So is that a no on the flags then?

I'd hate to see Starshine's work go to waste.

 No.1434

It isn't really a waste when it originally wasn't made for this site and it is already being used somewhere else. While it isn't like we technically need permission to take and implement them, I don't really consider that 'right'. I think Mikie has the final say and if he wants it to be pchan exclusive, then that is how it should be. I think we should respect his wishes on this.

Well, Ponychan took the idea from 4chan.

It's not really a ponychan exclusive invention.

 No.1441

>>1440
I just checked and it looks like you are incorrect. 4chan did not implement custom mlp based flags for their pony board.

If you are asking to turn on the basic geoflag thing, sure that is built into the board I guess. Repurposing it as pchan did is a different story. And while it is not like pchan has a patent on pony flags, at least I am of the opinion we should respect that they wanted a thing for themselves to give them some uniqueness and we shouldn't just copy their idea without permission.

Maybe a Moony can respond here and weigh in?

No, Ponychan took the idea of flags from 4chan. It doesn't matter that Ponychan's are MLP related, it is still using the idea of flags.

I think the flags is a stupid idea, though, so I'm glad we don't have it.

Look you are free to assign no value to the repurposing and customizing of a system, but I do. Why are you even here? I don't really care to argue for arguments sake in this thread.

I'm here to tell you that you are incorrect, and that your arguments are incorrect because there is very little that is actually unique to the flag system that Ponychan uses except that they allow unique flags made by users.

That much they have the right to keep for themselves, at least in so far as the artists who made the unique flags want to keep their flags on Ponychan.

Which means that Ponyville could have flags without "copying" Ponychan anymore than Ponychan "copied" 4chan, as long as the users here made their own or if the artists of the unique flags on Ponychan allowed their flags to be used on Ponyville, much like Starshine making some for us here and posting a thread about them.

I don't have to like or want an idea or feature to argue for it's fair use and to argue against people like you from saying it's wrong to "copy" something that someone else "copied" themselves.

 No.1450

>>1449
and, honestly, it's not like the idea of using the geoflag system to have unique, non-geographical related flags is all that special or unique an idea.

Nothing against Mikie or anything, but trying to claim something like that is his sole idea would be like someone trying to claim the idea of writing a crossover story between Batman and Star Trek. Sure, it's possible nobody ever considered it before, but the idea of making a crossover between two fictional things isn't exactly unique in itself.

A bit of a weird analogy, though.

Ok, so you got a fair amount of opinions and you really want them heard on this topic for some reason. You can keep having the opinion that you are right and I am wrong all you like I guess. Enjoy.

Wow, what an original and well thought out response to my points of discussion. You really are so great at discussing things on the internet, you should totally do it more often.

 No.1453

>>1452
Oh, you wanted to have a discussion? That's a little surprising to me considering you jumped into this thread by saying I'm wrong and just dismissing me and my argument.

Let's review:
>No, Ponychan took the idea of flags from 4chan. It doesn't matter that Ponychan's are MLP related, it is still using the idea of flags.

If you are going to start a 'discussion' with "the argument you made doesn't matter, therefore you are wrong" then (at least to me) it doesn't look like you want to have an intellectual back and forth.

I think I am pretty polite in my follow up, all things considered with the way you open your 'discussion'. I do question why you are even here, with the subtext "if all you want to do is dismiss me".

Let us review how you start your reply:
>I'm here to tell you that you are incorrect, and that your arguments are incorrect
Yeah, maybe from where you are from that is civil debate, but I consider that to be worthy of nothing but scorn and contempt. And so, that is what I gave you back.

Maybe you didn't intent the outright hostility that I perceive in every word you wrote in this thread. If that is the case, you need to work on your communication skills. And even if you didn't intend any hostility, you still aren't really countering my argument, just dismissing or ignoring it. The crux of my argument is actually here >>1441 "at least I am of the opinion we should respect that they wanted a thing for themselves to give them some uniqueness and we shouldn't just copy their idea without permission". I'm not claiming that flags are such a unique and original concept that anybody taking them is stealing something. I am saying pchan made a thing because they wanted something to differentiate them from the competition (which we are). And even if flags aren't a unique idea, there is currently only one place on the internet that you can find a chan with custom mlp flags. That is what is unique. And if we copy that, we are taking that away from them.

You are allowed to say that it doesn't matter to you. That's fine. But it matters to me. I don't believe you will change your mind and I have no interest in arguing my point further if my words aren't likely to sway. Feel free to try to convince me otherwise if you want.

>it's not like the idea of using the geoflag system to have unique, non-geographical related flags is all that special or unique an idea.
And in fact, 4chan /pol/ has already allowed users to pick non-GeoIP flag for a while now.  E.g., confederate flag, Nazi flag, Antifa flag.

You'd have my blessing as the creator of those flags, although I wouldn't want it to create or exacerbate any resentment. I'd hoped this wouldn't be such a big deal, especially considering it'd be only the cutie mark flags here, and Ponychan has other "meme" flags (and in fact hasn't even added the pony flags yet), so the way they're used on Ponychan is still "unique" in that capacity.

To me, treating something like this to be exclusive rather than shared seems contrary to the interest of reducing animosity between communities. But that's just my idealistic take. If it's super important to Mikie, I'll respect that.

One of these days I'd also like to get back to extending Flutter's functionality to support Ponyville.

Sooo, still no actual response, just more complaining and talking to hear yourself talk. Gotcha.

tl;dr and learn to have discussions on the internet without getting whiny and offended over nothing

Edit: Or, alternatively, learn to just accept when you've been proven wrong.

Hey!
Can we implement the flags as Ponymotes?

It is a bit of a consolation prize, but that will both honour Starshine's contribution and let us apply it without breaking Pchan's rights.

The idea is to have them on /oat/. I had the idea for Ponyflags for literal years. Remember when I asked macil for the pony emoji flags on MLPchan? Anyway thank you for respecting my wishes. It's all the ask since the idea of us reuniting is sadly off the table.

Sides they always have these :glim1::pinkie1::dash6::aj6::shy1::trixie6:

And that's unique to Ponyville.

i think the flags are cute... and i hadn't thought of it as being something contentious. But it is clear, Ponychan feels some possession of these flags, and we should respect their feelings.

unique in so far as on an imageboard, maybe, but not unique to the site itself, other sites have ponymotes too.

so it's basically the same thing.
