mor ecomplicated characters are built from the same principles. We went from Isaac (Binding of Isaac) to Sans to Peridot (Steven Universe) this way, and it paid off immensely.
All's looking good so far! JUst, yanno, throwing in some cents about the next steps to take.

Good evening, Thorax.
I am glad you are trying to accomplish something you wanted to do for so long.
Just take some time to practice weekly, use how many auxiliar line you need to and have fun.
Let me know when you got a Metagross, okey?

Thanks, I appreciate your thoughts on the matter ^_^
I think I'm doing the pencil construction already, I'm just inking over it and erasing the pencil when I'm done. Check out the head at the bottom here, I left the pencil in on the left side. That one I wasn't using any reference image, not like it's anything special, but it's made entirely from scratch. Woo, it's like new (crummy) art being born!
Gotta say, venusaur is a good subject to practice on, but he's not a very cute lookin guy!>>1008942
Thank you. Yeah, it feels good to be jumping into it finally. I hope I can stick with it. I'm starting to feel less friction each day when starting to draw, which I think is a good thing.
Is metagross your favorite? :3>>1008945
What? That it is just a banana taped to a damn wall? That's my understanding of it! A piece of fruit affixed to a wall with duct tape.
Oh yeah, I see. I just went on that spiel cause you emphasized using pen to "own your mistakes".
Heheh, he a dopey looking chub frog, but hey, that's just even better shape practice. Again, in my classes, I encourage finding some odd-looking characters or use them as examples cause it makes the base principle more clear.
File: 1576123342723.png (21.44 KB, 323x286, 323:286, Kanara26.png) ImgOps Google
Right, yeah. I guess the point of the pen is to get out of the habit of trying to get the perfect line down. I think to myself looking at these drawings that something is just a tad to big or small, a tad offcenter, and I think I'd fuss a lot trying to make it perfect if I hadn't already committed parts of it to ink. And I don't think all that fussing and erasing (at least as much as I might put in if I wanted it to be perfect) is as beneficial as noting how it could be better and moving on to the next drawing.
But that's one of the nice things about the digital medium, you can easily resize or adjust something that's slightly off! There will be so much damn fussing when I do that, lol. For now, I'm trying to learn to settle for some imperfections, I think it is good for me to say "yeah this has problems but we're gonna move on anyway".
Yeah, the pokemon are nice in that there is so much variety to draw. But I think I'll enjoy drawing the cuter ones the most ^_^
I mean as a digital artist, I spam that Ctrl-z like a madman. But that's just part of the process. We all do things differently, and learning not to worry about every stroke is vital - I do NOT adhere strictly to sketch if I can get something better out.
Once we get past christmas, I plan to more aggressively advertise commissions and hopefully afford my first display art tablet. That'd be dope.
Anyway, best of luck with it, looking forward to seeig more.

Here's today's art. I want to get in the habit of drawing at least a little original stuff, even if it's one headshot, but today I'm really beat so this is what you get.
Charmander is weird, I dunno, I feel like he's got too much whitespace in the middle of his face. I wanted to draw his eyes closer together but that's just not how he is. I feel like the difference between cute and uncanny is narrow here with him, I guess it's the artists job to get that right.

As I understand it, Charmander's a fairly old character, so, it could be a holdover from that.
I know some old anime, for instance, has that kind of issue.

Sure, this is my tablet. It's pretty neat, though I probably don't deserve to have something so nice with as little effort I've put into drawing. I bought it hoping putting money down would be a motivator, but no luck with that! But in time, I think I'll get to the point I'm using it and drawing cool art stuff and all that :3
that is a super tablet...
wayyyyy better than mine, looks awesome.
You hush with that "deserve" nonsense.
It does look neat though. Never had a display tablet, but I am gonna save up for one with commishes from here on. See where that takes me

I have not been doing wonderfully emotionally the past few weeks and I let this thread slide, which sucks because I was finally feeling like I was getting someplace with drawing. Well, we've sorted through some of that emotion and are harnessing the power of a new decade to try and get back on the drawing bandwagon.
This isn't even that much, just a few headshots, but it's a start. Honestly charmeleon has an odd head shape. Like, you can hardly even find images of him looking towards the camera because I guess he would look weird if not shown in partial profile. It was more difficult than the 'saurs to get right. But maybe that makes it a good fit practice. I might come back and draw one of him looking straight ahead just to see if I can rotate him in my mind and make it work.

Here's today's chaff for the pile. It's not much, like 1 1/2 charizard heads. But this actually took more time because I really studied his head shape and tried to understand it enough to draw him from an angle different from the reference images I was using. So, it looks shittier and is less drawing than my other pages, but it represents more effort and originality which is important to actually learning I think. >>1013428>>1013433
Thanks guys. It still feels hard to accept praise because I'm not really at a stage I'm contributing much to "art" but I guess I should at least feel good that I'm out there trying.

I'm starting to regret having the banana as OP image lol. It's kinda old news but it's gonna be around a while now if I keep updating this. Oh well!
I started drawing trying really hard to get a perfect charizard head, but I was having trouble putting his eyes on his dumb face. After enough of that, I got tired and gave him goofy eyes. I decided I need to stop trying so hard. Also, I needed to play around a little because I'm not really giving any of my art style or a personal touch. So the bottom sketch I put together much quicker than any of the others, and it probably looks the best, despite not looking like the perfect charizard. But that's okay right, artistic liberty, having your own style and take, I think those are good things. It felt good putting out something that was stylistically different, my own take I guess.
Have been thinking about a lot of the artists I like, and how even very simple art can be extremely appealing when the artist has a nice style. I'm thinking what I would want my own style to look like that's something I'll need to discover I think.

I actually thought of that! But I felt I probably should live with my decision than use my privilege for something so minor.
Also, there's so much caching happening on multiple levels, it's actually kinda more of a pain than you would imagine to do that, I already thought of what it would take ^_^

i'm good for the most part! today was a day off, and i used it to work on some stuff
yesterday i learned that next semester, my financial aid will not be able to cover everything. so i am still on the hook for like $900, which sucks, but i have a plan forward for it. pay off a big chunk, then do a payment plan to wittle away the rest
i may or may not have a plan on getting some more income which may or may not involve me making art for a commission price. we'll see :DD
how are you? are you doin well my friend?

Cloudflare will cache it, which will refresh eventually, yes, though I would prefer to login and clear it if I was doing this. And I can never remember my login credentials with cloudflare because those jerks use very strict password restrictions, arbitrarily. No, you are not making my password more secure by forcing me to use a number, my password is good enough without your shitty restrictions.
Oh anyway, then the site code itself caches images somehow, I don't even understand it, but it is weird and while I can rebuild it it sometimes gets pissy when you make manual changes. It might be simple, or it might just fail to load the image, I've never tried doing this kind of thing with it.>>1013690
Yeah, that one did come out pretty well!>>1013689
Which pedro is that?>>1013691
whatdya work on?
Oh hmmm, have you done commissions before? Not like I'm near the point I would be able to do commissions, but I haven't even considered that one day maybe I could put my art out there like that, with enough practice. Huh, that would be pretty cool. I'd commission something from you, but I'm entirely and completely broke for the first time in my adult life!
I'm okay, like I'm feeling pretty good. I'm trying to use the mystical forces of the new year to get back on track with some things. I've been making sure to hit my exercise goals and art goals every day. And I just talked to my mom about the kinds of things I can do with my hair now that it is a little longer. My hair is now maybe 5-6 inches long, which is about 4-5 inches longer than it has even been, so I'm playing with it a lot to see what I can do with it. That's kinda fun.
But yeah, I'm doing alright. I'm still waiting on news from Facebook and Amazon interviews I did last year. Like, somewhere out there there is a committee of people deciding whether my life is going to be good or it is going to continue being a terrible struggle. Kinda funny to think of it that way, but it's basically true. Considering I'm working off the welfare of friends now, no more savings, I told Andrea we have to tighten the belt a lot. We had been pretty much spending at the same level, but now I told her we are going to be budgeting strictly from here out. That's a change. But I think it is good for both of us, have to actually think about what we are eating and paying for. I don't think that's bad, we can still eat good food if we actually look for deals and shop around.

and i have not! i'll be new to it, and i've talked with Esh about it, given his expertise in the matter. i feel that my style is consistent enough to at least make something that people will be happy with.
hey, don't worry bout it! you take care of yourself first ^^
there you go! positive affirmation to direct the new year right! i love it! and i know it will help you out! ooh i would love to see your new hair style when it's done! i have long hair myself, but i really need to take care of it a bit more
i'm gonna send my good vibes to you! may you get either the facebook or amazon job, and that your belt tightening will only come from healthy changes in diet and excersise!

Cool, cool. I love your animations :3
Esh is the resident art master, I hope I can match his dedication and skill some day! What kind of commissions do you think you would offer? Have you figured out pricing and tiers and all that?
Well the funny thing is my hair coils so tightly, my hair still looks really short. I borrowed some hot curlers from my mom which might straighten it a bit while leaving a bit of curl, I want to see how that looks. I'm finding there is so much I can do with it now that it has a little length. I used to just brush whatever I had back and leave it at that. Now I'm neck deep in conditioners and gels and something called a hair smoothie, and curlers clips etc etc. But it's fun, I like seeing what I can do with it.
Yeah, I really would be happy if one of those two came through. I'll also probably retake my interview with Google this month, and I have opportunities at PayPal, Apple, and Sailpoint if all goes well.

thank you <3 my latest one recently got a bit of an uptick in views, which is nice! and i believe you will enjoy the latest one when it's out ^^ it's a ways off though
oh yeah! he's like an ox! always pushing forward and just being such a consistent force of good arts! i was going to do your standard character thing with different tiers for shading, extra characters, backgrounds ect.
esh and i talked about pricing tiers, and he heavily emphasized that i am paid what i'm owed for the amount of work that i do, and no less. he told me his tiers, and it's given me at least an idea of what i want to do. I'm still working out the kinks, but i want the base tier to be for a character with color, then tiers for shading, extra characters, and then background. I have an idea of the prices i want to put on them
natural curls are very coveted by a lot of people! but i also understand that wanting straight hair would be an awesome too! hehe, long hair comes long responsibility! deep conditioner is a must if you want some good looking hair! also hair oil is nice for a glossy shine <3
ooh cool! all those sound awesome! MMMM!

What about animations? That's like your specialty! I know you aren't gonna make a 5 minute video for someone, that would be way too much work and nobody would be able to pay for that time. But have you thought about doing short 3-10 second gifs and animation loops as a commission? I think that could work. Imagine doing a short clip of noelle turning and kissing susie on the cheek or something, you could probably throw that together pretty quickly and I bet some people would be interested in stuff like that ^_^
I like my curls! It's just the coil so tightly that I can't really emphasize my length like that. I think I want something that really curls but also flows down, ya know. That would be the best I think! So, I need to loosen the hair up a bit. I think it's good to love your natural hair, but I need to be able to work it a bit too!
Yeah, I at least have a lot of interest. I remember when I did my unemployment for a few years after the great recession, I barely had anyone talk to me. And I never moved past a phone screen. So, I feel good about this, even if I don't have a job yet. At least I have good experience and people see the value in me, even if I haven't been the right guy for the job yet.>>1013718

oh? i haven't even thought about that before... yeah! that might be a good idea! and because of the work output required to do them, they would naturally be worth more to commission, and could really help me out more than not! that's actually a really neat idea! thanks Thorax! i'll have to look into what people charge for that kind of thing! it may not get as many hits as the image commissions, but that would probably be balanced out by the price needed
i get ya i get ya! i have naturally curly hair and i love my curls too! but art needs attention, and your hair is art!
oh yeah! you have people that like you, you have skills people like, and i have no doubt you'll get a hit here soon!

Ahh, that makes sense! But what good is it if Pedro can't help you bury the body?>>1013737
Yeah! If you like the idea, maybe you should put together a short example clip or two so people know what they are getting. That can also give you and idea of how much effort it really takes to make something good enough for commission and then you can find the right price for it. I think that would be a good way to offer something with a better value, and I think there are less artists out there doing animations which might give you an edge :3
If I find any really nice hairstyles for me, I'll be sure to share some pics ^^
I'm sure hoping so! I'm growing comfortable with my situation, but it still kinda sucks being in debt and only digging deeper by the day!

that would be pretty cool! i already have my videos that showcase what i've done in the past. but i could also make a couple different small scale animations
and i could charge different amounts for different levels of animation. Like a minimal animation thing where it's just an icon with blinking eyes would be cheaper than something with full body motion and stuff. i can do both of them, and its something i'm already comfortable with and do with in my spare time!
yeah! and it would be great practice!
please do share some pics of your hair! i'm excite
it's a shitty situation, but you will bounce back! just hang in there!

What does Pedro say to do with the bodies then?>>1013751
I am excited to see what kind of stuff you are able to put together! If I find myself employed any time soon, I already know a short animation or two I might like to commission out of you ^_^

Tried to throw together this squirtle real quick before bed. It actually took a lot longer than I thought even though I was trying to be quick about it. Who knew, drawing something takes time! All the Pokémon have anime eyes, but squirtle's are done a little differently than the others and I do not understand the mechanics of these eyes. Maybe I'll look up an eye tutorial to get a better feel for them. Also, squirtle's limbs seem so stubby as to make him practically useless. Just sayin!
I should budget more time for doing this, I mean even this took 35 minutes or so for me, but I think I should try to get at least an hour in a day. I'll try to work on it earlier in the day instead of in the 25th hour of the day :p>>1013829
I already commented in the other thread, but this is super excellent and I'm impressed you already got something put together so fast! How much time did you have to put into that? I guess I'm starting to be curious how much time is taking peeps to make their arts.

You know, wartortle is just squirtle with ears and a more serious expression! It's pretty much the exact same. I tried to play with the shapes that make up his face to see how I felt about slight deviations, see what I like and didn't. I think I got a little inspiration from some of the stuff I was doing here. I want to try something new tomorrow and see if I can pull off something different and interesting.

Alright, this is what I've been working on the past couple days. I'm really fucking happy with it, it reeks of my aesthetic taste. >>1014246
I was actually thinking about the wartortle I drew that didn't have the outline of the head on it. That was the inspiration for this piece. I just thought, fuck this would make a great wallpaper if I threw things together right. I think this is what I was hoping for, to find something that really got me excited. It's my own thing, my own style, my own art. I had a lot of fun working on it ^_^>>1014429
Thanks, I think it's functioning for me! Like, I'm such a finicky person that I need some kind of system to get myself going. But, I'm finally chugging along now, which is what I wanted.
I like it.
Perfect for a smartphone wallpaper.
